Two coupled qubits interacting with a thermal bath: A comparative study of different models

We investigate a system of two interacting qubits having one of them isolated and the other coupled to a thermal reservoir. We consider two different models of system-reservoir interaction: i) a "microscopic" model, in which the master equation is derived taking into account the interaction between the two subsystems (qubits), ii) a naive "phenomenological" model, in which the master equation consists of a dissipative term added to the unitary evolution term. We study the dynamics of quantities such as bipartite entanglement, quantum discord and the linear entropy of the isolated qubit for both strong and weak coupling regimes (qubit-qubit interaction) as well as for different temperatures of the reservoir. We find significant disagreements between the results obtained from the two models even in the weak coupling regime. For instance, we show that according to the phenomenological model, the isolated qubit would approach a maximally mixed state more slowly for higher temperatures (unphysical result), while the microscopic model predicts the opposite behaviour (correct result).

Evolution of a quantum harmonic oscillator coupled to a minimal thermal environment

In this paper it is studied the influence of a minimal thermal environment on the dynamics of a quantum harmonic oscillator (labelled A), prepared in a coherent state. The environment itself consists of a second oscillator (labelled B), initially in a thermal state. Two types of interaction Hamiltonians are considered, and the time-evolution of the reduced density operator of oscillator A is compared to the one obtained from the usual master equation approach, i.e., assuming that oscillator A is coupled to a large reservoir. An analysis of the linear entropy evolution of oscillator A shows that simplified models may be able to describe important features related to the phenomenon of decoherence.

Quantum Key Distribution using Continuous-variable non-Gaussian States

In this work we present a quantum key distribution protocol using continuous-variable non-Gaussian states, homodyne detection and post-selection. The employed signal states are the Photon Added then Subtracted Coherent States (PASCS) in which one photon is added and subsequently one photon is subtracted. We analyze the performance of our protocol, compared to a coherent state based protocol, for two different attacks that could be carried out by the eavesdropper (Eve). We calculate the secret key rate transmission in a lossy line for a superior channel (beam-splitter) attack, and we show that we may increase the secret key generation rate by using the non-Gaussian PASCS rather than coherent states. We also consider the simultaneous quadrature measurement (intercept-resend) attack and we show that the efficiency of Eve's attack is substantially reduced if PASCS are used as signal states.

Dissipation-driven squeezed and sub-Poissonian mechanical states in quadratic optomechanical systems

In this work we study an optomechanical system in which there is a purely quadratic optomechanical coupling between the optical and mechanical modes. The optical mode is pumped by three coherent fields and the mechanical mode is parametrically driven. We show that if the frequencies and amplitudes of both optical and mechanical drivings are properly chosen, the optomechanical interaction gives rise to an effective interaction, which, in the presence of optical damping and in the absence of mechanical damping, has the squeezed vacuum state and the squeezed one phonon state as dark states of the dynamics. These states are well known for presenting quadrature squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics. However, even in the presence of mechanical damping it is possible to find steady states with large degrees of quadrature squeezing or strong sub-Poissonian statistics. Furthermore, we find a counter-intuitive behavior in which a nonzero temperature of the mechanical environment allows the observation of mechanical states with more pronounced sub-Poissonian statistics.

Coherence properties of coupled optomechanical cavities

In this work we investigate an optomechanical system consisting of two cavities coupled to the same mechanical resonator. We consider each cavity being weakly pumped as well as a small tunneling rate between the cavities. In such conditions, the system can be studied via quantum Langevin equations and the steady state solution can be found perturbatively. In order to ensure that the approximations and methods used to study the system are suitable, the analytical results were compared to numerical simulations. We study the statistical properties of the cavity radiation fields and we show that depending on the values of the parameters of the system, it is possible to modify the spectrum of the cavities and even enhance the sub-Poissonian character of the cavity field.

Dynamics of a superconducting qubit coupled to the quantized cavity field: a unitary transformation approach

We present a novel approach for studying the dynamics of a superconducting qubit in a cavity. We succeed in linearizing the Hamiltonian through the application of an appropriate unitary transformation followed by a rotating wave approximation (RWA). For certain values of the parameters involved, we show that it is possible to obtain a a Jaynes-Cummings type Hamiltonian. As an example, we show the existence of super-revivals for the qubit inversion.

Dynamics of atom-field entanglement in a bimodal cavity

We investigate some aspects of the dynamics and entanglement of bipartite quantum system (atom-quantized field), coupled to a third ``external" subsystem (quantized field). We make use of the Raman coupled model; a three-level atom in a lambda configuration interacting with two modes of the quantized cavity field. We consider the far off resonance limit, which allows the derivation of an effective Hamiltonian of a two-level atom coupled to the fields. We also make a comparison with the situation in which one of the modes is treated classically rather than prepared in a quantum field (coherent state).

Atom-field transfer of coherence in a two-photon micromaser assisted by a classical field

We investigate the transfer of coherence from atoms to a cavity field initially in a statistical mixture in a two-photon micromaser arrangement. The field is progressively modified from a maximum entropy state (thermal state) towards an almost pure state (entropy close to zero) due to its interaction with atoms sent across the cavity. We trace over the atomic variables, i.e., the atomic states are not collapsed by a detector after they leave the cavity. We find that by applying an external classical driving field it is possible to substantially increase the field purity without the need of previously preparing the atoms in a superposition of their energy eigenstates. We also discuss some of the nonclassical features of the resulting field.

Bipartite quantum channels using multipartite cluster-type entangled coherent states

We propose a particular encoding for bipartite entangled states derived from multipartite cluster-type entangled coherent states (CTECSs). We investigate the effects of amplitude damping on the entanglement content of this bipartite state, as well as its usefulness as a quantum channel for teleportation. We find interesting relationships among the amplitude of the coherent states constituting the CTECSs, the number of subsystems forming the logical qubits (redundancy), and the extent to which amplitude damping affects the entanglement of the channel. For instance, in the sense of sudden death of entanglement, given a fixed value of the initial coherent state amplitude, the entanglement life span is shortened if redundancy is increased.

Cluster-type entangled coherent states

We present the cluster-type entangled coherent states (CTECS) and discuss their properties. A cavity QED generation scheme using suitable choices of atom-cavity interactions, obtained via detunings adjustments and the application of classical external fields, is also presented. After the realization of simple atomic measurements, CTECS representing nonlocal electromagnetic fields in separate cavities can be generated.

Entanglement reciprocation using three level atoms in a lambda configuration

We propose a scheme in which entanglement can be transferred from atoms (discrete variables) to entangled states of cavity fields (continuous variables). The cavities play the role of a kind of quantum memory for entanglement, in such a way that it is possible to retrieve it back to the atoms. In our method, two three level atoms in a lambda configuration, previously entangled, are set to interact with single mode cavity fields prepared in coherent states. During the process, one e-bit of entanglement may be deposited in the cavities in an efficient way. We also show that the stored entanglement may be transferred back to flying atoms.

Two-photon interaction between trapped ions and cavity fields

In this paper, we generalize the ordinary two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model (TPJCM) by considering the atom (or ion) to be trapped in a simple harmonic well. A typical setup would be an optical cavity containing a single ion in a Paul trap. Due to the inclusion of atomic vibrational motion, the atom-field coupling becomes highly nonlinear what brings out quite different behaviors for the system dynamics when compared to the ordinary TPJCM. In particular, we derive an effective two-photon Hamiltonian with dependence on the number operator of the ion's center-of-mass motion. This dependence occurs both in the cavity induced Stark-shifs and in the ion-field coupling, and its role in the dynamics is illustrated by showing the time evolution of the probability of occupation of the electronic levels for simple initial preparations of the state of the system.

Quantum key distribution using polarized coherent states

We discuss a continuous variables method of quantum key distribution employing strongly polarized coherent states of light. The key encoding is performed using the variables known as Stokes parameters, rather than the field quadratures. Their quantum counterpart, the Stokes operators $\hat{S}_i$ (i=1,2,3), constitute a set of non-commuting operators, being the precision of simultaneous measurements of a pair of them limited by an uncertainty-like relation. Alice transmits a conveniently modulated two-mode coherent state, and Bob randomly measures one of the Stokes parameters of the incoming beam. After performing reconciliation and privacy amplification procedures, it is possible to distill a secret common key. We also consider a non-ideal situation, in which coherent states with thermal noise, instead of pure coherent states, are used for encoding.

Effective cross-Kerr nonlinearity and robust phase gates with trapped ions

We derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes a cross-Kerr type interaction in a system involving a two-level trapped ion coupled to the quantized field inside a cavity. We assume a large detuning between the ion and field (dispersive limit) and this results in an interaction Hamiltonian involving the product of the (bosonic) ionic vibrational motion and field number operators. We also demonstrate the feasibility of operation of a phase gate based on our hamiltonian. The gate is insensitive to spontaneous emission, an important feature for the practical implementation of quantum computing.

Spontaneous emission and teleportation in cavity QED

In this work, we consider atomic spontaneous emission in a system consisting of two identical two-level atoms interacting dispersively with the quantized electromagnetic field in a high-Q cavity. We investigate the destructive effect of the atomic decay on the generation of maximally entangled states, following the proposal by Zheng S B and Guo G C (2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 2392). In particular, we analyze the fidelity of teleportation performed using such a noisy channel and calculatethe maximum spontaneous decay rate we may have in order to realize teleportation.

Non-conditioned generation of Schroedinger cat states in a cavity

We investigate the dynamics of a two-level atom in a cavity filled with a nonlinear medium. We show that the atom-field detuning $δ$ and the nonlinear parameter $χ^{(3)}$ may be combined to yield a periodic dynamics and allowing the generation of almost exact superpositions of coherent states ({\sl Schrödinger} cats). By analysing the atomic inversion and the field purity, we verify that any initial atom-field state is recovered at each revival time, and that a coherent field interacting with an excited atom evolves to a superposition of coherent states at each collapse time. We show that a mixed field state (statistical mixture of two coherent states) evolves towards a pure field state ({\sl Schrödinger} cat) as well. We discuss the validity of those results by using the field fidelity and the {\sl Wigner} function.

Coherent states superpositions in cavity quantum electrodynamics with trapped ions

We investigate how superpositions of motional coherent states naturally arise in the dynamics of a two-level trapped ion coupled to the quantized field inside a cavity. We extend our considerations including a more realistic set up where the cavity is not ideal and photons may leak through its mirrors. We found that a detection of a photon outside the cavity would leave the ion in a pure state. The statistics of the ionic state still keeps some interference effects that might be observed in the weak coupling regime.

Fast quantum logic gates with trapped ions interacting with external laser and quantized cavity field beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime

A scheme to implement quantum logic gates by manipulating trapped ions through interaction with monochromatic external laser field and quantized cavity field, beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime, is presented. Characteristic times, for implementing ionic state transitions using non-resont laser pulse or quantized cavity field, shows a sharp decline for large Lamb-Dicke parameter value of $η_{L}=η_{c}=0.2$, and is seen to decrease further with increase in number of initial state vibrational quanta $m$.
