Wannier center spectroscopy to identify boundary-obstructed topological insulators

The hallmark of topological crystalline insulators is the emergence of a robust electronic state in a bandgap localized at the boundary of the material. However, end, edge, and surface states can also have a nontopological origin. Unfortunately, topological invariants such as the winding number and Zak phase are often not directly experimentally accessible for solids. In addition to topological invariants, the position of the Wannier centers provides a fingerprint for the topological character of a material. Here, we demonstrate a method to experimentally determine the location of Wannier centers in artificial lattices made of Cs/InAs(111)A by integrating the density of states. We determine the locations of the Wannier centers for various 1D chains, topological and trivial, and corroborate our findings with tight-binding simulations.

Kiloton-scale xenon detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay and other new physics searches

Large detectors employing xenon are a leading technology in existing and planned searches for new physics, including searches for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0νββ$) and dark matter. While upcoming detectors will employ target masses of a ton or more, further extending gas or liquid phase Xe detectors to the kton scale would enable extremely sensitive next-generation searches for rare phenomena. The key challenge to extending this technology to detectors well beyond the ton scale is the acquisition of the Xe itself. We describe the motivation for extending Xe time projection chambers (TPCs) to the kton scale and possible avenues for Xe acquisition that avoid existing supply chains. If acquisition of Xe in the required quantities is successful, kton-scale detectors of this type could enable a new generation of experiments, including searches for $0νββ$ at half-life sensitivities as long as $10^{30}$ yr.

A search for molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

We present results of an extensive search for molecular gas in 14 high redshift ($z>2$) radio galaxies. Radio galaxies with redshifts between 2.0 and 4.3 were observed during several sessions on two different single-dish telescopes (IRAM and JCMT) and two interferometric arrays (VLA and OVRO). No significant CO emission to a 2$σ$ limit of a few times 10^{10} K km s^{-1} pc^2 was detected in any of these objects. The limits on the CO emission achieved indicate that, assuming a CO-H$_2$ conversion factor similar to the Galactic value, the mass of enriched molecular gas in these galaxies is less than $10^{11} $M$_{\odot}$. This suggests that distant radio galaxies may not be forming stars at the extremely high rates that have earlier been proposed, although they may still be forming stars at rates comparable to those of local starburst galaxies.
