Electromagnetic selection rules in the triangular alpha-cluster model of 12C

After recapitulating the procedure to find the bands and the states occurring in the $\mathcal{D}_{3h}$ alpha-cluster model of $^{12}$C in which the clusters are placed at the vertexes of an equilateral triangle, we obtain the selection rules for electromagnetic transitions. While the alpha cluster structure leads to the cancellation of E1 transitions, the approximations carried out in deriving the roto-vibrational hamiltonian lead to the disappearance of M1 transitions. Furthermore, although in general the lowest active modes are E2, E3, $\cdots$ and M2, M3, $\cdots$, the cancellation of M2, M3 and M5 transitions between certain bands also occurs, as a result of the application of group theoretical techniques drawn from molecular physics. These implications can be very relevant for the spectroscopic analysis of $γ$-ray spectra of $^{12}$C.

Nuclear fusion as a probe for octupole deformation in $^{224}$Ra

$\textit{Background}$: Nuclear fusion has been shown to be a perfect probe to study the different nuclear shapes. However, the possibility of testing octupole deformation of a nucleus with this tool has not been fully explored yet. The presence of a stactic octupole deformation in nuclei will enhanced a possible permanent electric dipole moment, leading to a possible demonstration of parity violation. $\textit{Purpose}$: To check whether static octupole deformation or octupole vibration in fusion give qualitatively different results so that both situations can be experimentally disentangled. $\textit{Method}$: Fusion cross sections are computed in the Coupled-Channels formalism making use of the Ingoing-Wave Boundary Conditions (IWBC) for the systems $^{16}$O+$^{144}$Ba and $^{16}$O+$^{224}$Ra. $\textit{Results}$: Barrier distributions of the two considered schemes show different patterns. For the $^{224}$Ra case, the octupole deformation parameter is large enough to create a sizeable difference. $\textit{Conclusions}$: The measurement of barrier distributions can be an excellent probe to clarify the presence of octupole deformation.

Pairing in the continuum: the quadrupole response of the Borromean nucleus 6He

The ground state and low-lying continuum states of 6He are found within a shell model scheme, in a basis of two-particle states built out of continuum p-states of the unbound 5He nucleus, using a simple pairing contact-delta interaction. This accounts for the Borromean character of the bound ground state, revealing its composition. We investigate the quadrupole response of the system and we put our calculations into perspective with the latest experimental results. The calculated quadrupole strength distribution reproduces the narrow 2+ resonance, while a second wider peak is found at about 3.9 MeV above the g.s. energy.

Enhanced subbarrier fusion for proton halo nuclei

In this short note we use a simple model to describe the dynamical effects of break-up processes in the subbarrier fusion involving weakly bound nuclei. We model two similar cases involving either a neutron or a proton halo nucleus, both schematically coupled to the break-up channels. We find that the decrease of the coulomb barrier in the proton break-up channel leads, ceteris paribus, to a larger enhancement of the subbarier fusion probabilities with respect to the neutron-halo case.

Pair-transfer probability in open- and closed-shell Sn isotopes

Approximations made to estimate two-nucleon transfer probabilities in ground-state to ground-state transitions and physical interpretation of these probabilities are discussed. Probabilities are often calculated by approximating both ground states, of the initial nucleus A and of the final nucleus A\pm 2 by the same quasiparticle vacuum. We analyze two improvements of this approach. First, the effect of using two different ground states with average numbers of particles A and A\pm2 is quantified. Second, by using projection techniques, the role of particle number restoration is analyzed. Our analysis shows that the improved treatment plays a role close to magicity, leading to an enhancement of the pair-transfer probability. In mid-shell regions, part of the error made by approximating the initial and final ground states by a single vacuum is compensated by projecting onto good particle number. Surface effects are analyzed by using pairing interactions with a different volume-to-surface mixing. Finally, a simple expression of the pair-transfer probability is given in terms of occupation probabilities in the canonical basis. We show that, in the canonical basis formulation, surface effects which are visible in the transfer probability are related to the fragmentation of single-particle occupancies close to the Fermi energy. This provides a complementary interpretation with respect to the standard quasiparticle representation where surface effects are generated by the integrated radial profiles of the contributing wave functions.

Two-neutron halo nuclei in one dimension: dineutron correlation and breakup reaction

We propose a simple schematic model for two-neutron halo nuclei. In this model, the two valence neutrons move in a one-dimensional mean field, interacting with each other via a density-dependent contact interaction. We first investigate the ground state properties, and demonstrate that the dineutron correlation can be realized with this simple model due to the admixture of even- and odd-parity single-particle states. We then solve the time-dependent two-particle Schrödinger equation under the influence of a time-dependent one-body external field, in order to discuss the effect of dineutron correlation on nuclear breakup processes. The time evolution of two-particle density shows that the dineutron correlation enhances the total breakup probability, especially for the two-neutron breakup process, in which both the valence neutrons are promoted to continuum scattering states. We find that the interaction between the two particles definitely favours a spatial correlation of the two outgoing particles, which are mainly emitted in the same direction.

Excitation of Pygmy Dipole Resonance in neutron-rich nuclei via Coulomb and nuclear fields

We study the nature of the low-lying dipole strength in neutron-rich nuclei, often associated to the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. The states are described within the Hartree-Fock plus RPA formalism, using different parametrizations of the Skyrme interaction. We show how the information from combined reactions processes involving the Coulomb and different mixtures of isoscalar and isovector nuclear interactions can provide a clue to reveal the characteristic features of these states.

Electric and magnetic response to the continuum for A=7 isobars in a dicluster model

Mirror isobars $^7$Li and $^7$Be are investigated in a dicluster model. The magnetic dipole moments and the magnetic dipole response to the continuum are calculated in this framework. The magnetic contribution is found to be small with respect to electric dipole and quadrupole excitations even at astrophysical energies, at a variance with the case of deuteron. Energy weighted molecular sum rules are evaluated and a formula for the molecular magnetic dipole sum rule is found which matches the numerical calculations. Cross-sections for photo-dissociation and radiative capture as well as the S-factor for reactions of astrophysical significance are calculated with good agreement with known experimental data.

Role of Higher Multipole Excitations in the Electromagnetic Dissociation of One Neutron Halo Nuclei

We investigate the role of higher multipole excitations in the electromagnetic dissociation of one-neutron halo nuclei within two different theoretical models -- a finite range distorted wave Born approximation and another in a more analytical method with a finite range potential. We also show, within a simple picture, how the presence of a weakly bound state affects the breakup cross section.

Critical point symmetries in boson-fermion systems. The case of shape transition in odd nuclei in a multi-orbit model

We investigate phase transitions in boson-fermion systems. We propose an analytically solvable model (E(5/12)) to describe odd nuclei at the critical point in the transition from the spherical to $γ$-unstable behaviour. In the model, a boson core described within the Bohr Hamiltonian interacts with an unpaired particle assumed to be moving in the three single particle orbitals j=1/2,3/2,5/2. Energy spectra and electromagnetic transitions at the critical point compare well with the results obtained within the Interacting Boson Fermion Model, with a boson-fermion Hamiltonian that describes the same physical situation.

Phase transitions in the Interacting Boson Fermion Model: the gamma-unstable case

The phase transition around the critical point in the evolution from spherical to deformed gamma-unstable shapes is investigated in odd nuclei within the Interacting Boson Fermion Model. We consider the particular case of an odd j=3/2 particle coupled to an even-even boson core that undergoes a transition from spherical U(5) to gamma-unstable O(6) situation. The particular choice of the j=3/2 orbital preserves in the odd case the condition of gamma-instability of the system. As a consequence, energy spectrum and electromagnetic transitions, in correspondence of the critical point, display behaviours qualitatively similar to those of the even core. The results are also in qualitative agreement with the recently proposed E(5/4) model, although few differences are present, due to the different nature of the two schemes.

Reaction dynamics for fusion of weakly-bound nuclei

We discuss several open problems of fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we solve a one dimensional three-body Hamiltonian with the coupled-channels formalism. We show that the continuum-continuum couplings substantially reduce the total fusion probability at energies above the barrier compared with the no-breakup case, although the fusion probability remains enhanced at subbarrier energies. We then discuss a role of transfer process in fusion of weakly bound nuclei, and point out that removing spurious Pauli forbidden transfer components from the calculation may be crucial at energies below the barrier. Calculations based on the three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method are also presented in order to discuss how to model complete fusion process.

The U(5)-O(6) transition in the Interacting Boson Model and the E(5) critical point symmetry

The relation of the recently proposed E(5) critical point symmetry with the interacting boson model is investigated. The large-N limit of the interacting boson model at the critical point in the transition from U(5) to O(6) is obtained by solving the Richardson equations. It is shown explicitly that this algebraic calculation leads to the same results as the solution of the Bohr differential equation with a $β^4$ potential.

On the Excitation of Double Giant Resonances in Heavy Ion Reactions

The interplay of nuclear and Coulomb processes in the inelastic excitation of single- and double-phonon giant resonances in heavy ion collisions is studied within a simple reaction model. Predominance of the Coulomb excitation mechanism on the population of the single-phonon and, on the contrary, predominance of the nuclear excitation for the double-phonon is evidenced. The effect of the spreading of the strength distribution of the giant resonances on the excitation process is analyzed, showing sizeable modifications in the case of Coulomb dominated processes.

Cross sections for the excitation of isovector charge-exchange resonances in 208Tl

The Glauber approximation for the treatment of heavy-ion scattering, has already been shown to give reliable predictions for the reaction cross section in the particular case of intermediate energy charge-exchange processes. In the present work, we couple a Glauber-type model to microscopic Random Phase Approximation calculations of the charge-exchange excitations of $^{208}$Pb. The aim is to solve the longstanding question whether the very elusive charge-exchange isovector monopole has been really identified in the past experiments, or other multipoles were prevalent in the observed spectra.

Enhanced excitation of Giant Pairing Vibrations in heavy-ion reactions induced by weakly-bound projectiles

The use of radioactive ion beams is shown to offer the possibility to study collective pairing states at high excitation energy, which are not usually accessible with stable projectiles because of large energy mismatch. In the case of two-neutron stripping reactions induced by 6He, we predict a population of the Giant Pairing Vibration in 208Pb or 116Sn with cross sections of the order of a millibarn, dominating over the mismatched transition to the ground state.

Sub-barrier fusion of drip-line nuclei

We discuss the role of break-up process of a loosely-bound projectile in subbarrier fusion reactions. Coupled-channels calculations are carried out for $^{11}$Be + $^{208}$Pb and $^{4,6}$He + $^{238}$U reactions by discretizing in energy the particle continuum states. Our calculations show that the coupling to the break-up channel has two effects, namely the loss of flux and the dynamical modulation of fusion potential. Their net effects differ depending on the energy region. At energies above the Coulomb barrier, the former effect dominates over the latter and cross sections for complete fusion are hindered compared with the no coupling case. On the other hand, at below the barrier, the latter effect is much larger than the former and complete fusion cross sections are enhanced consequently.

Coupling of Dipole Mode to gamma-unstable Quadrupole Oscillations

The coupling of the high-lying dipole mode to the low-lying quadrupole modes for the case of deformed gamma-unstable nuclei is studied. Results from the geometrical model are compared to those obtained within the dipole boson model. Consistent results are obtained in both models. The dipole boson model is treated within the intrinsic frame, with subsequent projection onto the laboratory frame. As an application, calculations of photonuclear cross-sections in gamma-unstable nuclei are presented.
