First simultaneous analysis of transverse momentum dependent and collinear parton distributions in the proton

We present the first simultaneous global QCD analysis of unpolarized transverse momentum dependent (TMD) and collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Our study incorporates data from deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, inclusive weak boson, $W$+\,charm, and jet production involving PDFs, as well as TMD Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production data from fixed target and collider experiments sensitive to both TMD and collinear distributions. The analysis is performed at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for QCD resummation in TMD observables and next-to-leading order for observables described in collinear factorization. The combined analysis improves knowledge of both TMD and collinear PDFs, particularly in the sea-quark sector, providing a consistent simultaneous description of the aforementioned observables.

Flavor-dependent b-profiles from Drell-Yan spectra at low transverse momenta

We discuss our recent study of the impact of collinear PDFs and their uncertainties on the determination of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) production measurements at low transverse momenta. Using QCD factorization and evolution in transverse coordinate b space, this study takes into account for the first time flavor-dependent non-perturbative b-profiles. It illustrates that collinear PDF uncertainties and non-perturbative TMD flavor dependence are both essential to obtain reliable TMD determinations.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Electron Ion Collider for High Energy Physics

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a particle accelerator facility planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York by the United States Department of Energy. EIC will provide capabilities of colliding beams of polarized electrons with polarized beams of proton and light ions. EIC will be one of the largest and most sophisticated new accelerator facilities worldwide, and the only new large-scale accelerator facility planned for construction in the United States in the next few decades. The versatility, resolving power and intensity of EIC will present many new opportunities to address some of the crucial and fundamental open scientific questions in particle physics. This document provides an overview of the science case of EIC from the perspective of the high energy physics community.

ECCE Sensitivity Studies for Single Hadron Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry Measurements

We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities.

ECCE unpolarized TMD measurements

We performed feasibility studies for various measurements that are related to unpolarized TMD distribution and fragmentation functions. The processes studied include semi-inclusive Deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The single hadron cross sections and multiplicities were extracted as a function of the DIS variables $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, which corresponds to the momentum fraction the detected hadron carries relative to the struck parton and $P_T$, which corresponds to the transverse momentum of the detected hadron relative to the virtual photon. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to accumulated luminosities of 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields.

Determination of the rapidity evolution kernel from Drell-Yan data at low transverse momenta

We report recent results on the extraction of the rapidity evolution kernel for Sudakov processes from experimental measurements of Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum distributions. We discuss the role of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, and illustrate the interplay of this analysis with transverse momentum dependent and collinear parton density functions.

TMDlib2 and TMDplotter: a platform for 3D hadron structure studies

A common library, TMDlib2, for Transverse-Momentum-Dependent distributions (TMDs) and unintegrated parton distributions (uPDFs) is described, which allows for easy access of commonly used TMDs and uPDFs, providing a three-dimensional (3D) picture of the partonic structure of hadrons. The tool TMDplotter allows for web-based plotting of distributions implemented in TMDlib2, together with collinear pdfs as available in LHAPDF.

Power corrections and renormalons in parton quasi-distributions

Perturbative expansions for short-distance quantities in QCD are factorially divergent and this deficiency can be turned into a useful tool to investigate nonperturbative corrections. In this work, we use this approach to study the structure of power corrections to parton quasi-distributions and pseudo-distributions which appear in lattice calculations of parton distribution functions. As the main result, we predict the functional dependence of the leading power corrections to quasi(pseudo)-distributions on the Bjorken $x$ variable. We also show that these corrections can be strongly affected by the normalization procedure.

Large Emission Regime in Mean Field Luminescence

We study a class of random processes on $N$ particles which can be interpreted as stochastic model of luminescence. Each particle can stay in one of two states: Excited state or ground state. Any particle at ground state is excited with a constant rate (pumping). The number of excited particles decreases by means of photon emission through interactions of the particles. We analyse the rare event of flashes, i.e., the emission of a very large number of photons $B$ during a fixed time interval $T$. We employ the theory of large deviations to provide the asymptotics of the probability of such event when the total number of particles $N$ tends to infinity. This theory gives us also the optimal trajectory of scaled process corresponding to this event. The stationary regime of this process we call the large emission regime. In several cases we prove that in the large emission regime a share of excited particles in a system is stable under the changes of the pumping and emission rates.

Large Fluctuations in two-level systems with stimulated emission

We consider a system of $N$ identical independent Markov processes, each taking values 0 or 1. The system describes a stochastic dynamics of an ensemble of two-level atoms. The atoms are exposed to a photon flux. Under the photon flux action, every atom changes its state with some intensities either from its ground state (state 0) to the excited state (state 1) or from the excited state to the ground state (the stimulated emission). The atom can also change the state from the excited to the ground one spontaneously. We study rare events when the big cumulative emission occurs on the fixed time interval $[0,T]$. To this end we apply the large deviation theory which allows one to make asymptotic analysis as $N\to\infty$.

Large Fluctuations of Radiation in Stochastically Activated Two-Level Systems

We study the large fluctuations of emitted radiations in the system of $N$ non-interacting two-level atoms. Two methods are used to calculate the probability of the large fluctuations and the time dependence of the excitation and emission. The first method is based on the large deviation principle for Markov processes. The second one uses an analogue of the quantum formalism for classical probability problems. Particularly we prove that in a large fluctuation limit approximately a half of the atoms are excited. This fact is independent on the fraction of the excited atoms in the stationary state.

Metastability of Queuing Networks with Mobile Servers

We study symmetric queuing networks with moving servers and FIFO service discipline. The mean-field limit dynamics demonstrates unexpected behavior which we attribute to the meta-stability phenomenon. Large enough finite symmetric networks on regular graphs are proved to be transient for arbitrarily small inflow rates. However, the limiting non-linear Markov process possesses at least two stationary solutions. The proof of transience is based on martingale techniques.

Continuous products of matrices

We answer the question if the continuous product of square matrices $M(t)$ over $t\in [0,1]$ can be correctly defined. The case where all $M(t)$ are taken from a finite set $Σ$ is studied. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on $Σ$ that ensure the convergence of products $M(t_{0}=0)M(t_{1})\dots M(t_{N}=1)$ as the partition $0<t_{1}<\dots<1$ refines. These conditions are properties LCP (left convergent product) and RCP (right convergent product) of the set $Σ$. That is, it suffices to require the convergence of all finite products $M_{1}M_{2}\dots M_{K}$ and $M_{K}\dots M_{2}M_{1}$ as $K\to\infty$, where $M_{i}\inΣ$. The theory of joint spectral radius is heavily used.

First Evaluation of the CPU, GPGPU and MIC Architectures for Real Time Particle Tracking based on Hough Transform at the LHC

Recent innovations focused around {\em parallel} processing, either through systems containing multiple processors or processors containing multiple cores, hold great promise for enhancing the performance of the trigger at the LHC and extending its physics program. The flexibility of the CMS/ATLAS trigger system allows for easy integration of computational accelerators, such as NVIDIA's Tesla Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or Intel's \xphi, in the High Level Trigger. These accelerators have the potential to provide faster or more energy efficient event selection, thus opening up possibilities for new complex triggers that were not previously feasible. At the same time, it is crucial to explore the performance limits achievable on the latest generation multicore CPUs with the use of the best software optimization methods. In this article, a new tracking algorithm based on the Hough transform will be evaluated for the first time on a multi-core Intel Xeon E5-2697v2 CPU, an NVIDIA Tesla K20c GPU, and an Intel \xphi\ 7120 coprocessor. Preliminary time performance will be presented.

Comparison of Different Methods for Nonlinear Diffusive Shock Acceleration

We provide a both qualitative and quantitative comparison among different approaches aimed to solve the problem of non-linear diffusive acceleration of particles at shocks. In particular, we show that state-of-the-art models (numerical, Monte Carlo and semi-analytical), even if based on different physical assumptions and implementations, for typical environmental parameters lead to very consistent results in terms of shock hydrodynamics, cosmic ray spectrum and also escaping flux spectrum and anisotropy. Strong points and limits of each approach are also discussed, as a function of the problem one wants to study.

Chiral Logarithms Tamed

We derive non-linear recursion relations for the leading chiral logarithms (LLs). These relations not only provide a very efficient method of computation of LLs (e.g. the 33-loop contribution is calculated in a dozen of seconds on a PC) but also equip us with a powerful tool for the summation of the LLs. Our method is not limited to the chiral perturbation theory only, it is pertinent for any non-renormalizable effective field theory such as, for instance, the theory of critical phenomena, the low-energy quantum gravity, etc.

Large-N Summation of Chiral Logs for Generalized Parton Distributions

We demonstrate that in the region of Bjorken x ~m_π^2/(4πF_π)^2 and/or x ~|t|/(4πF_π)^2 the standard ChPT for the pion GPDs fails and one must perform all order resummation of ChPT. We perform such resummation in the large-N limit of the O(N+1) extension of the chiral theory. Explicit resummation allows us to reveal novel phenomena -- the form of the leading chiral correction to pion PDFs and GPDs depends on the small-x asymptotic of the pion PDFs. In particular, if the pion PDF in the chiral limit has the Regge-like small x behaviour q(x)~1/x^ω, the leading large impact parameter ($b_\perp\to\infty$) asymptotics of the quark distribution in the transverse plane has the form ($m_π=0$) $q(x,b_\perp)\sim 1/x^ω \ln^ω(b_\perp^2)/b_\perp^{2{(1+ω)}}$. This result is model independent and it is controlled completely by the all order resummed ChPT developed in this paper. This asymptotic interweaves with small-$x$ behaviour of usual PDFs, hence it depends on the scale, at which the corresponding PDF is defined. This is a new and interesting result in which the chiral expansion meets the QCD evolution.
