Leading logarithmic large-x resummation of off-diagonal splitting functions and coefficient functions

We analyze the iterative structure of unfactorized partonic structure functions in the large-x limit, and derive all-order expressions for the leading-logarithmic off-diagonal splitting functions P_gq and P_qg and the corresponding coefficient functions C_phi,q and C_2,g in Higgs- and gauge-boson exchange deep-inelastic scattering. The splitting functions are given in terms of a new function not encountered in perturbative QCD so far, and vanish maximally in the supersymmetric limit C_A - C_F to 0. The coefficient functions do not vanish in this limit, and are given by simple expressions in terms of the above new function and the well-known leading-logarithmic threshold exponential. Our results also apply to the evolution of fragmentation functions and semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation.

Higher-order predictions for splitting functions and coefficient functions from physical evolution kernels

We have studied the physical evolution kernels for nine non-singlet observables in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive e^+e^-annihilation and the Drell-Yan (DY) process, and for the flavour-singlet case of the photon- and heavy-top Higgs-exchange structure functions (F_2, F_phi) in DIS. All known contributions to these kernels show an only single-logarithmic large-x enhancement at all powers of 1-x. Conjecturing that this behaviour persists to (all) higher orders, we have predicted the highest three (DY: two) double logarithms of the higher-order non-singlet coefficient functions and of the four-loop singlet splitting functions. The coefficient-function predictions canbe written as exponentiations of 1/N-suppressed contributions in Mellin-N space which, however, are less predictive than the well-known exponentiation of the ln^k N terms.

On Higgs-exchange DIS, physical evolution kernels and fourth-order splitting functions at large x

We present the coefficient functions for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) via the exchange of a scalar phi directly coupling only to gluons, such as the Higgs boson in the limit of a very heavy top quark and n_f effectively massless light flavours, to the third order in perturbative QCD. The two-loop results are employed to construct the next-to-next-to-leading order physical evolution kernels for the system (F_2 F_phi) of flavour-singlet structure functions. The practical relevance of these kernels as an alternative to MSbar factorization is bedevilled by artificial double logarithms at small values of the scaling variable x, where the large top-mass limit ceases to be appropriate. However, they show an only single-logarithmic enhancement at large x. Conjecturing that this feature persists to the next order also in the present singlet case, the three-loop coefficient functions facilitate exact predictions (backed up by their particular colour structure) of the double-logarithmic contributions to the fourth-order singlet splitting functions, i.e., of the terms (1-x)^a ln^k(1-x) with k = 4, 5, 6 and k = 3, 4, 5, respectively, for the off-diagonal and diagonal quantities to all powers a in 1-x.

On non-singlet physical evolution kernels and large-x coefficient functions in perturbative QCD

We study the large-x behaviour of the physical evolution kernels for flavour non-singlet observables in deep-inelastic scattering, where x is the Bjorken variable, semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation and Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. Unlike the corresponding MSbar-scheme coefficient functions, all these kernels show a single-logarithmic large-x enhancement at all orders in 1-x. We conjecture that this universal behaviour, established by Feynman-diagram calculations up to the fourth order, holds at all orders in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The resulting predictions are presented for the highest ln^n(1-x) contributions to the higher-order coefficient functions. In Mellin-N space these predictions take the form of an exponentiation which, however, appears to be less powerful than the well-known soft-gluon exponentiation of the leading (1-x)^(-1) ln^n(1-x) terms. In particular in deep-inelastic scattering the 1/N corrections are non-negligible for all practically relevant N.

Higher-order threshold resummation for semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation

The complete soft-enhanced and virtual-gluon contributions are derived for the quark coefficient functions in semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. These terms enable us to extend the soft-gluon resummation for the fragmentation functions by two orders to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N^3LL) accuracy. The resummation exponent is found to be the same as for the structure functions in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. This finding, together with known results on the higher-order quark form factor, facilitates the determination of all soft and virtual contributions of the fourth-order difference of the coefficient functions for these two processes. Unlike the previous (N^2LL) order in the exponentiation, the numerical effect of the N^3LL contributions turns out to be negligible at LEP energies.

Threshold Resummation of the Structure Function F_L

The behaviour of the quark coefficient function for the longitudinal structure function F_L in deep-inelastic scattering is investigated for large values of the Bjorken variable x. We combine a highly plausible conjecture on the large-x limit of the physical evolution kernel for this quantity with our explicit three-loop results to derive the coefficients of the three leading large-x logarithms, alpha_s^n ln^(2n-1-k) (1-x), k = 1, 2, 3, to all orders in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. Corresponding results are derived for the non-C_F part of the gluon coefficient function suppressed by a factor 1-x, and for the analogous subleading (1-x) ln^k (1-x) contributions in the quark case. Our results appear to indicate an obstacle for an exponentiation with a higher logarithmic accuracy.

Parton Distributions

We provide an assessment of the state of the art in various issues related to experimental measurements, phenomenological methods and theoretical results relevant for the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their uncertainties, with the specific aim of providing benchmarks of different existing approaches and results in view of their application to physics at the LHC. We discuss higher order corrections, we review and compare different approaches to small x resummation, and we assess the possible relevance of parton saturation in the determination of PDFS at HERA and its possible study in LHC processes. We provide various benchmarks of PDF fits, with the specific aim of studying issues of error propagation, non-gaussian uncertainties, choice of functional forms of PDFs, and combination of data from different experiments and different processes. We study the impact of combined HERA (ZEUS-H1) structure function data, their impact on PDF uncertainties, and their implications for the computation of standard candle processes, and we review the recent F_L determination at HERA. Finally, we compare and assess methods for luminosity measurements at the LHC and the impact of PDFs on them.

Third-order QCD corrections to the charged-current structure function F_3

We compute the coefficient function for the charge-averaged W^(+/-)-exchange structure function F_3 in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. Our new three-loop contribution to this quantity forms, at not too small values of the Bjorken variable x, the dominant part of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. It thus facilitates improved determinations of the strong coupling alpha_s and of 1/Q^2 power corrections from scaling violations measured in neutrino-nucleon DIS. The expansion of F_3 in powers of alpha_s is stable at all values of x relevant to measurements at high scales Q^2. At small x the third-order coefficient function is dominated by diagrams with the colour structure d_abc d^abc not present at lower orders. At large x the coefficient function for F_3 is identical to that of F_1 up to terms vanishing for x to 1.

Towards the NNLO evolution of polarised parton distributions

We report on the first calculation of the structure function g_1 in polarised deep-inelastic scattering to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. The calculation follows the dispersive approach already used for the corresponding unpolarised cases of F_2,L, but additionally involves higher tensor integrals and the Dirac matrix gamma_5 in D unequal 4 dimensions. Our results confirm all known two-loop expressions including the coefficient functions of Zijlstra and van Neerven not independently verified before. At three loops we extract the helicity-difference next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) quark-quark and gluon-quark splitting functions Delta P_qq and Delta P_qg. The results exhibit interesting features concerning sum rules and the momentum-fraction limits x to 1 and x to 0.

NNLO Time-like Splitting Functions in QCD

We review the status of the calculation of the time-like splitting functions for the evolution of fragmentation functions to the next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. By employing relations between space-like and time-like deep-inelastic processes, all quark-quark and the gluon-gluon time-like splitting functions have been obtained to three loops. The corresponding quantities for the quark-gluon and gluon-quark splitting at this order are presently still unknown except for their second Mellin moments.

On Third-Order Timelike Splitting Functions and Top-Mediated Higgs Decay into Hadrons

We employ relations between spacelike and timelike deep-inelastic processes in perturbative QCD to calculate the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions to the timelike quark-quark and gluon-gluon splitting functions for the evolution of flavour-singlet fragmentation distributions. We briefly address the end-point behaviour and the numerical size of these third-order corrections, and write down the second moments of all four timelike splitting functions. In the same manner we re-derive the NNLO result for the Higgs-boson decay rate into hadrons in the limit of a heavy top quark and five massless flavours, and confirm the recent N^3LO computation of this quantity.

Differences between charged-current coefficient functions

Second- and third-order results are presented for the structure functions of charged-current deep-inelastic scattering in the framework of massless perturbative QCD. We write down the two-loop differences between the corresponding crossing-even and -odd coefficient functions, including those for the longitudinal structure function not covered in the literature so far. At three loops we compute the lowest five moments of these differences for all three structure functions and provide approximate expressions in Bjorken-$x$ space. Also calculated is the related third-order coefficient-function correction to the Gottfried sum rule. We confirm the conjectured suppression of these quantities if the number of colours is large. Finally we derive the second- and third-order QCD contributions to the Paschos-Wolfenstein ratio used for the determination of the weak mixing angle from neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. These contributions are found to be small.

Higher-Order Corrections in Threshold Resummation

We extend the threshold resummation exponents G^N in Mellin-N space to the fourth logarithmic (N^3LL) order collecting the terms alpha_s^2 (alpha_s ln N)^n to all orders in the strong coupling constant as. Comparing the results to our previous three-loop calculations for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), we derive the universal coefficients B_q and B_g governing the final-state jet functions to order alpha_s^3, extending the previous quark and gluon results by one and two orders. A curious relation is found at second order between these quantities, the splitting functions and the large-angle soft emissions in Drell-Yan type processes. We study the numerical effect of the N^3LL corrections using both the fully exponentiated form and the expansion of the coefficient function in towers of logarithms.

Higher-Order Soft Corrections to Lepton Pair and Higgs Boson Production

Utilizing recent three-loop results on the quark and gluon splitting functions and form factors, we derive the complete threshold-enhanced third-order (N^3LO) QCD corrections to the total cross sections for the production of lepton pairs and the Higgs boson in hadron collisions. These results, for the latter case obtained in the heavy top-quark limit, are employed to extend the threshold resummation for these processes to the fourth logarithmic order. We investigate the numerical impact of the higher-order corrections for Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our results, suitably treated in Mellin N-space, provide a sufficiently accurate approximation to the full N^3LO contributions. Corrections of about 5% at the LHC and 10% at the Tevatron are found for typical Higgs masses. The N^3LO predictions exhibit a considerably reduced dependence on the renormalization scale with, for the first time, stationary points close to the Higgs mass.

NNLO splitting and coefficient functions with time-like kinematics

We discuss recent results on the three-loop (next-to-next-to-leading order, NNLO) time-like splitting functions of QCD and the two-loop (NNLO) coefficient functions in one-particle inclusive e+e- annihilation. These results form the basis for extracting fragmentation functions for light and heavy flavors with NNLO accuracy that will be needed at the LHC and ILC. The two-loop calculations have been performed in Mellin space based on a new method, the main features of which we also describe briefly.

Third-order QCD results on form factors and coefficient functions

We summarize recent higher-order QCD results based, directly or indirectly, on the Mellin-space computation of the next-to-next-to-leading-order splitting functions governing the evolution of hadronic parton distributions. Specifically, we briefly present third-order results for the coefficient functions in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (including the structure function F_3 not published so far), the on-shell quark and gluon form factors, and the total cross section for Higgs production at hadron colliders.

Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order Evolution of Non-Singlet Fragmentation Functions

We have investigated the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to inclusive hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation and the related parton fragmentation distributions, the `time-like' counterparts of the `space-like' deep-inelastic structure functions and parton densities. We have re-derived the corresponding second-order coefficient functions in massless perturbative QCD, which so far had been calculated only by one group. Moreover we present, for the first time, the third-order splitting functions governing the NNLO evolution of flavour non-singlet fragmentation distributions. These results have been obtained by two independent methods relating time-like quantities to calculations performed in deep-inelastic scattering. We briefly illustrate the numerical size of the NNLO corrections, and make a prediction for the difference of the yet unknown time-like and space-like splitting functions at the fourth order in the strong coupling constant.

Photon-Parton Splitting Functions at the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order of QCD

We have calculated the splitting functions governing the evolution of the unpolarized parton distributions of the photon at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of massless perturbative QCD. The results, presented here mainly in terms of compact and accurate parametrizations, are consistent with our previous approximations based on the lowest six even-integer Mellin moments. Consequently the NNLO corrections are small in both the MSbar and the DIS_gamma factorization schemes at momentum fractions x >~ 0.1.
