Improved performance of polycrystalline antiferromagnet/ferromagnet stack by nitrogen assisted deposition

The deposition process of the IrMn$_3$/Co$_{70}$Fe$_{30}$ bilayer of antiferromagnet/ferromagnet (AF/FM) type was modified by introducing a nitrogen additive in argon plasma during the magnetron sputtering of the Co$_{70}$Fe$_{30}$ layer. This slight modification significantly enhanced the exchange bias energy of the AF/FM bilayer for an IrMn layer thickness ranging from 20Å to 50Å and reduced the coercivity of the FM layer. Calculations indicate that the boost in exchange bias energy and the reduction in coercivity can be attributed to the increased anisotropy energy of the antiferromagnet, resulting in more effective pinning of the ferromagnet by antiferromagnetic grains. The increase in anisotropy is caused by the diffusion of nitrogen from the FM into the AF layer, as established by X-ray diffraction, Neutron Reflectometry, and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism. Our research allows to improve magnetic characteristics of exchange-coupled FM/AF structures through minor modifications in the sputtering process and/or save up to 20% of the costly IrMn$_3$ target by reducing the thickness of the AF layer.

Depth resolved study of annealing in IrMn/(Fe, Co, CoFe) exchange bias systems

Depth resolved study of structural and magnetic profiles of antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) system upon annealing was performed in this work. We studied systems comprising of AFM IrMn and FM (Co, Fe, Co$_{70}$Fe$_{30}$) structures using polarized neutron and soft X-ray scattering, secondary neutral spectrometry, and magnetometry. Structural depth profiles obtained from neutron reflectometry indicate non-homogeneity of the AFM layer even before annealing, which is associated with the migration of manganese to the surface of the sample. Annealing of samples with CoFe and Co layers leads to a slight increase ($\sim$ 5 %) in the migration of manganese, which, however, does not lead to significant degradation of the exchange coupling at the AFM/FM interface. A significantly different picture was observed in the Fe/IrMn systems where a strong migration of iron into the AFM layer was observed upon annealing of the sample, leading to erosion of the magnetic profile, the formation of a non-magnetic alloy and degradation of the pinning strength. This study can be useful in the design of AF/FM systems in different spintronics devices, including HDD read heads, where thermal annealing is applied at different stages of the device manufacturing process.

Neutron optical tuning of Fe/11B4CTi multilayers for optimal polarization and increased reflectivity for polarizing neutron optics

The concept of scattering length density tuning for improved polarization is investigated for Fe/11B4CTi multilayers and compared to the commonly used Fe/Si system in polarizing multilayer neutron optics. X-ray and neutron reflectivity, magnetization, and neutron polarization have been measured on such multilayers, highlighting differences from conventional Fe/Si multilayers. The multilayer systems were deposited with 25 Å period thickness, a layer thickness ratio of 0.35 and 20 periods, using ion-assisted DC magnetron sputtering. Replacing Si with 11B4CTi for these multilayers showed an increase in reflectivity due to a reduction in interface width. By tuning the ratio between 11B4C and Ti in the non-magnetic layers, a broad range of scattering length density values was achieved, facilitating scattering length density contrast matching between layers for spin-down neutrons, thereby enhancing polarization. These findings demonstrate the potential of Fe/11B4CTi multilayers as a promising option for polarizing neutron optics and highlight the concept of scattering length density tuning in a large range using 11B4CTi.

Morphology and magnetic properties of nanocomposite magnetic multilayers {[(Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$]/[C]}$_{47}$

We report on the investigation of morphology, magnetic and conductive properties of the mutilayered nanostructures [(Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$]/[C]$_{47}$ consisting of the contacting magnetic (Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$)$_{34}$(SiO$_2$)$_{66}$ nanocomposite and amorphous semiconductor carbon C layers. It is shown by Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering method that the ordering and the size of nanoparticles in the magnetic layers do not change profoundly with increasing of carbon layer thickness. Meanwhile, the electrical conductance and the magnetic properties are significantly varied: resistance of the samples changes by four orders of magnitude and superparamagnetic blocking temperature changes from 15 K to 7 K with the increment of carbon layer thickness $h_c$ from 0.4 nm to 1.8 nm. We assume that the formation of the homogeneous semiconductor interlayer leads to modification of the metal-insulator growth process that drives the changes in the magnetic and conductive properties.

X-ray scattering characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles Langmuir film on water surface and on a solid substrate

In the present study we compare a structure of a Langmuir film assembled from magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on water surface and a structure of the same film after its transfer to a solid substrate by the Langmuir-Schaefer method. In contrast to most of related studies, where different techniques are used to characterize the films before and after the deposition, we use the same combination of X-ray reflectometry and Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray scattering. In both cases -- on a liquid and on a solid substrate -- the film was identified as a well-ordered monolayer of the nanoparticles laterally organized in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. However parameters of the lattice were found to be slightly different depending on the type of the substrate. It is also demonstrated that Langmuir-Schaefer technique is the right way for deposition of such kind of the particles on a solid substrate.

Self-assembly of a binary mixture of iron oxide nanoparticles in Langmuir film: X-ray scattering study

In present study we exploited Langmuir technique to produce self-assembled arrays composed of monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles 10 nm and 20 nm in diameter and of their binary mixture. A combination of in-situ X-ray reflectometry and Grazing-incident small-Angle X-ray scattering was used to obtain in-plane and out-of-plane structure of the arrays directly on the water surface. Surface pressure isotherms and X-ray reflectometry analysis showed that monodisperse 10 nm nanoparticles form a highly ordered monolayer, while 20 nm particles pack in three-dimensional clusters with a short-range (nearest-neighbor) correlations between the particles. In a binary mixture of 10 nm and 20 nm nanoparticles composed in proportion 3:1 the self-assembly process results in a structure where the monolayer of 10 nm particles is perturbed by the larger particles. Non-trivial mixing causes an enlargement of interparticle distance but keeps the symmetry of two-dimensional lattice of smaller nanoparticles. Estimation of the acting interactions and micromagnetic simulation suggest the optimal formation for monodisperse and binary ensembles.

Polarized neutron reflectometry study from iron oxide nanoparticles monolayer

We report on the polarized neutron reflectometry investigation of monolayer of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles assembled by the Langmuir-Schaefer method. After deposition onto a solid substrate the polarized neutron reflectometry measurements in the external magnetic field were carried out. Thickness, density, roughness and in-depth resolved magnetization profile of the resulted layer were obtained from accurate fitting routine.

Role of gallium diffusion in the formation of a magnetically dead layer at Y3Fe5O12 / Gd3Ga5O12 epitaxial interface

We have clarified the origin of magnetically dead interface layer formed in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films grown at above 700°C onto gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate by means of laser molecular beam epitaxy. The diffusion-assisted formation of a Ga-rich region at the YIG / GGG interface is demonstrated by means of composition depth profiling performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray and neutron reflectometry. Our finding is in sharp contrast to the earlier expressed assumption that Gd acts as a migrant element in the YIG/GGG system. We further correlate the presence of Ga-rich transition layer with considerable quenching of ferromagnetic resonance and spin wave propagation in thin YIG films. Finally, we clarify the origin of the enigmatic low-density overlayer that is often observed in neutron and X-ray reflectometry studies of the YIG / GGG epitaxial system.

From lepton interactions to hadron and nuclear ones at high multiplicity

Multiplicity data up to 200 GeV in e+e- annihilation are described well by the two-stage model based on pQCD and suggested the phenomenological scheme of hadronization. This model confirms the fragmentation mechanism of hadronization (in vacuum). It allows to estimate mean multiplicity at 500 GeV and 1 TeV. Gluon dominance model is the modification of this model for the description of hadronic interactions. It was realised by an inclusion of gluons. It demonstrates very strong evidence of the recombination mechanism of hadronization. In this case, the mean multiplicity of hadrons formed from a single gluon grows with energy and it exceeds the corresponding values for lepton interactions. At the same time, the region of high multiplicity is stipulated for splitting of active gluons. The excess of soft photon yield is experimentally confirmed at Nuclotron (JINR) in the interactions of the 3.5A GeV/c deuteron and lithium beams with the carbon target.

Charm production nearby threshold in pA-interactions at 70 GeV

The results of the SERP-E-184 experiment at the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino) are presented. Interactions of the 70 GeV proton beam with C, Si and Pb targets were studied to detect decays of charmed $D^0$, $\overline D^0$, $D^+$, $D^-$ mesons and $Λ_c^+$ baryon near their production threshold. Measurements of lifetimes and masses are shown a good agreement with PDG data. The inclusive cross sections of charm production and their A-dependencies were obtained. The yields of these particles are compared with the theoretical predictions and the data of other experiments. The measured cross section of the total open charm production ($σ_{\mathrm {tot}}(c\overline c)$ = 7.1 $\pm $ 2.3(stat) $\pm $1.4(syst) $μ$b/nucleon) at the collision c.m. energy $\sqrt {s}$ = 11.8 GeV is well above the QCD model predictions. The contributions of different species of charmed particles to the total cross section of the open charm production in proton-nucleus interactions vary with energy.

Soft photon registration at Nuclotron

First results of a soft photon yield in nucleus-nuclear interactions at 3.5 GeV per nucleon are presented. These photons have been registered at Nuclotron (LHEP, JINR) by an electromagnetic calorimeter built in the SVD Collaboration. The obtained spectra confirm the excess yield in the energy region less than 50 MeV in comparison with theoretical predictions and agree with previous experiments at high-energy interactions.

Magnetic induction and domain walls in magnetic thin films at remanence

Magnetic domain walls in thin films can be well analyzed using polarized neutron reflectometry. Well defined streaks in the off-specular spin-flip scattering maps are explained by neutron refraction at perpendicular Néel walls. The position of the streaks depends only on the magnetic induction within the domains, whereas the intensity of the off-specular magnetic scattering depends on the spin-flip probability at the domain walls and on the average size of the magnetic domains. This effect is fundamentally different and has to be clearly distinguished from diffuse scattering originating from the size distribution of magnetic domains. Polarized neutron reflectivity experiments were carried out using a $^3$He gas spin-filter with a analyzing power as high as 96% and a neutron transmission of approx 35%. Furthermore, the off-specular magnetic scattering was enhanced by using neutron resonance and neutron standing wave techniques.

Spin-resolved off-specular neutron scattering from magnetic domain walls using the polarized $^3He$ gas spin filter

We report on the use of the polarized $^3$He gas filter and neutron resonant enhancement techniques for the measurement of spin-polarized diffuse neutron scattering due to ferromagnetic domains. A CoO/Co exchange biased bilayer was grown on a Ti/Cu/$Al_2O_3$ neutron resonator template. The system is cooled in an applied magnetic field of $H_a=2000$ Oe through the Néel temperature of the antiferromagnet to 10 K where the applied magnetic field is swept as to measure the magnetic hysteresis loop. After the second magnetization reversal at the coercive field $H_{c2}=+ 230$ Oe, the system is supposed to approach the original magnetic configuration. In order to prove that this is not the case for our exchange biased bilayer, we have measured four off-specular maps I++, I+-, I-+, I-- at $H_a \approx + 370$ Oe, where the Co magnetic spins were mostly reversed. They show a striking behavior in the total reflection region: while the nonspin-flip scattering exhibits no diffuse reflectivity, the spin-flip scattering shows strong diffuse scattering at incident angles which satisfy the resonance conditions. Moreover the spin-flip off-specular part of the reflectivity is asymmetric. The I-+ intensity occurs at higher exit angles than the specularly reflected neutrons, and the I+- intensity is shifted to lower angles. Their intensities are noticeably different and there is a splitting of the resonance positions for the up and down neutron spins ($α_{n} ^{+} \ne α_{n} ^{-}$) . Additionally, a strong influence of the stray fields from magnetic domains to the resonance splitting is observed.
