Combined constraints on dark photons from high-energy collisions, cosmology, and astrophysics

We investigate a dark sector coupled to the Standard Model (SM) through a kinetically mixed dark photon $U$ associated with a new $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry. Kinetic mixing $\varepsilon$ induces an effective coupling to the electromagnetic current, while $U$ interacts with stable dark matter (DM) $χ$ via a dark gauge coupling $g_χ$. Our analysis is based on the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, extended to include dark photon production and decay into dileptons ($U\!\to e^+e^-$). In PHSD, dark photons are produced in high-energy collisions through Dalitz decays of light mesons ($π^0,η,η',ω$), Delta-resonances ($Δ\!\to N U$), direct vector meson decays ($ρ,ω,ϕ\!\to U$), kaon decays, and $q\bar q\!\to U$ annihilation. Building on previous PHSD benchmarks against dilepton data, we extract upper limits on $\varepsilon^2(m_U,m_χ,α_χ)$ in both the visible regime ($m_U<2m_χ$), where $U\!\to e^+e^-$ dominates, and the invisible regime ($m_U>2m_χ$), where $U\!\toχ\barχ$ is kinematically open. Cosmological and astrophysical constraints are incorporated in two complementary ways. First, we compute the velocity-dependent self-interaction cross section $σ/m_χ$ for Yukawa-mediated SIDM and confront it with bounds from dwarf galaxies, galaxy groups, and clusters. Second, we determine thermal relic target curves by computing the relic abundance and requiring $Ω_{\rm DM}h^2\simeq 0.12$, consistent with \textit{Planck} measurements of the cosmic microwave background. Combining PHSD limits on $\varepsilon^2$ with relic density and self-interaction requirements, we exclude regions of the $(m_χ,m_U)$ plane for each DM realization (Dirac, Majorana, or complex scalar) and identify benchmark scenarios in which heavy-ion, cosmological, and astrophysical constraints are simultaneously satisfied.

Constraints on Kinetic Mixing of Dark Photons from Dilepton Spectra

Dark photons, the hypothetical gauge bosons associated with an additional $U(1)^{\prime}$ symmetry, can couple to Standard Model particles through a small kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon$ with the ordinary photon. This mechanism provides a portal between the dark sector and visible matter. In this study, we present a procedure to derive theoretical upper bounds on the kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon^2(M_U)$ by analyzing dilepton spectra from heavy-ion collisions across a broad energy range, from SIS to LHC energies. Our analysis is based on the microscopic Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which successfully reproduces the measured dilepton spectra in $p+p$, $p+A$, and $A+A$ collisions across the same energy range. Besides the dilepton channels resulting from interactions and decays of Standard Model particles (such as mesons and baryons), the PHSD has been extended to include the decay of hypothetical dark photons into dileptons, $U \to e^+ e^-$. The production of these dark photons occurs via Dalitz decays of $π^0$, $η$, $ω$, $η^{\prime}$, and $Δ$ resonances; direct decays of $ρ$, $ω$, and $ϕ$; the kaon mode $K^+ \to π^+ U$; and thermal $q\bar q$ annihilation in the quark-gluon plasma. Our results show that high-precision measurements of dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions provide a sensitive and competitive probe of dark photons in the MeV to multi-GeV mass range. Furthermore, we quantify the experimental accuracy required to constrain the remaining viable parameter space of kinetic mixing in dark photon scenarios.

Nonlinear electrodynamics for the vacuum of Dirac materials. Photon magnetic properties and radiation pressures

We investigate the magnetic properties of photons propagating through Dirac materials in a magnetic field, considering both vacuum and medium contributions. Photon propagation properties are obtained through a second-order expansion of non-linear Euler-Heisenberg electrodynamics at finite density and temperature considering Dirac material parameters (Dirac fine structure constant, band gap and Fermi velocity). Total magnetization (including electrons and photon contributions) and photon-effective magnetic moment are computed. Observables such as photon energy density, radiation pressure, and Poynting vector are obtained by an average of components of the energy-momentum tensor. All quantities are expressed in terms of Lagrangian derivatives. Those related to the vacuum are valid for any value of the external magnetic field, and both the weak and strong field limits are recovered. We discuss some ideas of experiments that may contribute to testing in Dirac materials the phenomenology of the strong magnetic field in the quantum electrodynamic vacuum and how non-linear corrections on the magnetization, radiation pressure, and birefringence, are amplified up to $10^3$ times QED corrections.

The photon time delay in magnetized vacuum magnetosphere

We study the transverse propagation of photons in a magnetized vacuum considering radiative corrections in the one-loop approximation. The dispersion equation is modified due to the magnetized photon self-energy in the transparency region ($0<ω<2m_e$). The aim of our study is to explore propagation of photons in a neutron star magnetosphere (described by magnetized vacuum). The solution of the dispersion equation is obtained in terms of analytic functions. The larger the magnetic field, the lower the phase velocity and the more the dispersion curve deviates from the light-cone. For fixed values of the frequency, we study the dependence of photon time delay with the magnetic field strength, as well as with distance. For the latter, we adopt a magnetic dipole configuration and obtain that -- contrary to the expectation, according to the traditional time delay of photons in the interstellar medium -- photons of higher energy experience a longer time delay. A discussion of potential causes of this behaviour is presented.
