Using Geant4 in the BaBar Simulation

Babar was the first large experiment to incorporate Geant4 into its detector simulation. Since July 2001, 1.5 billion Babar events have been produced using this simulation. In a typical e+e- -> Upsilon(4s) -> B0 B0bar event, between 30 and 60 tracks are produced in the generator and propagated through the detector, using decay, electromagnetic and hadronic processes provided by the Geant4 toolkit. The material model of the detector is very detailed and a special particle transportation module was developed so that minute features (on the few micron scale) would be sampled in the propagation without sacrificing performance. The propagation phase for such an event requires 5 CPU seconds on an 866 MHz processor. Execution speeds for other Babar event types will also be presented. Validation of simulated events with Babar data is ongoing, and results of Monte Carlo/data comparisons will be shown. A discussion of the design of the simulation code, how the Geant4 toolkit is used, and ongoing efforts to improve the agreement between data and Monte Carlo will also be presented.

A Resonant Cavity for Single-Shot Emittance Measurement

We present a non-invasive, resonant cavity based approach to beam emittance measurement of a shot-to-shot non-circular beam pulse of multi-bunches. In a resonant cavity, desired field components can be enhanced up to Q_L_lambda/pi, where Q_L_lambda is the loaded Q of the resonance mode lambda, when the cavity resonant mode matches with the beam operating frequency. In particular, a Quad-cavity, with its quadrupole mode at beam operating frequency, extracts the beam quad-moment exclusively, utilizing the symmetry of the cavity and some simple networks to suppress common modes. Six successive beam quadrupole moment measurements, performed at different betatron phases in a linear transport system, allow us to determine the beam emittance, i.e., the beam size and shape in the beam's phase space. One measurement alone provides the rms-beam size if the beam position is given, for instance, by nearby beam-position-monitors. This paper describes the basic design and analysis of a Quad-cavity beam monitoring system.

Observation of Plasma Focusing of a 28.5 GeV Positron Beam

The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.

Results on Plasma Focusing of High Energy Density Electron and Positron Beams

We present results from the SLAC E-150 experiment on plasma focusing of high energy density electron and, for the first time, positron beams. We also discuss measurements on plasma lens-induced synchrotron radiation, longitudinal dynamics of plasma focusing, and laser- and beam-plasma interactions.
