Elastic proton-proton and pion-proton scattering in holographic QCD

The elastic proton-proton and pion-proton scattering processes are investigated in the framework of holographic QCD. Considering the Pomeron and Reggeon exchange in the Regge regime, the total and differential cross sections are calculated. In the model setup, the Pomeron and Reggeon exchange are described by the Reggeized spin-2 glueball and vector meson propagator, respectively. For the differential cross sections, contributions of the Coulomb interaction are also taken into account. Adjustable parameters involved in the model are determined with the experimental data, and it is presented that the resulting cross sections are consistent with the data in a wide kinematic region.

Radiation-tolerant polarized solid target

Polarized targets evolved into indispensable tools in particle and nuclear physics. However, the polarized solid target is degraded by high-intense beam irradiation, known as radiation damage due to target heating and radical generation. We demonstrated a radiation-tolerant polarized solid target operating at room temperature. An annealing allows the spontaneous repair of the damage by reducing unwanted radicals. Using a single crystal of $\it p$-terphenyl doped with 0.01 mol\% pentacene-$\it d$$_{14}$, Dynamic Nuclear Polarization using photoexcited triplet electrons (Triplet-DNP) was applied to proton spins at room temperature and in 0.39 T. For the proof of concept, a deuteron beam with an energy of 135 MeV/u and the intensities of 10$^7$-10$^9$ counts per second (cps) was irradiated. The proton polarization was determined to be 3.0\% $\pm$0.2\%$\rm{{(stat.)}}$ $\pm$0.1\%$\rm {{(sys.)}}$ from a scattering asymmetry. The polarization was almost not attenuated up to 10$^9$ cps, but the target crystal was yellowed. The visible-light absorption spectroscopy suggested irreversible radiation damage due to missing protons by the knock-out reaction. The room-temperature polarized solid target allows impractical experiments with the conventional target system, leading to a next-generation spin-dependent accelerator science.

Unravelling the asphericities in the explosion and multi-faceted circumstellar matter of SN 2023ixf

We present a detailed investigation of photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations of the Type II SN 2023ixf. Earlier studies have provided compelling evidence for a delayed shock breakout from a confined dense circumstellar matter (CSM) enveloping the progenitor star. The temporal evolution of polarization in SN~2023ixf revealed three distinct peaks in polarization evolution at 1.4 d, 6.4 d, and 79.2 d, indicating an asymmetric dense CSM, an aspherical shock front and clumpiness in the low-density extended CSM, and an aspherical inner ejecta/He-core. SN 2023ixf displayed two dominant axes, one along the CSM-outer ejecta and the other along the inner ejecta/He-core, showcasing the independent origin of asymmetry in the early and late evolution. The argument for an aspherical shock front is further strengthened by the presence of a high-velocity broad absorption feature in the blue wing of the Balmer features in addition to the P-Cygni absorption post 16 d. Hydrodynamical light curve modeling indicated a progenitor of 10 solar mass with a radius of 470 solar radii and explosion energy of 2e51 erg, along with 0.06 solar mass of 56-Ni, though these properties are not unique due to modeling degeneracies. The modeling also indicated a two-zone CSM: a confined dense CSM extending up to 5e14 cm, with a mass-loss rate of 1e-2 solar mass per year, and an extended CSM spanning from 5e14 cm to at least 1e16cm with a mass-loss rate of 1e-4 solar mass per year, both assuming a wind-velocity of 10 km/s. The early nebular phase observations display an axisymmetric line profile of [OI], red-ward attenuation of the emission of Halpha post 125 days, and flattening in the Ks-band, marking the onset of dust formation.

Absolute $\rm ^3$He polarimetry for a double-chambered cell using transmission of thermal neutrons

We present an absolute $^3$He polarimetry method based on thermal neutron transmission for a double-chambered cell. This method utilizes the fact that a $^3$He nucleus has a large absorption cross section and a spin dependence for thermal neutrons. The cell had a pumping chamber and a target chamber. Polarized $^3$He gas was produced in the pumping chamber by SEOP and then diffused into the target chamber. The $^3$He polarization in the target chamber was determined by comparing the neutron transmissions with the polarized and unpolarized targets. The measurement was performed at the RIKEN Accelerator-Driven Compact Neutron Source. The $^3$He polarization in the target chamber was determined with a statistical error of 1.8% and systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. This method can be used to obtain high-precision data of spin observables in few-nucleon scattering for the investigation of nuclear forces.

Shallow NV centers augmented by exploiting n-type diamond

Creation of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers at the nanoscale surface region in diamond, while retaining their excellent spin and optical properties, is essential for applications in quantum technology. Here, we demonstrate the extension of the spin-coherence time ($\it{T}$${_2}$), the stabilization of the charge state, and an improvement of the creation yield of NV centers formed by the ion-implantation technique at a depth of $\sim$15 nm in phosphorus-doped n-type diamond. The longest $\it{T}$${_2}$ of about 580 $μ$s of a shallow NV center approaches the one in bulk diamond limited by the nuclear spins of natural abundant $^{13}$C. The averaged $\it{T}$${_2}$ in n-type diamond is over 1.7 times longer than that in pure non-doped diamond. Moreover, the stabilization of the charge state and the more than twofold improvement of the creation yield are confirmed. The enhancements for the shallow NV centers in an n-type diamond-semiconductor are significant for future integrated quantum devices.

Proton-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering at intermediate energies

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $\rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $Δ$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $\rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $Δ$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$\rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering.

Measurement of 3He analyzing power for p-3He scattering using the polarized 3He target

Proton-3He scattering is one of the good probes to study the T=3/2 channel of three--nucleon forces. We have measured 3He analyzing powers for p-3He elastic scattering with the polarized 3He target at 70 and 100 MeV. The data are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the modern nucleon--nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies are found between the data and the calculations at the angles where the 3He analyzing power takes the minimum and maximum values, which are not explained by taking into account Delta-isobar degrees of freedom.

Econophysics of precious stones

The importance of the power law has been well realized in econophysics over the last decade. For instance, the distribution of the rate of stock price variation and of personal assets show the power law. While these results reveal the striking scale invariance of financial markets, the behaviour of price in real economy is less known in spite of its extreme importance. As an example of markets in real economy, here we take up the price of precious stones which increases with size while the amount of their production rapidly decreases with size. We show for the first time that the price of natural precious stones (quartz crystal ball, gemstones such as diamond, emerald, and sapphire) as a function of weight obeys the power law. This indicates that the price is determined by the same evaluation measure for different sizes. Our results demonstrate that not only the distribution of an economical observable but also the price itself obeys the power law. We anticipate our findings to be a starting point for the quantitative study of scale invariance in real economy. While the Black--Sholes model provided the framework for optimal pricing in financial markets, our method of analysis prvides a new framework that characterizes the market in real economy.

Observation of gamma-rays greater than 10 TeV from Markarian 421

We have observed Markarian 421 in January and March 2001 with the CANGAROO-II imaging Cherenkov telescope during an extraordinarily high state at TeV energies. From 14 hours observations at very large zenith angles, $\sim70^\circ$, a signal of 298 $\pm$ 52 gamma-ray--like events (5.7 $σ$) was detected at $E>10$ TeV, where a higher sensitivity is achieved than those of usual observations near the zenith, owing to a greatly increased collecting area. Under the assumption of an intrinsic power-law spectrum, we derived a differential energy spectrum $dN/dE = (3.3 \pm 0.9_{stat.} \pm 0.3_{syst.})\times10^{-13} (E/10 {Te V})^{-(4.0 ^{+0.9}_{-0.6}_{stat.} \pm 0.3_{syst.})}$ ph./cm$^2$/sec/TeV, which is steeper than those previously measured around 1 TeV, and supports the evidence for a cutoff in the spectrum of Markarian 421. However, the 4 $σ$ excess at energies greater than 20 TeV in our data favors a cutoff energy of $\sim$8 TeV, at the upper end of the range previously reported from measurements at TeV energies.

The CANGAROO-III Project: Status report

We report on the status of the construction of an array of four 10 m atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes for gamma-ray astronomy, near Woomera, in South Australia -- the CANGAROO-III project. The first telescope of this array is the upgraded version of the CANGAROO-II 7 m telescope and has been in operation since March 2000. The second telescope, an improved version of the first, is being constructed for installation in late 2001. Stereoscopic observation of sub TeV gamma-rays with the two 10 m telescopes will begin in 2002 and the full array will be operational in 2004.

Search for gamma-rays above 10 TeV from Markarian 421 in a high state with the CANGAROO-II telescope

A preliminary result from Markarian 421 observations in the energy region above 10 TeV with the CANGAROO-II 10 m telescope is presented. In January 2001, the HEGRA group reported that Markarian 421 had become very active, with flux levels up to 4 times that of the Crab Nebula. As a result, we observed Mkn 421 during six nights from January 24th to February 1st, and four nights from March 1st to 4th. Observations were carried out using the very large zenith angle technique ($\sim$70 degree) and the energy threshold is estimated from Monte Carlo simulations to be around 10 TeV. We have detected gamma-ray emission in this energy range.
