Comment on ``Reduction of static field equation of Faddeev model to first order PDE'', arXiv:0707.2207

The authors of the article Phys. Lett. B 652 (2007) 384, (arXiv:0707.2207), propose an interesting method to solve the Faddeev model by reducing it to a set of first order PDEs. They first construct a vectorial quantity $\bm α$, depending on the original field and its first derivatives, in terms of which the field equations reduce to a linear first order equation. Then they find vectors $\bm α_1$ and $\bm α_2$ which identically obey this linear first order equation. The last step consists in the identification of the $\bm α_i$ with the original $\bm α$ as a function of the original field. Unfortunately, the derivation of this last step in the paper cited above contains an error which invalidates most of its results.

Integrability in Theories with Local U(1) Gauge Symmetry

Using a recently developed method, based on a generalization of the zero curvature representation of Zakharov and Shabat, we study the integrability structure in the Abelian Higgs model. It is shown that the model contains integrable sectors, where integrability is understood as the existence of infinitely many conserved currents. In particular, a gauge invariant description of the weak and strong integrable sectors is provided. The pertinent integrability conditions are given by a U(1) generalization of the standard strong and weak constraints for models with two dimensional target space. The Bogomolny sector is discussed, as well, and we find that each Bogomolny configuration supports infinitely many conserved currents. Finally, other models with U(1) gauge symmetry are investigated.

New Integrable Sectors in Skyrme and 4-dimensional CP^n Model

The application of a weak integrability concept to the Skyrme and $CP^n$ models in 4 dimensions is investigated. A new integrable subsystem of the Skyrme model, allowing also for non-holomorphic solutions, is derived. This procedure can be applied to the massive Skyrme model, as well. Moreover, an example of a family of chiral Lagrangians providing exact, finite energy Skyrme-like solitons with arbitrary value of the topological charge, is given. In the case of $CP^n$ models a tower of integrable subsystems is obtained. In particular, in (2+1) dimensions a one-to-one correspondence between the standard integrable submodel and the BPS sector is proved. Additionally, it is shown that weak integrable submodels allow also for non-BPS solutions. Geometric as well as algebraic interpretations of the integrability conditions are also given.

Soliton stability in some knot soliton models

We study the issue of stability of static soliton-like solutions in some non-linear field theories which allow for knotted field configurations. Concretely, we investigate the AFZ model, based on a Lagrangian quartic in first derivatives with infinitely many conserved currents, for which infinitely many soliton solutions are known analytically. For this model we find that sectors with different (integer) topological charge (Hopf index) are not separated by an infinite energy barrier. Further, if variations which change the topological charge are allowed, then the static solutions are not even critical points of the energy functional. We also explain why soliton solutions can exist at all, in spite of these facts. In addition, we briefly discuss the Nicole model, which is based on a sigma-model type Lagrangian. For the Nicole model we find that different topological sectors are separated by an infinite energy barrier.

Hopf solitons and Hopf Q-balls on S^3

Field theories with a $S^2$-valued unit vector field living on $S^3 \times \RR$ space-time are investigated. The corresponding eikonal equation, which is known to provide an integrable sector for various sigma models in different spaces, is solved giving static as well as time-dependent multiply knotted configurations on $S^3$ with arbitrary values of the Hopf index. Using these results, we then find a set of hopfions with topological charge $Q_H=m^2$, $m \in \mathbf{Z}$, in the integrable subsector of the pure $CP^1$ model. In addition, we show that the $CP^1$ model with a potential term provides time-dependent solitons. In the case of the so-called "new baby Skyrme" potential we find, e.g., exact stationary hopfions, i.e., topological $Q$-balls. Our results further enable us to construct exact static and stationary Hopf solitons in the Faddeev--Niemi model with or without the new baby Skyrme potential. Generalizations for a large class of models are also discussed.

Investigation of the Nicole model

We study soliton solutions of the Nicole model - a non-linear four-dimensional field theory consisting of the CP^1 Lagrangian density to the non-integer power 3/2 - using an ansatz within toroidal coordinates, which is indicated by the conformal symmetry of the static equations of motion. We calculate the soliton energies numerically and find that they grow linearly with the topological charge (Hopf index). Further we prove this behaviour to hold exactly for the ansatz. On the other hand, for the full three-dimensional system without symmetry reduction we prove a sub-linear upper bound, analogously to the case of the Faddeev-Niemi model. It follows that symmetric solitons cannot be true minimizers of the energy for sufficiently large Hopf index, again in analogy to the Faddeev-Niemi model.

Integrability from an abelian subgroup of the diffeomorphism group

It has been known for some time that for a large class of non-linear field theories in Minkowski space with two-dimensional target space the complex eikonal equation defines integrable submodels with infinitely many conservation laws. These conservation laws are related to the area-preserving diffeomorphisms on target space. Here we demonstrate that for all these theories there exists, in fact, a weaker integrability condition which again defines submodels with infinitely many conservation laws. These conservation laws will be related to an abelian subgroup of the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms. As this weaker integrability condition is much easier to fulfil, it should be useful in the study of those non-linear field theories.

Generalized Eikonal Knots and New Integrable Dynamical Systems

A new class of non-linear O(3) models is introduced. It is shown that these systems lead to integrable submodels if an additional integrability condition (so called the generalized eikonal equation) is imposed. In the case of particular members of the family of the models the exact solutions describing toroidal solitons with a non-trivial value of the Hopf index are obtained. Moreover, the generalized eikonal equation is analyzed in detail. Topological solutions describing torus knots are presented. Multi-knot configurations are found as well.

Knots, Braids and Hedgehogs from the Eikonal Equation

The complex eikonal equation in the three space dimensions is considered. We show that apart from the recently found torus knots this equation can also generate other topological configurations with a non-trivial value of the $π_2(S^2)$ index: braided open strings as well as hedgehogs. In particular, cylindric strings i.e. string solutions located on a cylinder with a constant radius are found. Moreover, solutions describing strings lying on an arbitrary surface topologically equivalent to cylinder are presented. We discus them in the context of the eikonal knots. The physical importance of the results originates in the fact that the eikonal knots have been recently used to approximate the Faddeev-Niemi hopfions.

Knotted Configurations with Arbitrary Hopf Index from the Eikonal Equation

The complex eikonal equation in $(3+1)$ dimensions is investigated. It is shown that this equation generates many multi soliton configurations with arbitrary value of the Hopf index. In general, these eikonal hopfions do not have the toroidal symmetry. For example, a hopfion with topology of the trefoil knot is found. Moreover, we argue that such solitons might be helpful in construction of approximated analytical knotted solutions of the Faddeev-Niemi model.

Toroidal Solitons in Nicole-type Models

A family of modified Nicole models is introduced. We show that for particular members of the family a topological soliton with a non-trivial value of the Hopf index exists. The form of the solitons as well as their energy and topological charge is explicitly found. They appear to be identical as the so-called eikonal knots. The relation between energy and topological charge of the solution is also presented. Quite interesting it seems to differ drastically from the standard Vakulenko-Kapitansky formula.

Nested Multi-Soliton Solutions with Arbitrary Hopf Index

Generalized Aratyn-Ferreira-Zimerman O(3) nonlinear sigma model with a particular symmetry breaking term, so-called dielectric function, is discussed. Static multi-soliton configurations with finite energy and nontrivial Hopf index are found. We show that such configurations consist of nested toroidal solitons. Moreover, nontrivial sphaleron-like solutions i.e. configurations with zero total topological charge are also presented.

Toroidal Soliton Solutions in O(3)^N Nonlinear Sigma Model

A set of N three component unit scalar fields in (3+1) Minkowski space-time is investigated. The highly nonlinear coupling between them is chosen to omit the scaling instabilities. The multi-soliton static configurations with arbitrary Hopf numbers are found. Moreover, the generalized version of the Vakulenko-Kapitansky inequality is obtained. The possibility of attractive, repulsing and noninteracting channels is discussed.

Integrability and Hopf Solitons in Models with Explicitly Broken O(3) Symmetry

A wide class of models, built of the three component unit vector field living in the (3+1) Minkowski space-time, which break explicitly global O(3) symmetry are discussed. The symmetry breaking occurs due to the so-called dielectric function multiplying a standard symmetric term. Integrability conditions are found. Moreover, for some particular forms of the Lagrangian exact toroidal solutions with any Hopf index are obtained. It is proved that such symmetry breaking influences the shape of the solitons whereas the energy as well as the Hopf index remain unchanged.

Non-abelian color dielectric - towards the effective model of the low energy QCD

Lattice motivated triplet color scalar field theory is analyzed. We consider non-minimal as well as covariant derivative coupling with SU(2) gauge fields. Field configurations generated by external electric sources are presented. Moreover non-Abelian magnetic monopoles are found. Dependence on the spatial coordinates in the obtained solutions is identical as in the usual Abelian case. We show also that after a decomposition of the fields a modified Faddeev-Niemi action can be obtained. It contains explicit O(3) symmetry breaking term parameterized by the condensate of an isoscalar field. Due to that Goldstone bosons observed in the original Faddeev-Niemi model are removed.

Color dielectric model with two scalar fields

SU(2) Yang-Mills theory coupled in a non-minimal way to two scalar fields is discussed. For the massless scalar fields a family of finite energy solutions generated by an external, static electric charge is found. Additionally, there is a single solution which can be interpreted as confining one. Similar solutions have been obtained in the magnetic sector. In case of massive scalar fields the Coulomb problem is investigated. We find that asymptotic behavior of the fields can also, for some values of the parameter of the model, give confinement of the electric charge. Quite interesting one glueball--meson coupling gives the linear confining potential. Finally, it is shown that for one non-dynamical scalar field we derive the color dielectric generalization of the Pagels--Tomboulis model.

On (2+1) Dimensional Topologically Massive Non-linear Electrodynamics

The (2+1) dimensional non-linear electrodynamics, the so called Pagels--Tomboulis electrodynamics, with the Chern--Simons term is considered. We obtain "generalized self--dual equation" and find the corresponding generalized massive Chern--Simons Lagrangian. Similar results for (2+1) massive dilaton electrodynamics have been obtained.

Massive and Massless Scalar Field and Confinement

Generalization of QCD motivated classical SU(2) Yang--Mills theory coupled to the scalar field is discussed. The massive scalar field, corresponding the scalar glueball, provides a confining potential for static, point-like, external sources. In case of massless scalar field screening solutions are found. However, there is a confining sector as well. Both, massive and massless confining solutions are compared with phenomenological potentials. The case of non-dynamical permittivity is also discussed.
