$N^{\bf *}$ decays to $Nω$ from new data on $γp\to ωp$

Data on the reaction $γp\to ωp$ with $ω\toπ^0γ$, taken with unpolarized or polarized beams in combination with an unpolarized or polarized proton-target, were analyzed within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis. Differential cross sections, several spin density matrix elements, the beam asymmetry $Σ$, the normalized helicity difference $E$, and the correlation $G$ between linear photon and longitudinal target polarization were included in a large data base on pion and photo-induced reactions. The data on $ω$ photoproduction are used to determine twelve $N^*\to Nω$ branching ratios; most of these are determined for the first time.

High statistics study of the reaction $γp\to p\;2π^0$

The photoproduction of 2$π^0$ mesons off protons was studied with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The energy of photons produced in a radiator was tagged in the energy range from 600\,MeV to 2.5\,GeV. Differential and total cross sections and $pπ^0π^0$ Dalitz plots are presented. Part of the data was taken with a diamond radiator producing linearly polarized photons, and beam asymmetries were derived. Properties of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances contributing to the $pπ^0π^0$ final state were determined within the BnGa partial wave analysis. The data presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances for their decays into $pπ^0π^0$ via several intermediate states. Most prominent are decays proceeding via $Δ(1232)π$, $N(1440)1/2^+π$, $N(1520)3/2^-π$, $N(1680)5/2^+π$, but also $pf_0(500)$, $pf_0(980)$, and $pf_2(1270)$ contribute to the reaction.

Measurement of double polarisation asymmetries in $ω$-photoproduction

The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries $E$ and $G$ in the photoproduction of $ω$-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. $E$ ($G$) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. $E$ was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold ($E_γ= 1108$~MeV) to $E_γ= 2300$~MeV and $G$ at a single energy interval of $1108 < E_γ<1300$~MeV. Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables $E$ and $G$ are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with $E$ acting as a helicity filter in the $s$-channel. The new results indicate significant $s$-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from $t$-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+$, and $3/2^-$.

Photoproduction of ω Mesons off the Proton

The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $γp\to pω$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $ω$ meson, $ω\toπ^0γ$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements. These data were included in the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to $ω$ photoproduction near threshold was found to be the $3/2^+$ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas $π$-exchange remained small. These $t$-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly.

The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on $γp \to pπ^0$ multipoles

Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γp\to pπ^0$ are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction.

The N(1520) 3/2- helicity amplitudes from an energy-independent multipole analysis based on new polarization data on photoproduction of neutral pions

New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γp \to pπ^0$ are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses.

Experimental constraints on the $ω$-nucleus real potential

In a search for $ω$ mesic states, the production of $ω$-mesons in coincidence with forward going protons has been studied in photon induced reactions on $^{12}$C for incident photon energies of 1250 - 3100 MeV. The $π^0 γ$ pairs from decays of bound or quasi-free $ω$-mesons have been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system in coincidence with protons registered in the MiniTAPS forward array. Structures in the total energy distribution of the $π^0 γ$ pairs, which would indicate the population and decay of bound $ω~^{11}$B states, are not observed. The $π^0 γ$ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the $ω$-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part $V_0$ of the $ω~^{11}$B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with $V_0(ρ=ρ_0) = -15\pm$ 35(stat) $\pm$20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV.

First measurement of the helicity asymmetry for $γp\rightarrow pπ^0$ in the resonance region

The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies from 600 to 2300\,MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several resonances are reported.

Determination of the η'-nucleus optical potential

The excitation function and momentum distribution of $η^\prime$ mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on $^{12}{}$C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the $η^\prime$-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -($37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)$) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the $η^\prime$-nucleus potential of -($10\pm2.5$) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved $η^\prime$-bound states appears promising.

Well-established nucleon resonances revisited by double-polarization measurements

The first measurement is reported of the double-polarization observable G in photoproduction of neutral pions off protons, covering the photon energy range from 620 to 1120 MeV and the full solid angle. G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. The observable is highly sensitive to contributions from baryon resonances. The new results are compared to the predictions from SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. In spite of the long-lasting efforts to understand γp -> pπ 0 as the simplest photoproduction reaction, surprisingly large differences between the new data and the latest predictions are observed which are traced to different contributions of the N (1535) with spin-parity J^P = 1/2^- and N (1520) with J^P = 3/2^- . In the third resonance region, where N (1680) with J^P = 5/2^+ production dominates, the new data are reasonably close to the predictions.

Photoproduction of Neutral Pions off Protons

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector in the reaction $γp\to pπ^0$ for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.50 GeV. The $π^0$ mesons are observed in their dominant neutral decay mode: $π^0\toγγ$. For the first time, the differential cross sections cover the very forward region, $θ_{\rm c.m.}<60^\circ$. A partial-wave analysis of these data within the Bonn-Gatchina framework observes the high-mass resonances $G_{17}$(2190), $D_{13}$(2080), and $D_{15}$(2070).

Streamlined Calibrations of the ATLAS Precision Muon Chambers for Initial LHC Running

The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer is designed to measure the momentum of muons with a resolution of dp/p = 3% and 10% at 100 GeV and 1 TeV momentum respectively. For this task, the spectrometer employs 355,000 Monitored Drift Tubes (MDTs) arrayed in 1200 Chambers. Calibration (RT) functions convert drift time measurements into tube-centered impact parameters for track segment reconstruction. RT functions depend on MDT environmental parameters and so must be appropriately calibrated for local chamber conditions. We report on the creation and application of a gas monitor system based calibration program for muon track reconstruction in the LHC startup phase.

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry $Σ$ in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~$Σ$ has been extracted for $115^\circ < θ_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ$ of the $π^0$~meson and for $θ_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ$. The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by covering the very forward region, extend previously published data for the same reaction by our collaboration. The angular dependence of $Σ$ shows overall good agreement with the SAID parameterization.

TSDS: high-performance merge, subset, and filter software for time series-like data

Time Series Data Server (TSDS) is a software package for implementing a server that provides fast super-setting, sub-setting, filtering, and uniform gridding of time series-like data. TSDS was developed to respond quickly to requests for long time spans of data. Data may be served from a fast database, typically created by aggregating granules (e.g., data files) from a remote data source and storing them in a local cache that is optimized for serving time series. The system was designed specifically for time series data, and is optimized for requests where the longest dimension of the requested data structure is time. Scalar, vector, and spectrogram time series types are supported. The user can interact with the server by requesting a time series, a date range, and an optional filter to apply to the data. Available filters include strides, block average/minimum/maximum, exclude, and inequality. Constraint expressions are supported, which allow such operations as a request for data from one time series when a different time series satisfied a specified relationship. TSDS builds upon DAP (Data Access Protocol), NcML (netCDF Mark-up language) and related software libraries. In this work, we describe the current design of this server, as well as planned features and potential implementation strategies.

Photoproduction of $η$ and $η\prime$ Mesons off Protons

Total and differential cross sections for $η$ and $η^\prime$ photoproduction off the proton have been determined with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.55 GeV. The $η$ mesons are detected in their two neutral decay modes, $η\toγγ$ and $η\to 3π^0\to 6γ$, and for the first time, cover the full angular range in $\rm cos θ_{cm}$ of the $η$ meson. These new $η$ photoproduction data are consistent with the earlier CB-ELSA results. The $η^\prime$ mesons are observed in their neutral decay to $π^0π^0η\to 6γ$ and also extend the coverage in angular range.

Radio monitoring of NGC 7469: Late time radio evolution of SN 2000ft and the circumnuclear starburst in NGC 7469

We present the results of an eight-year long monitoring of the radio emission from the Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469, using 8.4 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 0.3'' resolution. Our monitoring shows that the late time evolution of the radio supernova SN 2000ft follows a decline very similar to that displayed at earlier times of its optically thin phase. The late time radio emission of SN 2000ft is therefore still being powered by its interaction with the presupernova stellar wind, and not with the interstellar medium (ISM). Indeed, the ram pressure of the presupernova wind is ρ_w v_w^2 \approx 7.6E-9 dyn/cm^2, at a supernova age of approximately 2127 days, which is significantly larger than the expected pressure of the ISM around SN 2000ft. At this age, the SN shock has reached a distance r_{sh \approx 0.06 pc, and our observations are probing the interaction of the SN with dense material that was ejected by the presupernova star about 5820 years prior to its explosion. From our VLA monitoring, we estimate that the swept-up mass by the supernova shock after about six years of expansion is \approx 0.29 M_sun, assuming an average expansion speed of the supernova of 10000 km/s. We also searched for recently exploded core-collapse supernovae in our VLA images. Apart from SN 2000ft (S_ν\approx 1760 microJy at its peak, corresponding to 1.1E28 erg/s/Hz, we found no evidence for any other radio supernova (RSN) more luminous than \approx 6.0E26 erg/s/Hz, which suggests that no other Type IIn SN has exploded since 2000 in the circumnuclear starburst of NGC 7469.

Radio Detection of Supernova 2004ip in the Circumnuclear Region of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 18293-3413

We report a radio detection of supernova SN 2004ip in the circumnuclear region of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 18293-3413, using Very Large Array (VLA) observations at 8.4 GHz on 11 June 2007. SN 2004ip had been previously discovered at near-infrared wavelengths using adaptive optics observations, but its nature (core-collapse or thermonuclear) could not be definitely established. Our radio detection, about three years after the explosion of the supernova, indicates a prominent interaction of the ejecta of SN 2004ip with the circumstellar medium, confirming that the supernova was a core-collapse event (probably Type II), and thus strongly suggesting that its progenitor was a massive star with a significant mass-loss prior to its explosion. SN 2004ip has a 8.4 GHz luminosity of 3.5E27 erg/s/Hz, about twice as bright as SN 2000ft in NGC 7469 at a similar age, and given its projected distance to the nucleus (~500 pc), is one of the closest of all known radio SNe to a galaxy nucleus, and one of the brightest radio SNe ever.
