Topological phases in Bi/Sb planar and buckled honeycomb monolayers

We investigate topological phases in two-dimensional Bi/Sb honeycomb crystals considering planar, buckled, freestanding and deposited on a substrate structures. We use the multi-orbital tight-binding model and compare results with density functional theory methods. We distinguish topological phases by calculating topological invariants, analyze edge states of systems in a ribbon geometry and by looking at their entanglement spectra. We show that weak coupling to the substrate of buckled and planar crystals is sufficient to lead to a transition to the $Z_2$ topological insulator phase. Topological crystalline insulator (TCI) phase exhibits a pair of edge states in the semi-infinite geometry and in the entanglement spectrum. Transport calculations for TCI phases show robust quantized conductance even in a presence of symmetry-breaking disorder.

The enigma of the $ν=2+\frac{3}{8}$ fractional quantum Hall effect

The fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=2+3/8$, which has been definitively observed, is one of the last fractions for which no viable explanation has so far been demonstrated. Our detailed study suggests that it belongs to a new class of of exotic states described by the Bonderson-Slingerland wave function. Its excitations are non-Abelian anyons similar to those of the well studied Pfaffian state at 5/2, but its wave function has a more complex structure. Using the effective edge theory, we make predictions for various measurable quantities that should enable a confirmation of the underlying topological order of this state.

Energy spectrum of confined positively charged excitons in single quantum dots

A theoretical model, which relates the binding energy of a positively charged exciton in a quantum dot with the confinement energy is presented. It is shown that the binding energy, defined as the energy difference between the corresponding charged and neutral complexes confined on the same excitonic shell strongly depends on the shell index. Moreover, it is shown that the ratio of the binding energy for positively charged excitons from the $p$- and $s$-shells of a dot depends mainly on the nearly perfect confinement in the dot, which is due to the "hidden symmetry" of the multi-electron-hole system. We applied the theory to the excitons confined to a single GaAlAs/AlAs quantum dots. The relevant binding energy was determined using the micro-photoluminescence and micro-photoluminescence excitation magneto-spectroscopy. We show that within our theory, the confinement energy determined using the ratio of the binding energy corresponds well to the actual confinement energy of the investigated dot.

Disorder induced loss of magnetization in Lieb's graphene quantum dots

The stability of the magnetization in Lieb graphene quantum dots (GQD) against disorder is studied. Such systems exhibit the degenerate shell of edge states in the middle of the energy gap occupied by spin polarized electrons. Disorder affects the energy spectrum and leads to the removal of the degeneracy, and in a consequence the loss of the magnetization. We find that there is a critical value of disorder strength over which the magnetization starts dropping. We first consider GQDs with different shapes and edge termination and compare the effect of bulk and edge disorder. We find that bulk disorder influences the energy spectrum far away from the Fermi level while edge disorder affects states in the vicinity of it. We next focus on Lieb GQDs with a single zigzag edge. The stability of the ferromagnetic order against disorder strength is analyzed for structures with a different edge length. The probability of getting maximal spin polarization is determined.

Cyclotron-resonant exciton transfer between the nearly free and strongly localized radiative states of a two-dimensional hole gas in a high magnetic field

Avoided crossing of the emission lines of a nearly free positive trion and a cyclotron replica of an exciton bound to an interface acceptor has been observed in the magneto-photoluminescence spectra of p-doped GaAs quantum wells. Identification of the localized state depended on the precise mapping of the anti-crossing pattern. The underlying coupling is caused by an exciton transfer combined with a resonant cyclotron excitation of an additional hole. The emission spectrum of the resulting magnetically tunable coherent state probes weak localization in the quantum well.

Electronic properties of gated triangular graphene quantum dots: Magnetism, correlations, and geometrical effects

We present a theory of electronic properties of gated triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges as a function of size and carrier density. We focus on electronic correlations, spin and geometrical effects using a combination of atomistic tight-binding, Hartree-Fock and configuration interaction methods (TB+HF+CI) including long range Coulomb interactions. The single particle energy spectrum of triangular dots with zigzag edges exhibits a degenerate shell at the Fermi level with a degeneracy N_{edge} proportional to the edge size. We determine the effect of the electron-electron interactions on the ground state, the total spin and the excitation spectrum as a function of a shell filling and the degeneracy of the shell using TB+HF+CI for N_{edge} < 12 and approximate CI method for N_{edge}\geq 12. For a half-filled neutral shell we find spin polarized ground state for structures up to N=500 atoms in agreement with previous {\it ab initio} and mean-field calculations, and in agreement with Lieb's theorem for a Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice. Adding a single electron leads to the complete spin depolarization for N_{edge}\leq 9. For larger structures, the spin depolarization is shown to occur at different filling factors. Away from half-fillings excess electrons(holes) are shown to form Wigner-like spin polarized triangular molecules corresponding to large gaps in the excitation spectrum. The validity of conclusions is assessed by a comparison of results obtained from different levels of approximations. While for the charge neutral system all methods give qualitatively similar results, away from the charge neutrality an inclusion of all Coulomb scattering terms is necessary to produce results presented here.

Integral and fractional Quantum Hall Ising ferromagnets

We compare quantum Hall systems at filling factor 2 to those at filling factors 2/3 and 2/5, corresponding to the exact filling of two lowest electron or composite fermion (CF) Landau levels. The two fractional states are examples of CF liquids with spin dynamics. There is a close analogy between the ferromagnetic (spin polarization P=1) and paramagnetic (P=0) incompressible ground states that occur in all three systems in the limits of large and small Zeeman spin splitting. However, the excitation spectra are different. At filling factor 2, we find spin domains at half-polarization (P=1/2), while antiferromagnetic order seems most favorable in the CF systems. The transition between P=0 and 1, as seen when e.g. the magnetic field is tilted, is also studied by exact diagonalization in toroidal and spherical geometries. The essential role of an effective CF-CF interaction is discussed, and the experimentally observed incompresible half-polarized state is found in some models.

Transport gap in a nu=1/3 quantum Hall system: a probe for skyrmions

The dependence of the activated gap on magnetic field is studied for the fractional filling factor~1/3. By comparing the experimental results with results from exact diagonalization calculations we are able to identify the excitation of a small antiskyrmion in the low-field regime and a cross-over to spinless excitations at higher magnetic fields. The effect of sample quality is studied. On the side of the theory, comparison between different geometries (torus and sphere) and different sizes is carried out. Under inclusion of Landau level mixing and finite thickness, we obtain a good agreement between calculated energies and experimental results.

Spin-orbit interaction in the quantum dot

The electronic states of a parabolic quantum dot in a magnetic field are studied with the inclusion of the spin-orbit interaction. The analitycal formulae for the ground state energy of the interacting system are derived. The spin-orbit interaction is shown to introduce new features to the far infra-red absorption spectrum, where it leads to the splitting of the two principal modes. The results are compared with the charging experiments by Ashoori et al. and the far infra-red absorption measurements by Demel et al.
