Extreme Terahertz Magnon Multiplication Induced by Resonant Magnetic Pulse Pairs

Nonlinear interactions of spin-waves and their quanta, magnons, have emerged as prominent candidates for interference-based technology, ranging from quantum transduction to antiferromagnetic spintronics. Yet magnon multiplication in the terahertz (THz) spectral region represents a major challenge. Intense, resonant magnetic fields from THz pulse-pairs with controllable phases and amplitudes enable high order THz magnon multiplication, distinct from non-resonant nonlinearities such as the high harmonic generation by below-band gap electric fields. Here, we demonstrate exceptionally high-order THz nonlinear magnonics. It manifests as 7$^\text{th}$-order spin-wave-mixing and 6$^\text{th}$ harmonic magnon generation in an antiferromagnetic orthoferrite. We use THz multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy to achieve high-sensitivity detection of nonlinear magnon interactions up to six-magnon quanta in strongly-driven many-magnon correlated states. The high-order magnon multiplication, supported by classical and quantum spin simulations, elucidates the significance of four-fold magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya symmetry breaking. Moreover, our results shed light on the potential quantum fluctuation properties inherent in nonlinear magnons.

Magnetic phase diagram of HoFeO$_3$ by neutron diffraction

Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO$_3$ single crystal were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic field, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange and isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattice and inside Fe sublattice provides a rich phase diagram. As the result of the balance of exchange interactions inside crystal and external magnetic field we found 8 different magnetic phases, produced or suppressed by the field.

Aqua MODIS Electronic Crosstalk on SMWIR Bands 20 to 26

Aqua MODIS Moon images obtained with bands 20 to 26 (3.66 - 4.55 and 1.36 - 1.39 $μ$m) during scheduled lunar events show evidence of electronic crosstalk contamination of the response of detector 1. In this work, we determined the sending bands for each receiving band. We found that the contaminating signal originates, in all cases, from the detector 10 of the corresponding sending band and that the signals registered by the receiving and sending detectors are always read out in immediate sequence. We used the lunar images to derive the crosstalk coefficients, which were then applied in the correction of electronic crosstalk striping artifacts present in L1B images, successfully restoring product quality.

Inverse magneto-refraction as a mechanism for laser modification of spin-spin exchange parameters and subsequent terahertz emission from iron oxides

Ultrafast non-thermal manipulation of magnetization by light relies on either indirect coupling of the electric field component of the light with spins via spin-orbit interaction or direct coupling between the magnetic field component and spins. Here we propose a novel scenario for coupling between the electric field of light and spins via optical modification of the exchange interaction, one of the strongest quantum effects, the strength of which can reach 1000 Tesla. We demonstrate that this isotropic opto-magnetic effect, which can be called the inverse magneto-refraction, is allowed in a material of any symmetry. Its existence is corroborated by the experimental observation of THz emission by magnetic-dipole active spin resonances optically excited in a broad class of iron oxides with a canted spin configuration. From its strength we estimate that a sub-picosecond laser pulse with a moderate fluence of ~ 1 mJ/cm^2 acts as a pulsed effective magnetic field of 0.01 Tesla, arising from the optically perturbed balance between the exchange parameters. Our findings are supported by a low-energy theory for the microscopic magnetic interactions between non-equilibrium electrons subjected to an optical field which suggests a possibility to modify the exchange interactions by light over 1 %.
