Electric microfield distributions in electron-ion plasmas

The low-frequency electric microfield distribution in a Coulomb plasma is calculated for various plasma parameters, from weak to strong Coulomb coupling and from zero to strong electron screening. Two methods of numerical calculations are employed: the adjustable-parameter exponential approximation and the Monte Carlo simulation. The results are represented by analytic fitting formulas suitable for applications.

Thermodynamic functions of harmonic Coulomb crystals

Phonon frequency moments and thermodynamic functions (electrostatic and vibrational parts of the free energy, internal energy, and heat capacity) are calculated for bcc and fcc Coulomb crystals in the harmonic approximation with a fractional accuracy within one part on 10^5. Temperature dependence of thermodynamic functions is fitted by analytic formulas with an accuracy of a few parts in 10^5. The static-lattice (Madelung) part of the free energy is calculated with an accuracy about 10^{-12}. The Madelung constant and frequency moments of hcp crystals are also computed.

Thermal structure and cooling of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes

The thermal structure of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes is studied using modern physics input. The relation between the internal (T_i) and local surface temperatures is calculated and fitted by analytic expressions for magnetic field strengths B from 0 to 10^{16} G and arbitrary inclination of the field lines to the surface. The luminosity of a neutron star with dipole magnetic field is calculated and fitted as a function of B, T_i, stellar mass and radius. In addition, we simulate cooling of neutron stars with magnetized envelopes. In particular, we analyse ultramagnetized envelopes of magnetars and also the effects of the magnetic field of the Vela pulsar on the determination of critical temperatures of neutron and proton superfluids in its core.

Hydrogen atom in a magnetic field: The quadrupole moment

The quadrupole moment of a hydrogen atom in a magnetic field for field strengths from 0 to 4.414e13 G is calculated by two different methods. The first method is variational, and based on a single trial function. The second method deals with a solution of the Schroedinger equation in the form of a linear combination of Landau orbitals.

Neutron star envelopes and thermal radiation from the magnetic surface

The thermal structure of neutron star envelopes is discussed with emphasis on analytic results. Recent progress on the effect of chemical constitution and high magnetic fields on the opacities and the thermal structure is further reviewed in view of the application to pulsar cooling and magnetars.

Strongly coupled Coulomb and nuclear plasma in inner crusts of neutron stars

Matter of subnuclear density in the inner crusts of neutron stars consists of neutron-rich atomic nuclei immersed in strongly degenerate relativistic gas of electrons and strongly nonideal liquid of neutrons. We give a brief account of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of this matter which are greatly affected by Coulomb and nuclear interactions (a companion paper on the outer envelopes is astro-ph/0012316) and show how they can be studied from observations of thermal radiation of young (age < 100 yr) neutron stars (for a discussion of the latter possibility, see astro-ph/0012306).

Coulomb plasmas in outer envelopes of neutron stars

Outer envelopes of neutron stars consist mostly of fully ionized, strongly coupled Coulomb plasmas characterized by typical densities about 10^4-10^{11} g/cc and temperatures about 10^4-10^9 K. Many neutron stars possess magnetic fields about 10^{11}-10^{14} G. Here we briefly review recent theoretical advances which allow one to calculate thermodynamic functions and electron transport coefficients for such plasmas with an accuracy required for theoretical interpretation of observations.

Puzzle of the constancy of fundamental constants

We discuss experiments and observations aimed at testing the possible space-time variability of fundamental physical constants, predicted by the modern theory. Specifically, we consider two of the dimensionless physical parameters which are important for atomic and molecular physics: the fine-structure constant and the electron-to-proton mass ratio. We review the current status of such experiments and critically analyze recent claims of a detection of the variability of the fine-structure constant on the cosmological time scale. We stress that such a detection remains to be checked by future experiments and observations. The tightest of the firmly established upper limits read that the considered constants could not vary by more than 0.015% on the scale of 10 Gigayears.

Testing cosmological variability of fundamental constants

One of the topical problems of contemporary physics is a possible variability of the fundamental constants. Here we consider possible variability of two dimensionless constants which are most important for calculation of atomic and molecular spectra (in particular, the X-ray ones): the fine-structure constant α=e^2/\hbar c and the proton-to-electron mass ratio μ=m_p/m_e. Values of the physical constants in the early epochs are estimated directly from observations of quasars - the most powerful sources of radiation, whose spectra were formed when the Universe was several times younger than now. A critical analysis of the available results leads to the conclusion that present-day data do not reveal any statistically significant evidence for variations of the fundamental constants under study. The most reliable upper limits to possible variation rates at the 95% confidence level, obtained in our work, read: |\dotα/α| < (1.4e-14)/yr, |\dotμ/μ| < (1.5e-14)/yr on the average over the last ten billion years.

Electron conduction in magnetized neutron star envelopes

Practical expressions are derived for evaluation of electrical and thermal conductivities and thermopower of degenerate electrons in the outer envelopes of neutron stars with magnetic fields. All tensor components of the kinetic coefficients are calculated (those related to conduction along and across magnetic field and to the Hall currents). The kinetic coefficients are presented as energy averages of expressions containing energy dependent effective relaxation times of two types, associated either with longitudinal or with transverse currents. The calculation is based on the effective scattering potential proposed in the previous paper (astro-ph/9903127), which describes the electron-ion and electron-phonon scattering, taking into account correlation effects in strongly coupled Coulomb liquid and multi-phonon scattering in Coulomb crystal, respectively. Analytic fitting formulae are devised for the effective relaxation times at arbitrary field strength. Basing on these results, we calculate the transport coefficients at various temperatures, densities, and magnetic fields pertinent to the neutron star envelopes.

Transport properties of degenerate electrons in neutron star envelopes and white dwarf cores

New calculations of the thermal and electrical electron conductivities are performed for a broad range of physical parameters typical for envelopes of neutron stars and cores of white dwarfs. We consider stellar matter composed of astrophysically important chemical elements from H to Fe in the density range from 10^2-10^4 g/ccm up to 10^7-10^{10} g/ccm, where atoms are fully ionized and electrons are strongly degenerate. We have used modified ion structure factors suggested in physics/9811052. In the ion liquid, these modifications take into account, in an approximate way, instantaneous electron-band structures that reduce the electron-ion scattering rate. In crystallized matter, the new structure factors include multi-phonon processes important at temperatures not very much lower than the melting temperature T_m. The transport coefficients obtained differ significantly from those derived earlier in the important temperature range T_m/5 < T < 5 T_m. The results of our numerical calculations are fitted by analytical expressions convenient for astrophysical applications.

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by electrons in neutron star crusts

Neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung by relativistic degenerate electrons in a neutron-star crust at densities (10^9 - 1.5x10^{14}) g/cm^3 is analyzed. The processes taken into account are neutrino emission due to Coulomb scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei in a Coulomb liquid, and electron-phonon scattering and Bragg diffraction (the static-lattice contribution) in a Coulomb crystal. The static-lattice contribution is calculated including the electron band-structure effects for cubic Coulomb crystals of different types and also for the liquid crystal phases composed of rod- and plate-like nuclei in the neutron-star mantle (at 10^{14} - 1.5x10^{14} g/cm^3). The phonon contribution is evaluated with proper treatment of the multi-phonon processes which removes a jump in the neutrino bremsstrahlung emissivity at the melting point obtained in previous works. Below 10^{13} g/cm^3, the results are rather insensitive to the nuclear form factor, but results for the solid state near the melting point are affected significantly by the Debye-Waller factor and multi-phonon processes. At higher densities, the nuclear form factor becomes more significant. A comparison of the various neutrino generation mechanisms in neutron star crusts shows that electron bremsstrahlung is among the most important ones.

Ionization equilibrium and equation of state of hydrogen plasmas in strong magnetic fields

We study hydrogen plasmas at magnetic fields B ~ 10^{12}-10^{13} Gauss, densities ~ 10^{-3}-10^3 g/cc and temperatures T ~ 10^{5.5}-10^{6.5} K, typical of photospheres of middle-aged cooling neutron stars. We construct an analytical free energy model of the partially ionized plasma, including into consideration the decentred atomic states, which arise due to the thermal motion across the strong field. We show that these states, neglected in previous studies, may contribute appreciably into thermodynamics of the outer atmospheric layers at density below 1 g/cc and typical B and T. We take into account Coulomb non-ideality of the ionized component of the plasma affected by intense magnetic field. Ionization degree, occupancies and equation of state are calculated, and their dependences on the temperature, density and magnetic field are studied.

Ion structure factors and electron transport in dense Coulomb plasmas

The dynamical structure factor of a Coulomb crystal of ions is calculated at arbitrary temperature below the melting point taking into account multi-phonon processes in the harmonic approximation. In a strongly coupled Coulomb ion liquid, the static structure factor is split into two parts, a Bragg-diffraction-like one, describing incipient long-range order structures, and an inelastic part corresponding to thermal ion density fluctuations. It is assumed that the diffractionlike scattering does not lead to the electron relaxation in the liquid phase. This assumption, together with the inclusion of multi-phonon processes in the crystalline phase, eliminates large discontinuities of the transport coefficients (jumps of the thermal and electric conductivities, as well as shear viscosity, reported previously) at a melting point.

The fine-structure constant: a new observational limit on its cosmological variation and some theoretical consequences

Endeavours of the unification of the four fundamental interactions have resulted in a development of theories having cosmological solutions in which low-energy limits of fundamental physical constants vary with time. The validity of such theoretical models should be checked by comparison of the theoretical predictions with observational and experimental bounds on possible time-dependences of the fundamental constants. Based on high-resolution measurements of quasar spectra, we obtain the following direct limits on the average rate of the cosmological time variation of the fine-structure constant α: |\dotα/α| < 1.9 \times 10^{-14} yr^{-1} is the most likely limit, and |\dotα/α| < 3.1 \times 10^{-14} yr^{-1} is the most conservative limit. Analogous estimates published previously, as well as other contemporary tests for possible variations of α(those based on the "Oklo phenomenon", on the primordial nucleosynthesis models, and others) are discussed and compared with the present upper limit. We argue that the present result is the most conservative one.

Equation of state of fully ionized electron-ion plasmas

Thermodynamic quantities of Coulomb plasmas consisting of point-like ions immersed in a compressible, polarizable electron background are calculated for ion charges Z=1 to 26 and for a wide domain of plasma parameters ranging from the Debye-Hueckel limit to the crystallization point and from the region of nondegenerate to fully degenerate nonrelativistic or relativistic electrons. The calculations are based on the linear-response theory for the electron-ion interaction, including the local-field corrections in the electronic dielectric function. The thermodynamic quantities are calculated in the framework of the N-body hypernetted-chain equations and fitted by analytic expressions. We present also accurate analytic approximations for the free energy of the ideal electron gas at arbitrary degeneracy and relativity and for the excess free energy of the one-component plasma of ions (OCP) derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The extension to multi-ionic mixtures is discussed within the framework of the linear mixing rule. These formulae provide a completely analytic, accurate description of the thermodynamic quantities of fully ionized electron-ion Coulomb plasmas, a useful tool for various applications from liquid state theory to dense stellar matter.

Testing cosmological variability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio using the spectrum of PKS 0528-250

Multidimensional cosmologies allow for variations of fundamental physical constants over the course of cosmological evolution, and different versions of the theories predict different time dependences. In particular, such variations could manifest themselves as changes of the proton-to-electron mass ratio μ=m_p/m_e over the period of ~ 10^{10} years since the moment of formation of high-redshift QSO spectra. Here we analyze a new, high-resolution spectrum of the z=2.81080 molecular hydrogen absorption system toward the quasar PKS 0528-250 to derive a new observational constraint to the time-averaged variation rate of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. We find |\dotμ / μ| < 1.5 \times 10^{-14}/year, which is much tighter than previously measured limits.
