Signed Phases and Fields Associated with Degeneracies

In the first part, expressions are given for the {\it sign} of the topological angle that is acquired upon making a loop around a degeneracy ("conical intersection") point of two molecular energy surfaces. The expressions involve the partial derivatives (with respect to the nuclear coordinates) of the matrix elements of the coupling Hamiltonian. Examples are given of a few studied cases, such as of excited states that have topological angles with a sign opposite to those in the ground states. In the second part, the two dimensional (or two parameter) situation that characterizes a conical intersection (ci) between potential surfaces in a polyatomic molecule is constructed as a limiting case of the three dimensional Dirac-monopole situation. For an electron occupying a twofold state, we obtain both the "magnetic-field" (or curl-field) and the tensorial (or Yang-Mills-) field (which is the sum of a curl and of a vector- product term). These pseudo- fields represent the reaction of the electron on the nuclear motion via the nonadiabatic coupling terms (NACTs). We find that both fields are aligned with the orthogonal, (so called) seam directions of the ci and are zero everywhere outside the seam, but they differ as regards the flux that they produce. In a two-state situation, the fields are representation dependent and the values of, e.g., the fluxes depend on the state that the electron occupies. The angular dependence of the NACTs and the fields calculated from a general linearly coupled model agrees with recently computed results for $C_2 H$ [A.M. Mebel, M. Baer and S.H. Lin, J.Chem. Phys. {\bf 115} 3673 (2001)]. An effective-Hamiltonian formalism is proposed for experimentally observing and distinguishing between the different fields.

The Open Path Phase for Degenerate and Non-degenerate Systems and its Relation to the Wave-function Modulus

We calculate the open path phase in a two state model with a slowly (nearly adiabatically) varying time-periodic Hamiltonian and trace its continuous development during a period. We show that the topological (Berry) phase attains $π$ or $2 π$ depending on whether there is or is not a degeneracy in the part of the parameter space enclosed by the trajectory. Oscillations are found in the phase. As adiabaticity is approached, these become both more frequent and less pronounced and the phase jump becomes increasingly more steep. Integral relations between the phase and the amplitude modulus (having the form of Kramers-Kronig relations, but in the time domain) are used as an alternative way to calculate open path phases. These relations attest to the observable nature of the open path phase.

Space-frequency model of amplified spontaneous emission and super-radiance in free electron laser operating in the linear and non-linear regimes

A three-dimensional, space-frequency model for the excitation of electromagnetic radiation in a free-electron laser is presented. The approach is applied in a numerical particle code WB3D, simulating the interaction of a free-electron laser operating in the linear and non-linear regimes. Solution of the electromagnetic excitation equations in the frequency domain inherently takes into account dispersive effects arising from the cavity and the gain medium. Moreover, it facilitates the consideration of statistical features of the electron beam and the excited radiation, necessary for the study of spontaneous emission, synchrotron amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), super-radiance and noise. We employ the code to study the statistical and spectral characteristics of the radiation generated in a pulsed beam free-electron laser operating in the millimeter wavelengths. The evolution of radiation spectrum, excited when a Gaussian shaped bunch with a random distribution of electrons is passing through the wiggler, was investigated.

Energy Density of a Dissipative Polarizable Solid by a Lagrangean Formalism

A Lagrangean for the dynamics of an electromagnetic field in a dispersive and dissipative material is constructed (adapting some ideas by Bekenstein and Hannay) and an expression for the energy density that is positive is obtained from it. The expression contains extra (sink) degrees of freedom that represent dissipating modes. In simplified cases the sink modes can be eliminated to yield an energy density expression in terms of the electromagnetic fields, the polarization and the magnetization only, but which contains parameters associated with the sink modes. The method of adding extra modes can be used to set up a Lagrangean formalism for dissipative systems in general, such that will reinstate time-translation invariance and will yield a unique energy density.

A Variational Procedure for Time-Dependent Processes

A simple variational Lagrangian is proposed for the time development of an arbitrary density matrix, employing the "factorization" of the density. Only the "kinetic energy" appears in the Lagrangian. The formalism applies to pure and mixed state cases, the Navier-Stokes equations of hydrodynamics, transport theory, etc. It recaptures the Least Dissipation Function condition of Rayleigh-Onsager {\bf and in practical applications is flexible}. The variational proposal is tested on a two level system interacting that is subject, in one instance, to an interaction with a single oscillator and, in another, that evolves in a dissipative mode.
