Topology meets time-reversal symmetry breaking in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ superconductor

Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) in magnetic topological insulators induces a Dirac gap in the topological surface state (TSS), leading to exotic phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Yet, the interplay between TRSB and topology in superconductors remains underexplored due to limited suitable materials. Here we employ zero-field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) as a sensitive probe of TRSB to map out the electronic phase diagrams of iron-chalcogenide superconductors FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$. For the Te composition $x=0.64$ with the highest superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}=14.5$ K, which is known to host a TSS and Majorana zero modes within vortices, we detect spontaneous magnetic fields below $T_{\rm c}$ distinct from a magnetic order. This signifies a TRSB superconducting state in the bulk, revealing the convergence of unconventional TRSB superconductivity with topologically nontrivial electronic structures in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$. Given the relatively high $T_{\rm c}$ and the tunability of the Fermi level through chemical substitution, iron-chalcogenide superconductors offer an intriguing platform for investigating the synergy between topological superconductivity and TRSB.

Estimation of Grüneisen parameter of high-entropy-alloy-type functional materials

In functional materials like thermoelectric materials and superconductors, the interplay between functionality, electronic structure, and phonon characteristics is one of the key factors to improve functionality and to understand the mechanisms. In the first part of this article, we briefly review investigations on lattice anharmonicity in functional materials by Grüneisen parameter (γG). One can find that the γG can be a good scale for large lattice anharmonicity and for detecting a change in anharmonicity amplitude in functional materials. Then, we show original results on estimation of γG for recently-developed high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) functional materials with a layered structure and a NaCl-type structure. As a common trend between those two systems with two- and three-dimensional structures, we find that γG increases by a slight increase in configurational entropy of mixing (ΔSmix), and then γG decreases with increasing ΔSmix in high-entropy region.

Superconductivity in HEA-type compounds

Since the discovery of superconductivity in a high-entropy alloy (HEA) Ti-Zr-Nb-Hf-Ta in 2014, the community of superconductor science has explored new HEA superconductors to find the merit of the HEA states on superconducting properties. Since 2018, we have developed HEA-type compounds as superconductors or thermoelectric materials. As well known, compounds like intermetallic compounds or layered compounds are composed of multi crystallographic sites. In a HEA-type compounds, one or more sites are alloyed and total mixing entropy satisfies with the criterion of HEA. Herein, we summarize the synthesis methods, the crystal structural variation and superconducting properties of the HEA-type compounds, which include NaCl-type metal tellurides, CuAl2-type transition metal zirconides, high-Tc cuprates, and BiS2-based layered superconductors. The effects of the introduction of a HEA site in various kinds of complicated compounds are discussed from the structural-dimensionality viewpoint.

Direct observation of double valence-band extrema and anisotropic effective masses of the thermoelectric material SnSe

Synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to determine the electronic structure of layered SnSe, which was recently turned out to be a potential thermoelectric material. We observe that the top of the valence band consists of two nearly independent hole bands, whose tops differ by ~20 meV in energy, indicating the necessity of a multivalley model to describe the thermoelectric properties. The estimated effective masses are anisotropic, with in-plane values of 0.16-0.39 m$_0$ and an out-of-plane value of 0.71 m$_0$, where m$_0$ is the rest electron mass. Information of the electronic structure is essential to further enhance the thermoelectric performance of hole-doped SnSe.

Upgrade of Linac Control System with New Vme Controllers at Spring-8

We integrated an injector linac control system to the SPring-8 standard system on September 2000. As a result of this integration, the SPring-8 accelerator complex was controlled by one unified system. Because the linac was continuously running as the electron beam injector not only for the SPring-8 storage ring but also for New SUBARU, we had to minimize the hardware modification to reduce the time for the development and testing of the new control system. The integration method was almost the same as that of the integration of the booster synchrotron. We report here on the integration of the linac control system with emphasis on the upgrade of the VMEbus controllers and software involving the operating system Solaris 7 as the real-time OS.

Data Acquisition System with Shared Memory Network

The SPring-8 control system provides data acquisition software called Poller/Collector for periodic data taking. Its polling scheme does not support taking data synchronized with an event, and simultaneity in the data from the different VME systems is not guaranteed. Recently, requirement for fast and event-driven data acquisition has increased, and the synchronization of a set of data from the different VME systems is requested. We added new data-taking software to the standard framework with a shared memory network. We designed the software on the VME by updating the original framework that was already used for feedback control. The data filling process on a PC stores sets of the synchronized data on a shared memory board to the database. The shared memory boards provide 250Mbit/s transmission rate and are linked with optical fiber cables. We will install the system to the linac beam position monitors data acquisition as the first application.

A Compact Beam Stop for a Rare Kaon Decay Experiment

We describe the development and testing of a novel beam stop for use in a rare kaon decay experiment at the Brookhaven AGS. The beam stop is located inside a dipole spectrometer magnet in close proximity to straw drift chambers and intercepts a high-intensity neutral hadron beam. The design process, involving both Monte Carlo simulations and beam tests of alternative beam-stop shielding arrangements, had the goal of minimizing the leakage of particles from the beam stop and the resulting hit rates in detectors, while preserving maximum acceptance for events of interest. The beam tests consisted of measurements of rates in drift chambers, scintilation counter hodoscopes, a gas threshold Cherenkov counter, and a lead glass array. Measurements were also made with a set of specialized detectors which were sensitive to low-energy neutrons, photons, and charged particles. Comparisons are made between these measurements and a detailed Monte Carlo simulation.
