scikit-package -- software packaging standards and roadmap for sharing reproducible scientific software

Scientific advancement relies on the ability to share and reproduce results. When data analysis or calculations are carried out using software written by scientists there are special challenges around code versions, quality and code sharing. scikit-package provides a roadmap to facilitate code reuse and sharing with minimal effort through tutorials coupled with automated and centralized reusable workflows. The goal of the project is to provide pedagogical and practical tools for scientists who are not professionally trained software engineers to write more reusable and maintainable software code. Code reuse can occur at multiple levels of complexity-from turning a code block into a function within a single script, to publishing a publicly installable, fully tested, and documented software package scikit-package provides a community maintained set of tools, and a roadmap, to help scientists bring their software higher levels of reproducibility and shareability.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey. VII. Supernova remnants in the Galactic longitude range $28^\circ<l<36^\circ$

Context. While over 1000 supernova remnants (SNRs) are estimated to exist in the Milky Way, only less than 400 have been found to date. In the context of this apparent deficiency, more than 150 SNR candidates were recently identified in the D-configuration Very Large Array (VLA-D) continuum images of the 4--8 GHz global view on star formation (GLOSTAR) survey, in the Galactic longitude range $-2^\circ<l<60^\circ$. Aims. We attempt to find evidence of nonthermal synchrotron emission from 35 SNR candidates in the region of Galactic longitude range $28^\circ<l<36^\circ$, and also to study the radio continuum emission from the previously confirmed SNRs in this region. Methods. Using the short-spacing corrected GLOSTAR VLA-D+Effelsberg images, we measure ${\sim}6$ GHz total and linearly polarized flux densities of the SNR candidates and the SNRs that were previously confirmed. We also attempt to determine the spectral indices by measuring flux densities from complementary Galactic plane surveys and from the temperature-temperature plots of the GLOSTAR-Effelsberg images. Results. We provide evidence of nonthermal emission from four candidates that have spectral indices and polarization consistent with a SNR origin, and, considering their morphology, we are confident that three of these (G28.36+0.21, G28.78-0.44, and G29.38+0.10) are indeed SNRs. However, about $25\%$ of the candidates have spectral index measurements that indicate thermal emission, and the rest of them are too faint to have a good constraint on the spectral index yet. Conclusions. Additional observations at longer wavelengths and higher sensitivities will shed more light on the nature of these candidates. A simple Monte-Carlo simulation reiterates the view that future studies must persist with the current strategy of searching for SNRs with small angular size to solve the problem of the Milky Way's missing SNRs.

Immersive Operation of a Semi-Autonomous Aerial Platform for Detecting and Mapping Radiation

Recent advancements in radiation detection and computer vision have enabled small unmanned aerial systems (sUASs) to produce 3D nuclear radiation maps in real-time. Currently these state-of-the-art systems still require two operators: one to pilot the sUAS and another operator to monitor the detected radiation. In this work we present a system that integrates real-time 3D radiation visualization with semi-autonomous sUAS control. Our Virtual Reality interface enables a single operator to define trajectories using waypoints to abstract complex flight control and utilize the semi-autonomous maneuvering capabilities of the sUAS. The interface also displays a fused radiation visualization and environment map, thereby enabling simultaneous remote operation and radiation monitoring by a single operator. This serves as the basis for development of a single system that deploys and autonomously controls fleets of sUASs.

CHIMPS2: Survey description and $^{12}$CO emission in the Galactic Centre

The latest generation of Galactic-plane surveys is enhancing our ability to study the effects of galactic environment upon the process of star formation. We present the first data from CO Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey 2 (CHIMPS2). CHIMPS2 is a survey that will observe the Inner Galaxy, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Galaxy in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $(J = 3\rightarrow2)$ emission with the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The first CHIMPS2 data presented here are a first look towards the CMZ in $^{12}$CO J = 3$\rightarrow$2 and cover $-3^{\circ}\leq\,\ell\,\leq\,5^{\circ}$ and $\mid$b$\mid \leq 0.5^{\circ}$ with angular resolution of 15 arcsec, velocity resolution of 1 km s$^{-1}$, and rms $\Delta T_A ^\ast =$ 0.58 K at these resolutions. Such high-resolution observations of the CMZ will be a valuable data set for future studies, whilst complementing the existing Galactic Plane surveys, such as SEDIGISM, the Herschel infrared Galactic Plane Survey, and ATLASGAL. In this paper, we discuss the survey plan, the current observations and data, as well as presenting position-position maps of the region. The position-velocity maps detect foreground spiral arms in both absorption and emission.

Coupled Spin-Orbital Texture in a Prototypical Topological Insulator

One of the most important properties of topological insulators (TIs) is the helical spin texture of the Dirac surface states, which has been theoretically and experimentally argued to be left-handed helical above the Dirac point and right handed helical below. However, since the spin is not a good quantum number in these strongly spin-orbit coupled systems, this can not be a complete statement, and we must consider the total angular momentum J = L + S that is a contribution of the spin and orbital terms. Using a combination of orbital and spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we show a direct link between the different orbital and spin components, with a "backwards" spin texture directly observed for the in-plane orbital states of Bi2Se3.

In-Plane Orbital Texture Switch at the Dirac Point in the Topological Insulator Bi2Se3

Topological insulators are novel macroscopic quantum-mechanical phase of matter, which hold promise for realizing some of the most exotic particles in physics as well as application towards spintronics and quantum computation. In all the known topological insulators, strong spin-orbit coupling is critical for the generation of the protected massless surface states. Consequently, a complete description of the Dirac state should include both the spin and orbital (spatial) parts of the wavefunction. For the family of materials with a single Dirac cone, theories and experiments agree qualitatively, showing the topological state has a chiral spin texture that changes handedness across the Dirac point (DP), but they differ quantitatively on how the spin is polarized. Limited existing theoretical ideas predict chiral local orbital angular momentum on the two sides of the DP. However, there have been neither direct measurements nor calculations identifying the global symmetry of the spatial wavefunction. Here we present the first results from angle-resolved photoemission experiment and first-principles calculation that both show, counter to current predictions, the in-plane orbital wavefunctions for the surface states of Bi2Se3 are asymmetric relative to the DP, switching from being tangential to the k-space constant energy surfaces above DP, to being radial to them below the DP. Because the orbital texture switch occurs exactly at the DP this effect should be intrinsic to the topological physics, constituting an essential yet missing aspect in the description of the topological Dirac state. Our results also indicate that the spin texture may be more complex than previously reported, helping to reconcile earlier conflicting spin resolved measurements.

Optically detected NMR of optically hyperpolarized 31P neutral donors in 28Si

The electron and nuclear spins of the shallow donor 31P are promising qubit candidates invoked in many proposed Si-based quantum computing schemes. We have recently shown that the near-elimination of inhomogeneous broadening in highly isotopically enriched 28Si enables an optical readout of both the donor electron and nuclear spins by resolving the donor hyperfine splitting in the near-gap donor bound exciton transitions. We have also shown that pumping these same transitions can very quickly produce large electron and nuclear hyperpolarizations at low magnetic fields, where the equilibrium electron and nuclear polarizations are very small. Here we show preliminary results of the measurement of 31P neutral donor NMR parameters using this optical nuclear hyperpolarization mechanism for preparation of the 31P nuclear spin system, followed by optical readout of the resulting nuclear spin population after manipulation with NMR pulse sequences. This allows for the observation of single-shot NMR signals with very high signal to noise ratio under conditions where conventional NMR is not possible, due to the low concentration of 31P and the small equilibrium polarization.

High coercivity cobalt carbide nanoparticles processed via polyol reaction: A new permanent magnet material

Cobalt carbide nanoparticles were processed using polyol reduction chemistry that offers high product yields in a cost effective single-step process. Particles are shown to be acicular in morphology and typically assembled as clusters with room temperature coercivities greater than 4 kOe and maximum energy products greater than 20 KJ/m3. Consisting of Co3C and Co2C phases, the ratio of phase volume, particle size, and particle morphology all play important roles in determining permanent magnet properties. Further, the acicular particle shape provides an enhancement to the coercivity via dipolar anisotropy energy as well as offering potential for particle alignment in nanocomposite cores. While Curie temperatures are near 510K at temperatures approaching 700 K the carbide powders experience an irreversible dissociation to metallic cobalt and carbon thus limiting operational temperatures to near room temperature.

Simultaneous sub-second hyperpolarization of the nuclear and electron spins of phosphorus in silicon

We demonstrate a method which can hyperpolarize both the electron and nuclear spins of 31P donors in Si at low field, where both would be essentially unpolarized in equilibrium. It is based on the selective ionization of donors in a specific hyperfine state by optically pumping donor bound exciton hyperfine transitions, which can be spectrally resolved in 28Si. Electron and nuclear polarizations of 90% and 76%, respectively, are obtained in less than a second, providing an initialization mechanism for qubits based on these spins, and enabling further ESR and NMR studies on dilute 31P in 28Si.

Statistical Mechanics of the Cosmological Many-body Problem and its Relation to Galaxy Clustering

The cosmological many-body problem is effectively an infinite system of gravitationally interacting masses in an expanding universe. Despite the interactions' long-range nature, an analytical theory of statistical mechanics describes the spatial and velocity distribution functions which arise in the quasi-equilibrium conditions that apply to many cosmologies. Consequences of this theory agree well with the observed distribution of galaxies. Further consequences such as thermodynamics provide insights into the physical properties of this system, including its robustness to mergers, and its transition from a grand canonical ensemble to a collection of microcanonical ensembles with negative specific heat.
