Many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory, mesoscopic anthropic principle and biological evolution

We suggest to combine the Anthropic Principle with the Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Theory. Realizing the multiplicity of worlds it provides an opportunity of explanation of some important events which are assumed to be extremely improbable. The Mesoscopic Anthropic Principle suggested here is aimed to explain appearance of such events which are necessary for emergence of Life and Mind. It is complementary to the Cosmological Anthropic Principle explaining the fine tuning of fundamental constants. We briefly discuss various possible applications of the Mesoscopic Anthropic Principle including the Solar Eclipses and assembling of complex molecules. Besides, we address the problem of Time's Arrow in the framework of the Many-Worlds Interpretation. We suggest the recipe for disentangling of quantities defined by fundamental physical laws and by an anthropic selection. The main emphasis is made on the problem of the biological evolution.

Reconstruction of Scalar Potentials in Modified Gravity Models

We employ the superpotential technique for the reconstruction of cosmological models with a non-minimally coupled scalar field evolving on a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. The key point in this method is that the Hubble parameter is considered as a function of the scalar field and this allows one to reconstruct the scalar field potential and determine the dynamics of the field itself, without a priori fixing the Hubble parameter as a function of time or of the scale factor. The scalar field potentials that lead to de Sitter or asymptotic de Sitter solutions, and those that reproduce the cosmological evolution given by Einstein-Hilbert action plus a barotropic perfect fluid, have been obtained.

Higgs boson, renormalization group, and naturalness in cosmology

We consider the renormalization group improvement in the theory of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson playing the role of an inflaton with a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. At the one-loop level with the running of constants taken into account, it leads to a range of the Higgs mass that is entirely determined by the lower WMAP bound on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectral index. We find that the SM phenomenology is sensitive to current cosmological data, which suggests to perform more precise CMB measurements as a SM test complementary to the LHC program. By using the concept of a field-dependent cutoff, we show the naturalness of the gradient and curvature expansion in this model within the conventional perturbation theory range of the SM. We also discuss the relation of these results to two-loop calculations and the limitations of the latter caused by parametrization and gauge dependence problems.

Spherical `Top-Hat' Collapse in general Chaplygin gas dominated universes

We expand previous works on the spherical `top-hat' collapse (SC-TH) framework in generalized Chaplygin gas (gCg) dominated universes. Here we allow the collapse in all energetic components within the system. We analyze the non-linear stages of collapse for various choices of parameter αof the gCg model introducing an exact formulation for the so-called effective sound speed, $c_{eff}^2$. We show that, within the SC-TH framework, the growth of the structure becomes faster with increasing values of α.

On the functional determinant of a special operator with a zero mode in cosmology

The functional determinant of a special second order quantum-mechanical operator is calculated with its zero mode gauged out by the method of the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure. This operator subject to periodic boundary conditions arises in applications of the early Universe theory and, in particular, determines the one-loop statistical sum in quantum cosmology generated by a conformal field theory (CFT). The calculation is done for a special case of a periodic zero mode of this operator having two roots (nodes) within the period range, which corresponds to the class of cosmological instantons in the CFT driven cosmology with one oscillation of the cosmological scale factor of its Euclidean Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric.

The problem of singularities and chaos in cosmology

We consider different aspects of the problem of cosmological singularity such as the BKL oscillatory approach to the singularity, the new features of the cosmological dynamics in the neighbourhood of the singularity in multidimensional and superstring cosmological models and their connections with such a modern branch of mathematics as infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. The chaoticity of the oscillatory approach to the cosmological singularity is also discussed. The Conclusion contains some thoughts about the past and the future of the Universe in the light of the oscillatory approach to the Big Bang and the Big Crunch cosmological singularities.

CFT driven cosmology and the DGP/CFT correspondence

We present a dual 5D braneworld picture of a recently suggested model for a microcanonical description of a 4D cosmology driven by a conformal field theory with a large number of quantum fields. The 5D side of the duality relation is represented by a generalized brane induced gravity model in a Schwarzschild-de Sitter bulk. The values of the bulk cosmological and the induced 4D cosmological constants are determined by requiring the absence of conical singularity at the de Sitter horizon of the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter bulk. Those values belong to the vicinity of the upper bound of a range of admissible values for the cosmological constant. This upper bound is enforced by the 4D CFT and coincides with the natural gravitational cutoff in a theory with many quantum species. The resulting DGP/CFT duality suggests the possibility of a new type of {\em background independent} correspondence. A mechanism for inverting the sign of the effective cosmological constant is found, which might reconcile a negative value of the primordial cosmological constant compatible with supersymmetry with the one required by inflationary cosmology.

More about the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for the generalized Chaplygin gas

We investigate the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for the generalized Chaplygin gas with the aim of extending the findings of V. Gorini, U. Moschella, A. Y. Kamenshchik, V. Pasquier, and A. A. Starobinsky [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 78}, 064064 (2008)]. We study both the standard case, where we reproduce some previous results, and the phantom case. In the phantom case we show that even a superluminal group velocity arising for $α> 1$ cannot prevent the divergence of the pressure at a finite radial distance. Finally, we investigate how a modification of the generalized Chaplygin gas equation of state, required by causality arguments at densities very close to $Λ$, affects the results found so far.

Do supernovae favor tachyonic Big Brake instead de Sitter?

We investigate whether a tachyonic scalar field, encompassing both dark energy and dark matter-like features will drive our universe towards a Big Brake singularity or a de Sitter expansion. In doing this it is crucial to establish the parameter domain of the model, which is compatible with type Ia supernovae data. We find the 1-sigma contours and evolve the tachyonic sytem into the future. We conclude, that both future evolutions are allowed by observations, Big Brake becoming increasingly likely with the increase of the positive model parameter k.

Asymptotic freedom in inflationary cosmology with a non-minimally coupled Higgs field

We consider the renormalization group improvement in the theory of the Standard Model Higgs boson playing the role of an inflaton with a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. It suggests the range of the Higgs mass $135.6 {\rm GeV} \lesssim M_H\lesssim 184.5 {\rm GeV}$ compatible with the current CMB data (the lower WMAP bound on $n_s$), which is close to the widely accepted range dictated by the electroweak vacuum stability and perturbation theory bounds. We find the phenomenon of asymptotic freedom induced by this non-minimal curvature coupling, which brings the theory to the weak coupling domain everywhere except at the lower and upper boundary of this range. The renormalization group running of the basic quantity ${\boldmath $A_I$}$ -- the anomalous scaling in the non-minimally coupled Standard Model, which analytically determines all characteristics of the CMB spectrum -- brings ${\boldmath $A_I$}$ to small negative values at the inflation scale. This property is crucial for the above results and may also underlie the formation of initial conditions for the inflationary dynamics in quantum cosmology.

Tachyon cosmology, supernovae data and the Big Brake singularity

We compare the existing observational data on type Ia Supernovae with the evolutions of the universe predicted by a one-parameter family of tachyon models which we have introduced recently in paper \cite{we-tach}. Among the set of the trajectories of the model which are compatible with the data there is a consistent subset for which the universe ends up in a new type of soft cosmological singularity dubbed Big Brake. This opens up yet another scenario for the future history of the universe besides the one predicted by the standard $Λ$CDM model.

Density matrix of the Universe reloaded: origin of inflation and cosmological acceleration

We present an overview of a recently suggested new model of quantum initial conditions for the Universe in the form of a cosmological density matrix. This density matrix originally suggested in the Euclidean quantum gravity framework turns out to describe the microcanonical ensemble in the Lorentzian quantum gravity of spatially closed cosmological models. This ensemble represents an equipartition in the physical phase space of the theory (sum over everything), but in terms of the observable spacetime geometry it is peaked about a set of cosmologies limited to a bounded range of the cosmological constant. This suggests a mechanism to constrain the landscape of string vacua and a possible solution to the dark energy problem in the form of the quasi-equilibrium decay of the microcanonical state of the Universe. The effective Friedmann equation governing this decay incorporates the effect of the conformal anomaly of quantum fields and features a new mechanism for a cosmological acceleration stage -- big boost scenario. We also briefly discuss the relation between our model, the AdS/CFT correspondence and RS and DGP braneworlds.

Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations in presence of the Chaplygin gas: stars and wormhole-like solutions

We study static solutions of the Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff equations for spherically symmetric objects (stars) living in a space filled with the Chaplygin gas. Two cases are considered. In the normal case all solutions (excluding the de Sitter one) realize a three-dimensional spheroidal geometry because the radial coordinate achieves a maximal value (the "equator"). After crossing the equator, three scenarios are possible: a closed spheroid having a Schwarzschild-type singularity with infinite blue-shift at the "south pole", a regular spheroid, and a truncated spheroid having a scalar curvature singularity at a finite value of the radial coordinate. The second case arises when the modulus of the pressure exceeds the energy density (the phantom Chaplygin gas). There is no more equator and all solutions have the geometry of a truncated spheroid with the same type of singularity. We consider also static spherically symmetric configurations existing in a universe filled with the phantom Chaplygin gas only. In this case two classes of solutions exist: truncated spheroids and solutions of the wormhole type with a throat. However, the latter are not asymptotically flat and possess curvature singularities at finite values of the radial coordinate. Thus, they may not be used as models of observable compact astrophysical objects.

Inflation scenario via the Standard Model Higgs boson and LHC

We consider a quantum corrected inflation scenario driven by a generic GUT or Standard Model type particle model whose scalar field playing the role of an inflaton has a strong non-minimal coupling to gravity. We show that currently widely accepted bounds on the Higgs mass falsify the suggestion of the paper arXiv:0710.3755 (where the role of radiative corrections was underestimated) that the Standard Model Higgs boson can serve as the inflaton. However, if the Higgs mass could be raised to $\sim 230$ GeV, then the Standard Model could generate an inflationary scenario with the spectral index of the primordial perturbation spectrum $n_s\simeq 0.935$ (barely matching present observational data) and the very low tensor-to-scalar perturbation ratio $r\simeq 0.0006$.

Two-field cosmological models and large-scale cosmic magnetic fields

We consider two different toy cosmological models based on two fields (one normal scalar and one phantom) realizing the same evolution of the Bang-to-Rip type. One of the fields (pseudoscalar) interacts with the magnetic field breaking the conformal invariance of the latter. The effects of the amplification of cosmic magnetic fields are studied and it is shown that the presence of such effects can discriminate between different cosmological models realizing the same global evolution of the universe.
