Evidence for entangled states of two coupled flux qubits

We have studied the low-frequency magnetic susceptibility of two inductively coupled flux qubits using the impedance measurement technique (IMT), through their influence on the resonant properties of a weakly coupled high-quality tank circuit. In a single qubit, an IMT dip in the tank's current--voltage phase angle at the level anticrossing yields the amplitude of coherent flux tunneling. For two qubits, the difference (IMT deficit) between the sum of single-qubit dips and the dip amplitude when both qubits are at degeneracy shows that the system is in a mixture of entangled states (a necessary condition for entanglement). The dependence on temperature and relative bias between the qubits allows one to determine all the parameters of the effective Hamiltonian and equilibrium density matrix, and confirms the formation of entangled eigenstates.

Radio-Frequency Method for Investigation of Quantum Properties of Superconducting Structures

We implement the impedance measurement technique (IMT) for characterization of interferometer-type superconducting qubits. In the framework of this method, the interferometer loop is inductively coupled to a high-quality tank circuit. We show that the IMT is a powerful tool to study a response of externally controlled two-level system to different types of excitations. Conclusive information about qubits is obtained from the read-out of the tank properties.

Neutrino oscillations in low density medium

For the case of small matter effects: $V \ll Δm^2/2E$, where $V$ is the matter potential, we develop the perturbation theory using $ε\equiv 2VE/Δm^2$ as the expansion parameter. We derive simple and physically transparent formulas for the oscillation probabilities in the lowest order in $ε$ which are valid for arbitrary density profile. The formulas can be applied for propagation of the solar and supernova neutrinos in matter of the Earth, substantially simplifying numerical calculations. Using these formulas we study sensitivity of the oscillation effects to structures of the density profile situated at different distances from the detector $d$. We show that for the mass-to-flavor state transitions, {\it e.g.}, $ν_2 \to ν_e$, the sensitivity is suppressed for remote structures: $d > l_ν E/ΔE$, where $l_ν$ is the oscillation length and $ΔE/E$ is the energy resolution of detector.

Homestake result, sterile neutrinos and low energy solar neutrino experiments

The Homestake result is about ~ 2 σlower than the Ar-production rate, Q_{Ar}, predicted by the LMA MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem. Also there is no apparent upturn of the energy spectrum (R \equiv N_{obs}/N_{SSM}) at low energies in SNO and Super-Kamiokande. Both these facts can be explained if a light, Δm^2_{01} ~ (0.2 - 2) \cdot 10^{-5} eV^2, sterile neutrino exists which mixes very weakly with active neutrinos: \sin^2 2α~ (10^{-5} - 10^{-3}). We perform both the analytical and numerical study of the conversion effects in the system of two active neutrinos with the LMA parameters and one weakly mixed sterile neutrino. The presence of sterile neutrino leads to a dip in the survival probability in the intermediate energy range E = (0.5 - 5) MeV thus suppressing the Be, or/and pep, CNO as well as B electron neutrino fluxes. Apart from diminishing Q_{Ar} it leads to decrease of the Ge-production rate and may lead to decrease of the BOREXINO signal and CC/NC ratio at SNO. Future studies of the solar neutrinos by SNO, SK, BOREXINO and KamLAND as well as by the new low energy experiments will allow us to check this possibility. We present a general analysis of modifications of the LMA energy profile due to mixing with new neutrino states.

Neutrinos from SN1987A: flavor conversion and interpretation of results

After recent results from solar neutrino experiments and KamLAND we know that neutrinos from SN1987A underwent flavor conversion. This must be taken into account in the analysis of the data. Assuming the normal mass hierarchy of neutrinos we calculate the permutation factors p for the Kamiokande-2, IMB and Baksan detectors. The conversion inside the star leads to p = 0.28 - 0.32; regeneration effects inside the Earth reduce this factor down to 0.15 - 0.20 (at E = 40 MeV). We study in details the influence of conversion on the observed signal depending on the parameters of the original neutrino spectra. For a given set of these parameters, the conversion could increase the average energy of the observed events by up to 50 % and the number of events by a factor of 2 at Kamiokande-2 and of 3 - 5 at IMB. Inversely, we find that neglecting the conversion effects can lead up to 50 % error in the determination of the average energy of the original antinu_e flux and about 50 % error on its luminosity. By comparison with experimental data we conclude that the Kamiokande-2 data alone do not favor strong conversion effect. In contrast, the combined analysis of the Kamiokande and IMB results slightly favors strong conversion effects (that is, large difference of the original spectra). In comparison with the no oscillation case, the latter require lower average energy and higher luminosity of the original antinu_e flux.

Neutrinos: "...annus mirabilis"

Main results and achievements of 2002 - 2003 in neutrino physics are summarized. The field moves quickly to new phase with clear experimental and phenomenological programs, and with new theoretical puzzle which may lead us to discoveries of the fundamental importance. One of the main results is amazing pattern of the lepton mixing which emerges from the data. The key questions are: Does lepton mixing imply new symmetry of Nature? Is the large (maximal?) mixing related to degeneracy of the neutrino mass spectrum? In this connection priorities of the future studies are formulated.

Signature of entangled eigenstates in the magnetic response of two coupled flux qubits

We study dissipative dynamics and a magnetic response of two coupled flux qubits interacting with a high quality tank in the framework of the impedance measurement technique (IMT). It is shown that the observation of the difference between a sum of IMT signals from separated qubits and the signal from the system when both qubits are in the degeneracy point (IMT deficit) implies immediately a formation of the entangled two-qubit eigenstates.

Atmospheric neutrinos: LMA oscillations, Ue3 induced interference and CP-violation

We consider oscillations of the low energy (sub-GeV sample) atmospheric neutrinos in the three neutrino context. We present the semi-analytic study of the neutrino evolution and calculate characteristics of the e-like events (total number, energy spectra and zenith angle distributions) in the presence of oscillations. At low energies there are three different contributions to the number of events: the LMA contribution (from electron-neutrino oscillations driven by the solar oscillation parameters), the Ue3-contribution proportional to s13**2, and the Ue3 - induced interference of the two amplitudes driven by the solar oscillation parameters. The interference term is sensitive to the CP-violation phase. We describe in details properties of these contributions. We find that the LMA, the interference and Ue3 contributions can reach 5 - 6%, 2 - 3% and 1 - 2 % correspondingly. An existence of the significant (> 3 - 5 %) excess of the e-like events in the sub-GeV sample and the absence of the excess in the multi-GeV range testifies for deviation of the 2-3 mixing from maximum. We consider a possibility to measure the deviation as well as the CP- violation phase in future atmospheric neutrino studies.

Solar neutrinos: the SNO salt phase results and physics of conversion

We have performed analysis of the solar neutrino data including results from the SNO salt phase as well as the combined analysis of the solar and the KamLAND results. The best fit values of neutrino parameters are Delta m^2 = 7.1e-5 eV^2, tan^2θ= 0.40 with the boron flux f_B = 1.04. New SNO results strongly disfavor maximal mixing and the h-LMA region (Delta m^2 > 1e-4 eV^2) which is accepted now at the 3-sigma level. We find the 3-sigma upper bounds: Delta m^2 < 1.7e-4$ eV^2 and tan^2θ< 0.64, and the lower bound Delta m^2 > 4.8e-5 eV^2. Non-zero 13-mixing does not change these results significantly. The present data determine quantitatively the physical picture of the solar neutrino conversion. At high energies relevant for SNO and Super-Kamiokande the deviation of the effective survival probability from the non-oscillatory value is about 10 - 14%. The oscillation effect contribution to this difference about 10% and the Earth regeneration is about 3 - 4%. At low energies (E < 1 MeV) the matter corrections to vacuum oscillation effect are below 5%. The predictions for the forthcoming measurements are given which include the spectral distortion and CC/NC ratio at SNO, the Day-Night asymmetry, the KamLAND spectrum and rate.

Neutrino Physics: Open Theoretical Questions

We know that neutrino mass and mixing provide a window to physics beyond the Standard Model. Now this window is open, at least partly. And the questions are: what do we see, which kind of new physics, and how far "beyond"? I summarize the present knowledge of neutrino mass and mixing, and then formulate the main open questions. Following the bottom-up approach, properties of the neutrino mass matrix are considered. Then different possible ways to uncover the underlying physics are discussed. Some results along the line of: see-saw, GUT and SUSY GUT are reviewed.

Quasiparticle Decoherence in d-wave Superconducting Qubits

It is usually argued that the presence of gapless quasiparticle excitations at the nodes of the d-wave superconducting gap should strongly decohere the quantum states of a d-wave qubit, making quantum effects practically unobservable. Using a self-consistent linear response non-equilibrium quasiclassical formalism, we show that this is not necessarily true. We find quasiparticle conductance of a d-wave grain boundary junction to be strongly phase dependent. Midgap states as well as nodal quasiparticles contribute to the conductance and therefore decoherence. Quantum behavior is estimated to be detectable in a qubit containing a d-wave junction with appropriate parameters.

Silent Phase Qubit Based on d-Wave Josephson Junctions

We report on design and fabrication of a new type of flux qubit that capitalizes on intrinsic properties of submicron YBCO grain boundary junctions. The operating point is protected from the fluctuations of the external fields, already on the classical level; the effects of external perturbations are absent, to the second or third order, depending on the character of the coupling. We propose an experiment to observe quantum tunneling and Rabi oscillations in the qubit. Estimate of the decoherence due to fluctuations of the external flux is presented.

Continuous Monitoring of Rabi Oscillations in a Josephson Flux Qubit

Under resonant irradiation, a quantum system can undergo coherent (Rabi) oscillations in time. We report evidence for such oscillations in a _continuously_ observed three-Josephson-junction flux qubit, coupled to a high-quality tank circuit tuned to the Rabi frequency. In addition to simplicity, this method of_Rabi spectroscopy_ enabled a long coherence time of about 2.5 microseconds, corresponding to an effective qubit quality factor \~7000.

Probing the neutrino mass hierarchy and the 13-mixing with supernovae

We consider in details the effects of the 13-mixing (sin^2 theta_{13}) and of the type of mass hierarchy/ordering (sign[ Delta m^2_{13}]) on neutrino signals from the gravitational collapses of stars. The observables (characteristics of the energy spectra of nu_e and antinu_e events) sensitive to sin^2 theta_{13} and sign[Delta m^2_{13}] have been calculated. They include the ratio of average energies of the spectra, r_E = /<\bar E >, the ratio of widths of the energy distributions, r_Gamma, the ratios of total numbers of nu_e and antinu_e events at low energies, S, and in the high energy tails, R_{tail}. We construct and analyze scatter plots which show the predictions for the observables for different intervals of sin^2 theta_{13} and signs of Delta m^2_{13}, taking into account uncertainties in the original neutrino spectra, the star density profile, etc.. Regions in the space of observables r_E, r_Gamma, S, R_{tail} exist in which certain mass hierarchy and intervals of sin^2 theta_{13} can be identified or discriminated. We elaborate on the method of the high energy tails in the spectra of events. The conditions are formulated for which sin^2 theta_{13} can be (i) measured, (ii) restricted from below, (iii) restricted from above. We comment on the possibility to determine sin^2 theta_{13} using the time dependence of the signals due to the propagation of the shock wave through the resonance layers of the star. We show that the appearance of the delayed Earth matter effect in one of the channels (nu_e or antinu_e) in combination with the undelayed effect in the other channel will allow to identify the shock wave appeareance and determine the mass hierarchy.

The MSW effect and Solar Neutrinos

The MSW (Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein) effect is the effect of transformation of one neutrino species (flavor) into another one in a medium with varying density. Three basic elements of the effect include: the refraction of neutrinos in matter, the resonance (level crossing) and the adiabaticity. The key notion is {\it the neutrino eigenstates} in matter. Physical picture of the effect is described in terms of the flavors and the relative phases of eigenstates and the transitions between eigenstates. Features of the large mixing realization of the MSW effect are discussed. The large mixing MSW effect (LMA) provides the solution of the solar neutrino problem. We show in details how this mechanism works. Physics beyond the LMA solution is discussed. The lower $Ar$-production rate (in comparison with the LMA prediction) and absence of significant "turn up" of the spectrum at low energies can be due to an additional effect of the light sterile neutrino with very small mixing.

On the Effective Mass of the Electron Neutrino in Beta Decay

In the presence of mixing between massive neutrino states, the distortion of the electron spectrum in beta decay is, in general, a function of several masses and mixing angles. For $3ν$-schemes which describe the solar and atmospheric neutrino data, this distortion can be described by a single effective mass, under certain conditions. In the literature, two different definitions for the effective mass have been suggested. We show that for quasi-degenerate mass schemes (with an overall mass scale $m$ and splitting $Δm^2$) the two definitions coincide up to $(Δm^2)^2/m^4$ corrections. We consider the impact of different effective masses on the integral energy spectrum. We show that the spectrum with a single mass can be used also to fit the data in the case of $4ν$-schemes motivated, in particular, by the LSND results. In this case the accuracy of the mass determination turns out to be better than $(10 - 15)%$.

Josephson-phase qubit without tunneling

We show that a complete set of one-bit gates can be realized by coupling the two logical states of a phase qubit to a third level (at higher energy) using microwave pulses. Thus, one can achieve coherent control without invoking any tunneling between the qubit levels. We propose two implementations, using rf-SQUIDs and d-wave Josephson junctions.

LMA MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem and first KamLAND results

The first KamLAND results are in a very good agreement with the predictions made on the basis of the solar neutrino data and the LMA realization of the MSW mechanism. We perform a combined analysis of the KamLAND (rate, spectrum) and the solar neutrino data with a free boron neutrino flux f_B. The best fit values of neutrino parameters are Delta m^2 = 7.3e-5 eV^2, tg^2 theta = 0.41 and f_B = 1.05 with the 1 sigma intervals: Delta m^2 = (6.2 - 8.4)e-5 eV^2, tg^2 theta = 0.33 - 0.54. We find the 3 sigma upper bounds: Delta m^2 < 2.8e-4 eV^2 and tg^2 theta < 0.84, and the lower bound Delta m^2 > 4e-5 eV^2. At 99% C.L. the KamLAND spectral result splits the LMA region into two parts with the preferred one at Delta m^2 < 1e-4 eV^2. The higher Delta m^2 region is accepted at about 2 sigma level. We show that effects of non-zero 13-mixing, sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04, are small leading to a slight improvement of the fit in higher Delta m^2 region. In the best fit point we predict for SNO: CC/NC = 0.33 +0.05-0.03 and A_{DN}(SNO) = 2.8+-0.8 % (68% C.L.), and A_{DN}(SNO) < 9 % at the 3 sigma level. Further improvements in the determination of the parameters are discussed and implications of the solar neutrino and KamLAND results are considered.
