Neganov-Luke amplified cryogenic light detectors for the background discrimination in neutrinoless double beta decay search with TeO$_{2}$ bolometers

We demonstrate that Neganov-Luke amplified cryogenic light detectors with Transition Edge Sensor read-out can be applied for the background suppression in cryogenic experiments searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}\text{Te}$ with TeO$_{2}$ based bolometers. Electron and gamma induced events can be discriminated from $α$ events by detecting the Cherenkov light produced by the $β$ particles emitted in the decay. We use the Cherenkov light produced by events in the full energy peak of $^{208}\text{Tl}$ and by events from a $^{147}\text{Sm}$ source to show that at the Q-value of the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}\text{Te}$ ($Q_{ββ} = 2.53 \,\text{MeV}$), a separation of $e^{-}/γ$ events from $α$ events can be achieved on an event-by-event basis with practically no reduction in signal acceptance.

Radiopurity of CaWO$_4$ Crystals for Direct Dark Matter Search with CRESST and EURECA

The direct dark matter search experiment CRESST uses scintillating CaWO$_4$ single crystals as targets for possible WIMP scatterings. An intrinsic radioactive contamination of the crystals as low as possible is crucial for the sensitivity of the detectors. In the past CaWO$_4$ crystals operated in CRESST were produced by institutes in Russia and the Ukraine. Since 2011 CaWO$_4$ crystals have also been grown at the crystal laboratory of the Technische Universität München (TUM) to better meet the requirements of CRESST and of the future tonne-scale multi-material experiment EURECA. The radiopurity of the raw materials and of first TUM-grown crystals was measured by ultra-low background $γ$-spectrometry. Two TUM-grown crystals were also operated as low-temperature detectors at a test setup in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. These measurements were used to determine the crystals' intrinsic $α$-activities which were compared to those of crystals produced at other institutes. The total $α$-activities of TUM-grown crystals as low as 1.23 $\pm$ 0.06 mBq/kg were found to be significantly smaller than the activities of crystals grown at other institutes typically ranging between ~15 mBq/kg and ~35 mBq/kg.

Results from 730 kg days of the CRESST-II Dark Matter Search

The CRESST-II cryogenic Dark Matter search, aiming at detection of WIMPs via elastic scattering off nuclei in CaWO$_4$ crystals, completed 730 kg days of data taking in 2011. We present the data collected with eight detector modules, each with a two-channel readout; one for a phonon signal and the other for coincidently produced scintillation light. The former provides a precise measure of the energy deposited by an interaction, and the ratio of scintillation light to deposited energy can be used to discriminate different types of interacting particles and thus to distinguish possible signal events from the dominant backgrounds. Sixty-seven events are found in the acceptance region where a WIMP signal in the form of low energy nuclear recoils would be expected. We estimate background contributions to this observation from four sources: 1) "leakage" from the e/γ-band 2) "leakage" from the α-particle band 3) neutrons and 4) Pb-206 recoils from Po-210 decay. Using a maximum likelihood analysis, we find, at a high statistical significance, that these sources alone are not sufficient to explain the data. The addition of a signal due to scattering of relatively light WIMPs could account for this discrepancy, and we determine the associated WIMP parameters.

Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos: Limitations for Direct Dark Matter Searches

In experiments for direct dark matter searches, neutrinos coherently scattering off nuclei can produce similar events as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). To reach sensitivities better than about 10^-10 pb for the elastic WIMP nucleon spin-independent cross section in the zero-background limit, energy thresholds for nuclear recoils should be >2.05 keV for CaWO_4, >4.91 keV for Ge, >2.89 keV for Xe, >8.62 keV for Ar and >15.93 keV for Ne as target material. Atmospheric neutrinos limit the achievable sensitivity for the background-free direct dark matter search to >10^-12 pb.

Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos: Background Sources for the Direct Dark Matter Searches

In experiments for direct dark matter searches, neutrinos coherently scattering off nuclei can produce similar events as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The calculated count rate for solar neutrinos in such experiments is a few events per ton-year. This count rate strongly depends on the nuclear recoil energy threshold achieved in the experiments for the WIMP search. We show that solar neutrinos can be a serious background source for direct dark matter search experiments using Ge, Ar, Xe and CaWO_4 as target materials. To reach sensitivities better than approximatly 10^-10 pb for the elastic WIMP nucleon spin-independent cross section in the zero-background limit, energy thresholds for nuclear recoils should be approximatly >2.05 keV for CaWO_4, >4.91 keV for Ge, >2.89 keV for Xe, and >8.62 keV for Ar as target material. Next-generation experiments should not only strive for a reduction of the present energy thresholds but mainly focus on an increase of the target mass. Atmospheric neutrinos limit the achievable sensitivity for the background-free direct dark matter search to approximatly >10^-12 pb.
