Diffusion of Cosmic Rays in the Expanding Universe. II. Energy Spectra of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

We consider the astrophysical implications of the diffusion equation solution for Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) in the expanding universe, obtained in paper I (V.Berezinsky & A.Gazizov, ApJ 643 (2006) 8). The UHECR spectra are calculated in a model with sources located in vertices of the cubic grid with a linear constant (source separation) d. The calculations are performed for various magnetic field configurations (B_c,l_c), where l_c is the basic scale of the turbulence and B_c is the coherent magnetic field on this scale. The main purpose of these calculations is to demonstrate the validity of the solution obtained in paper I and to compare this solution with the Syrovatsky solution used in previous works. The Syrovatsky solution must be necessarily embedded in the static cosmological model. The formal comparison of the two solutions with all parameters being fixed identically reveals the appreciable discrepancies between two spectra. These discrepancies are less if in both models the different sets of the best-fit parameters are used.

On astrophysical solution to ultra high energy cosmic rays

We argue that an astrophysical solution to UHECR problem is viable. The pectral features of extragalactic protons interacting with CMB are calculated in model-independent way. Using the power-law generation spectrum $\propto E^{-γ_g}$ as the only assumption, we analyze four features of the proton spectrum: the GZK cutoff, dip, bump and the second dip. We found the dip, induced by electron-positron production on CMB, as the most robust feature, existing in energy range $1\times 10^{18} - 4\times 10^{19}$ eV. Its shape is stable relative to various phenomena included in calculations. The dip is well confirmed by observations of AGASA, HiRes, Fly's Eye and Yakutsk detectors. The best fit is reached at $γ_g =2.7$, with the allowed range 2.55 - 2.75. The dip is used for energy calibration of the detectors. After the energy calibration the fluxes and spectra of all three detectors agree perfectly, with discrepancy between AGASA and HiRes at $E> 1\times 10^{20}$ eV being not statistically significant. The agreement of the dip with observations should be considered as confirmation of UHE proton interaction with CMB. The dip has two flattenings. The high energy flattening at $E \approx 1\times 10^{19}$ eV automatically explains ankle. The low-energy flattening at $E \approx 1\times 10^{18}$ eV provides the transition to galactic cosmic rays. This transition is studied quantitatively. The UHECR sources, AGN and GRBs, are studied in a model-dependent way, and acceleration is discussed. Based on the agreement of the dip with existing data, we make the robust prediction for the spectrum at $1\times 10^{18} - 1\times 10^{20}$ eV to be measured in the nearest future by Auger detector.

Diffusion of Cosmic Rays in Expanding Universe. (I)

We present an analytic solution to diffusion equation for high energy cosmic rays in the expanding universe. The particles are assumed to be ultra-relativistic and they can have energy losses arbitrarily dependent on energy and time. The obtained solution generalizes the Syrovatsky solution, valid for the case when energy losses and diffusion coefficient are time-independent.

Dip in UHECR spectrum as signature of proton interaction with CMB

Ultrahigh energy (UHE) extragalactic protons propagating through cosmic microwave radiation (CMB) acquire the spectrum features in the form of the dip, bump (pile-up protons) and the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff. We have performed the analysis of these features in terms of the modification factor. This analysis is weakly model-dependent, especially in case of the dip. The energy shape of the dip is confirmed by the Akeno-AGASA data with $χ^2=19.06$ for d.o.f. =17 with two free parameters used for comparison. The agreement with HiRes data is also very good. This is the strong evidence that UHE cosmic rays observed at energies $1\times 10^{18}$ eV - $4\times 10^{19}$ eV are extragalactic protons propagating through CMB. The dip is also present in case of diffusive propagation in magnetic field.

Signatures of AGN model for UHECR

We demonstrate that the energy spectra of Ultra High Energy Cosmic rays (UHECR) as observed by AGASA, Fly's Eye, HiRes and Yakutsk detectors, have the imprints of UHE proton interaction with the CMB radiation in the form of the dip at $E\sim 1\times 10^{19}$~ eV, of the beginning of the GZK cutoff, and of very good agreement with calculated spectrum shape. We argue that these data, combined with small-angle clustering and correlation with AGN (BL Lacs), point to the AGN model of UHECR origin at energies $E \lsim 1\times 10^{20}$ eV. The excess of the events at $E \gsim 1\times 10^{20}$ eV, which is observed by AGASA (but absent in HiRes data) can be explained by another component of UHECR, e.g. by UHECR from superheavy dark matter.

Ultra high energy cosmic rays from extragalactic astrophysical sources: energy losses and spectra

The energy losses and spectra of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) are calculated for protons as primary particles. The attention is given to the energy losses due to electron-positron production in collisions with the microwave 2.73 K photons. The energy spectra are calculated for several models, which differ by production spectra and by source distribution, namely: (i) Uniform distribution of the sources with steep generation spectra with indices 2.4 - 2.7, with cosmological evolution and without it. In this case it is possible to fit the shape of the observed spectrum up to 8.10^{19} eV, but the required CR emissivity is too high and the GZK cutoff is present. (ii) Uniform distribution of the sources with flat generation spectrum dE/E^2 which is relevant to GRBs. The calculated spectrum is in disagreement with the observed one. The agreement at E\lesssim 8.10^{19} eV can be reached using a complex generation spectrum, but the required CR emissivity is three orders of magnitude higher than that of GRBs, and the predicted spectrum has the GZK cutoff. (iii) The case of local enhancement within region of size 10 - 30 Mpc with overdensity given by factor 3- 30. The overdensity larger than 10 is needed to eliminate the GZK cutoff.

Hard Pomeron Enhanced Cascade Production and Flux Shadowing in High-Energy Neutrino Astrophysics

Various implications of new, non-perturbative pomeron inspired enhancement of small-x neutrino-nucleon structure functions for high-energy neutrino astrophysics are discussed. At x larger than 10^{-5} these functions are given by perturbative QCD, while at lower x they are determined by a specific generalization of F_2^{ep}(x,Q^2) description, proposed by A. Donnachie and P. V. Landshoff (their two-component model comprises hard and soft pomerons), to neutrino-nucleon scattering case. We found that i) such enhancement causes the most rapid growth of neutrino-nucleon cross-sections at high energies, ii) pomeron effects may be perceptible in the rates of neutrino induced events in future giant detectors and iii) the rate of high-energy neutrino flux evolution (due to absorption (CC+NC) and regeneration (NC)) on its pass through a large column depth of matter may be subjected to additional influence of hard pomeron. Solving transport equations for the initially power-law decreasing neutrino spectra, we have evaluated shadow factors for several column depths and spectrum indices. The results are compared with analogous calculations, performed within a trivial small-x extrapolation of structure functions. Hard pomeron enhanced high-energy shadow factors are found to be many orders of magnitude lower than those obtained within ordinary perturbative QCD.

Small-x Growth of Nucleon Structure Functions and Its Manifestations in Ultrahigh-Energy Neutrino Astrophysics

Rapid growth of neutrino-nucleon cross-sections at high energies due to hypothetical hard pomeron enhancement of $νN$-structure functions is discussed. Differential and integral hadron moments, which, together with cross-sections, define rates of hadron-electromagnetic cascades in a neutrino detector are calculated for different power-law decreasing neutrino spectra. For comparison two small-x extrapolation schemes are discussed. First includes Regge theory inspired hard pomeron enhancement of $νN$-structure functions. The second is obtained with the help of trivial extrapolation of perturbative QCD structure functions from the large x region to the small x one. Implications of hard pomeron effects for cross-sections and hadron moments are demonstrated. The most pronounced manifestations are found in integral hadron moments for the case of charged current electron (anti)neutrinos scattering off nucleons.

Hard pomeron enhancement of ultrahigh-energy neutrino-nucleon cross-sections

An unknown small-x behavior of nucleon structure functions gives appreciable uncertainties to high-energy neutrino-nucleon cross-sections. We construct structure functions using at small x Regge inspired description by A. Donnachie and P. V. Landshoff with soft and hard pomerons, and employing at larger x the perturbative QCD expressions. The smooth interpolation between two regimes for each Q^2 is provided with the help of simple polynomial functions. To obtain low-x neutrino-nucleon structure functions $F_2^{νN, \bar νN}(x,Q^2)$ and singlet part of $F_{3}^{νN,\bar νN}(x,Q^2)$ from Donnachie-Landshoff function $F_2^{ep}(x,Q^2)$, we use the Q^2-dependent ratios R_2(Q^2) and R_3(Q^2) derived from perturbative QCD calculations. Non-singlet part of F_3 at low x, which is very small, is taken as power-law extrapolation of perturbative function at larger x. This procedure gives a full set of smooth neutrino-nucleon structure functions in the whole range of x and Q^2 at interest. Using these structure functions, we have calculated the neutrino-nucleon cross-sections and compared them with some other cross-sections known in literature. Our cross-sections turn out to be the highest among them at the highest energies, which is explained by contribution of the hard pomeron.

On Symmetry Properties of Quaternionic Analogs of Julia Sets

By means of theory group analysis, some algebraic and geometrical properties of quaternion analogs of \emph{Julia} sets are investigated. We argue that symmetries, intrinsic to quaternions, give rise to the class of identical \emph{Julia} sets, which does not exist in complex number case. In the case of quadratic quaternionic mapping $X_{k+1} = X_k^2 + C$ these symmetries mean, that the shape of fractal \emph{Julia} set is completely defined by just two numbers, $C_0$ and $|{\bf C}|$. Moreover, for given $C_0$ the vector part of the \emph{Julia} set may be obtained by rotation of a two-dimensional \emph{Julia} subset of arbitrary plane, comprising ${\bf C}$, around the axis ${\bf n} = {\bf C}/|{\bf C}|$.
