Fluctuations in photon local delay time and their relation to phase spectra in random media

The temporal evolution of microwave pulses transmitted through random dielectric samples is obtained from the Fourier transform of field spectra. Large fluctuations are found in the local or single channel delay time, which is the first temporal moment of the transmitted pulse at a point in the output speckle pattern. Both positive and negative values of local delay time are observed. The widest distribution is found at low intensity values near a phase singularity in the transmitted speckle pattern. In the limit of long duration, narrow-bandwidth incident pulses, the single channel delay time equals the spectral derivative of the phase of the transmitted field. Fluctuations of the phase of the transmitted field thus reflect the underlying statistics of dynamics in mesoscopic systems.

Measurements of Intensity Distributions in the Approach to Localization

We report measurements of intensity distributions of transmitted microwave radiation in quasi-1D samples with lengths L as large as the localization length $ξ$. In contrast to negative exponential statistics found in the diffusive limit, the distribution falls as a stretched exponential of power 1/2 and becomes nearly log-normal as L approaches $ξ$. We confirm the relation between the moments and full distributions of the intensity and total transmission obtained by Kogan and Kaveh using random matrix theory. Good agreement is found when this relationship is used to compare measurements of intensity distribution in strongly absorbing samples with lengths as large as $ξ$ with calculations by Brouwer of the transmission distribution. The variances of the measured distributions increase superlinearly near the localization threshold confirming the coexistence of localization and absorption and the suitability of these variances as measures of the closeness to the localization threshold.

Measurement of the Probability Distribution of Total Transmission in Random Waveguides

Measurements have been made of the probability distribution of total transmission of microwave radiation in waveguides filled with randomly positioned scatterers which would have values of the dimensionless conductance g near unity. The distributions are markedly non-Gaussian and have exponential tails. The measured distributions are accurately described by diagrammatic and random matrix calculations carried out for nonabsorbing samples in the limit g >> 1 when g is expressed in terms of the variance of the distribution, which equals the degree of long-range intensity correlation across the output face of the sample.
