Gouy-phase effects in the frequency combs of an optical parametric oscillator

We investigate the transverse mode effects on the frequency combs generated by a type-I optical parametric oscillator (OPO) below threshold. We take the diffraction effects fully into account, considering usual OPO architectures instead of the self-imaging design. Further, we show that an OPO pumped with structured light produces multiple frequency combs simultaneously, corresponding to different combinations of spatial modes in the downconverted fields. This result may apply to the production of hybrid multipartite entanglement in the spatiotemporal modes of a single OPO.

Machine learning recognition of light orbital-angular-momentum superpositions

We developed a method to characterize arbitrary superpositions of light orbital angular momentum (OAM) with high fidelity by using astigmatic tomography and machine learning processing. In order to define each superposition unequivocally, we combine two intensity measurements. The first one is the direct image of the input beam, which cannot distinguish between opposite OAM components. This ambiguity is removed by a second image obtained after astigmatic transformation of the input beam. Samples of these image pairs are used to train a convolution neural network and achieve high fidelity recognition of arbitrary OAM superpositions with dimension up to five.

Spin-orbit implementation of Solovay-Kitaev decomposition of single-qubit channels

The Solovay-Kitaev theorem allows us to approximate any single-qubit gate to arbitrary accuracy with a finite sequence of fundamental operations from a universal set of gates. Inspired by this decomposition, we present a quantum channel simulator capable of implementing any completely positive trace-preserving map. Our realization consists of one ancillary qubit, encoded in the transverse mode of a laser beam (orbital degree of freedom), one qubit system, encoded in its polarization (spin), one spin-orbit CNOT gate and four single-qubit operations performed with prisms and polarization components. Our results describe the implementation of arbitrary single-qubit channels on the photon polarization using the transverse mode as the ancillary qubit.

Bell inequality violation and operator ordering in quantum theory

We investigate the role played by quantum operator ordering in the correlations that characterize two-photon polarization Bell measurements. The Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) criterion is investigated in the normal ordering imposed by the photodetection theory and in the symmetric ordering that constitutes the standard prescription for building Hermitian operators from products of noncommuting observables. The two approaches are obtained in a single theoretical framework, where operator ordering is directly associated with the representation used for the density matrix. Moreover, this discussion can be recast in terms of the contribution given by the vacuum fluctuations to the detected signals. We also envisage possible detection schemes sensitive to these fluctuations with recent technological developments.

Optical Trapping in a Dark Focus

The superposition of a Gaussian mode and a Laguerre-Gauss mode with $\ell=0,p\neq0$ generates the so-called bottle beam: a dark focus surrounded by a bright region. In this paper, we theoretically explore the use of bottle beams as an optical trap for dielectric spheres with a refractive index smaller than that of their surrounding medium. The forces acting on a small particle are derived within the dipole approximation and used to simulate the Brownian motion of the particle in the trap. The intermediate regime of particle size is studied numerically and it is found that stable trapping of larger dielectric particles is also possible. Based on the results of the intermediate regime analysis, an experiment aimed at trapping living organisms in the dark focus of a bottle beam is proposed.

Pattern revivals from fractional Gouy phases in structured light

We investigate pattern revivals in specially designed optical structures that combine different transverse modes. In general, the resulting pattern is not preserved under free propagation and gets transformed due to non synchronized Gouy phases. However, it is possible to build structures in which the Gouy phases synchronize at specific fractional values, thus recovering the initial pattern at the corresponding longitudinal positions. This effect is illustrated with a radially structured light spot in which the beam energy can be addressed to different positions without the need of intermediate optical components, what can be useful for optical communications and optical tweezing with structured beams.

Fine-tuning of orbital angular momentum in an optical parametric oscillator

We investigate the dynamical properties of a type-II optical parametric oscillator pumped by a structured light beam carrying orbital angular momentum. Different dynamical regimes are theoretically derived and experimentally demonstrated, depending on the anisotropy effects imposed by the nonlinear medium. In a weakly anisotropic regime, fine-tuning of the orbital angular momentum transfer is obtained by adjusting the crystal parameters. Under strong anisotropy, orbital angular momentum transfer is not possible and a sharp dynamical behavior is observed, with abrupt switching between different transverse modes.

Astigmatic tomography of orbital angular momentum superpositions

We use astigmatic transformations to characterize two-dimensional superpositions of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) states in laser beams. We propose two methods for doing this, both relying only on astigmatic transformations, viewed as rotations on the Poincaré sphere, followed by imaging. These methods can be used as a tomographic tool for communication protocols based on optical vortices.

Conditions for optical parametric oscillation with structured light pump

We investigate the transverse mode structure of the down-converted beams generated by a type-II optical parametric oscillator (OPO) driven by a structured pump. Our analysis focus on the selection rules imposed by the spatial overlap between the transverse modes of the three fields involved in the non-linear interaction. These rules imply a hierarchy of oscillation thresholds that determine the possible transverse modes generated by the OPO, as remarkably confirmed with experimental results.

Contextuality in spin-orbit laser modes

We experimentally observed the violation of Kujula-Dzhafarov noncontextuality inequalities by non-separable spin-orbit laser modes. Qubits are encoded on polarization and transverse modes of an intense laser beam. A spin-orbit non-separable mode was produced by means of a radial polarization converter (S-plate). The results show that contextuality can be investigated by using spin-orbit modes in a simple way, corroborating recent works stating that such system can emulate single-photon experiments. Additionally, an improvement in the non-separable mode preparation allowed us to observe a greater violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for such system. The results are in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions of quantum mechanics.

Experimental investigation of enviroment--induced entanglement using an all--optical setup

We investigate the generation of entanglement between two non interacting qubits coupled to a common reservoir. An experimental setup was conceived to encode one qubit on the polarization of an optical beam and another qubit on its transverse mode. The action of the reservoir is implemented as conditional operations on these two qubits, controlled by the longitudinal path as an ancillary degree of freedom. An entanglement witness and the two-qubit concurrence are easily evaluated from direct intensity measurements showing an excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Intrinsic bounds of a two-qudit random evolution

We investigate entangled qudits evolving under random, local $SU(d)$ operations and demonstrate that this evolution is constrained by intrinsic bounds, showing robust features of two-qudit entangled states that can be useful for fault tolerant implementations of phase gates. Our analytical results are supported by numerical simulations and confirmed by experiments on liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance qubits.

Experimental observation of fractional topological phases with photonic qudits

Geometrical and topological phases play a fundamental role in quantum theory. Geometric phases have been proposed as a tool for implementing unitary gates for quantum computation. A fractional topological phase has been recently discovered for bipartite systems. The dimension of the Hilbert space determines the topological phase of entangled qudits under local unitary operations. Here we investigate fractional topological phases acquired by photonic entangled qudits. Photon pairs prepared as spatial qudits are operated inside a Sagnac interferometer and the two-photon interference pattern reveals the topological phase as fringes shifts when local operations are performed. Dimensions $d = 2, 3$ and $4$ were tested, showing the expected theoretical values.

Two-qudit topological phase evolution under dephasing

In this work, we study a bipartite system composed by a pair of entangled qudits coupled to an environment. Initially, we derive a master equation and show how the dynamics can be restricted to a "diagonal" sector that includes a maximally entangled state (MES). Next, we solve this equation for mixed qutrit pairs and analyze the $I$-concurrence $C(t)$ for the effective state, which is needed to compute the geometric phase when the initial state is pure. Unlike (locally operated) isolated systems, the coupled system leads to a nontrivial time-dependence, with $C(t)$ generally decaying to zero at asymptotic times. However, when the initial condition gets closer to a MES state, the effective concurrence is more protected against the effects of decoherence, signaling a transition to an effective two-qubit MES state at asymptotic times. This transition is also observed in the geometric phase evolution, computed in the kinematic approach. Finally, we explore the system-environment coupling parameter space and show the existence of a Weyl symmetry among the various physical quantities.

Correlations in Electrically Coupled Chaotic Lasers

We show how two electrically coupled semiconductor lasers having optical feedback can present simultaneous anti-phase correlated fast power fluctuations, and strong in-phase synchronized spikes of chaotic power drops. This quite counter intuitive phenomenon is demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by numerical solutions of a deterministic dynamical system of rate equations. The occurrence of negative and positive cross correlation between parts of a complex system according to time scales, as proved in our simple arrangement, is relevant for the understanding and characterization of collective properties in complex networks.

Tripartite non-separability in classical optics

It is possible to prepare classical optical beams which cannot be characterized by a tensor product of vectors describing each of their degrees of freedom. Here we report the experimental creation of such a non-separable, tripartite GHZ-like state of path, polarization and transverse modes of a classical laser beam. We use a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an additional mirror and other optical elements to perform measurements that violate Mermin's inequality. This demonstration of a classical optical analogue of tripartite entanglement paves the path to novel optical applications inspired by multipartite quantum information protocols.

Spin-orbit mode transfer via a classical analog of quantum teleportation

We translate the quantum teleportation protocol into a sequence of coherent operations involving three degrees of freedom of a classical laser beam. The protocol, which we demonstrate experimentally, transfers the polarisation state of the input beam to the transverse mode of the output beam. The role of quantum entanglement is played by a non-separable mode describing the path and transverse degrees of freedom. Our protocol illustrates the possibility of new optical applications based on this intriguing classical analogue of quantum entanglement.

Quantum and classical separability of spin-orbit laser modes

In this work we investigate the quantum noise properties of polarization vortices in connection with an intensity based Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for their spin-orbit separability. We evaluate the inequality for different input quantum states and the corresponding intensity fluctuations. The roles played by coherence and photon number squeezing provide a suitable framework for characterizing pure state spin-orbit entanglement. Structural inseparability of the spin-orbit mode requires coherence, an issue concerning either classical or quantum descriptions. In both cases, it can be witnessed by violation of this intensity based CHSH inequality. However, in the quantum domain, entanglement requires both coherence and reduced photon number fluctuations.
