Nonlinear electrokinetics in nematic electrolytes

In this article we study a system of nonlinear PDEs modelling the electrokinetics of a nematic electrolyte material consisting of various ions species contained in a nematic liquid crystal. The evolution is described by a system coupling a Nernst-Planck system for the ions concentrations with a Maxwell's equation of electrostatics governing the evolution of the electrostatic potential, a Navier-Stokes equation for the velocity field, and a non-smooth Allen-Cahn type equation for the nematic director field. We focus on the two-species case and prove apriori estimates that provide a weak sequential stability result, the main step towards proving the existence of weak solutions.

On a hyperbolic system arising in liquid crystals modeling

We consider a model of liquid crystals, based on a nonlinear hyperbolic system of differential equations, that represents an inviscid version of the model proposed by Qian and Sheng. A new concept of dissipative solution is proposed, for which a global-in-time existence theorem is shown. The dissipative solutions enjoy the following properties: (i) they exist globally in time for any finite energy initial data; (ii) dissipative solutions enjoying certain smoothness are classical solutions; (iii) a dissipative solution coincides with a strong solution originating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists.

Half-integer point defects in the $Q$-tensor theory of nematic liquid crystals

We investigate prototypical profiles of point defects in two dimensional liquid crystals within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory. Using boundary conditions characteristic of defects of index $k/2$, we find a critical point of the Landau-de Gennes energy that is characterised by a system of ordinary differential equations. In the deep nematic regime, $b^2$ small, we prove that this critical point is the unique global minimiser of the Landau-de Gennes energy. We investigate in greater detail the regime of vanishing elastic constant $L \to 0$, where we obtain three explicit point defect profiles, including the global minimiser.

Asymptotic stability of ground states in 2D nonlinear Schrödinger equation including subcritical cases

We consider a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two space dimensions with an attractive potential. The nonlinearity is local but rather general encompassing for the first time both subcritical and supercritical (in $L^2$) nonlinearities. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small initial data, converge to a nonlinear bound state. Therefore, the nonlinear bound states are asymptotically stable. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the time dependent, Hamiltonian, linearized dynamics around a careful chosen one parameter family of bound states that "shadows" the nonlinear evolution of the system. Due to the generality of the methods we develop we expect them to extend to the case of perturbations of large bound states and to other nonlinear dispersive wave type equations.

On the asymptotic stability of bound states in 2D cubic Schroedinger equation

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two space dimensions with an attractive potential. We study the asymptotic stability of the nonlinear bound states, i.e. periodic in time localized in space solutions. Our result shows that all solutions with small, localized in space initial data, converge to the set of bound states. Therefore, the center manifold in this problem is a global attractor. The proof hinges on dispersive estimates that we obtain for the non-autonomous, non-Hamiltonian, linearized dynamics around the bound states.
