The Cepheid Galactic Internet

We propose that a sufficiently advanced civilization may employ Cepheid variable stars as beacons to transmit all-call information throughout the galaxy and beyond. One can construct many scenarios wherein it would be desirable for such a civilization of star ticklers to transmit data to anyone else within viewing range. The beauty of employing Cepheids is that these stars can be seen from afar(we monitor them out through the Virgo cluster), and any developing technological society would seem to be likely to closely observe them as distance markers. Records exist of Cepheids for well over one hundred years. We propose that these (and other regularly variable types of stars) be searched for signs of phase modulation (in the regime of short pulse duration) and patterns, which could be indicative of intentional signaling.

Neutrino Mixing and the Private Higgs

We extend the Private Higgs scenario to account for charged lepton and neutrino masses by introducing a private Higgs field for each lepton family. We analyze a model in which neutrino Majorana masses are radiatively induced. Contrary to previous models the neutrino mass scale ~ 10^{-2} eV is naturally obtained without excessive fine tunings. The model requires the introduction of SU(2) singlet scalar fields, two charged and one neutral. We discuss a possible realization giving a normal neutrino mass hierarchy. Our model fits data and predicts a non-zero V_{e3}.

Does string theory predict an open universe?

It has been claimed that the string landscape predicts an open universe, with negative curvature. The prediction is a consequence of a large number of metastable string vacua, and the properties of the Coleman--De Luccia instanton which describes vacuum tunneling. We examine the robustness of this claim, which is of particular importance since it seems to be one of string theory's few claims to falsifiability. We find that, due to subleading tunneling processes, the prediction is sensitive to unknown properties of the landscape. Under plausible assumptions, universes like ours are as likely to be closed as open.

Geometric Mean Neutrino Mass Relation

Present experimental data from neutrino oscillations have provided much information about the neutrino mixing angles. Since neutrino oscillations only determine the mass squared differences $Δm^2_{ij} = m^2_i - m^2_j$, the absolute values for neutrino masses $m_i$ can not be determined using data just from oscillations. In this work we study implications on neutrino masses from a geometric mean mass relation $m_2=\sqrt{m_1 m_3}$ which enables one to determined the absolute masses of the neutrinos. We find that the central values of the three neutrino masses and their $2σ$ errors to be $m_1 = (1.58\pm 0.18){meV}$, $m_2 = (9.04\pm 0.42){meV}$, and $m_3 = (51.8\pm 3.5){meV}$. Implications for cosmological observation, beta decay and neutrinoless double beta decays are discussed.

Discreteness and the origin of probability in quantum mechanics

Attempts to derive the Born rule, either in the Many Worlds or Copenhagen interpretation, are unsatisfactory for systems with only a finite number of degrees of freedom. In the case of Many Worlds this is a serious problem, since its goal is to account for apparent collapse phenomena, including the Born rule for probabilities, assuming only unitary evolution of the wavefunction. For finite number of degrees of freedom, observers on the vast majority of branches would not deduce the Born rule. However, discreteness of the quantum state space, even if extremely tiny, may restore the validity of the usual arguments.

Minimal Modification To The Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing

Current experimental data on neutrino oscillations are consistent with the tri-bimaximal mixing. If future experimental data will determine a non-zero $V_{e3}$ and/or find CP violations in neutrino oscillations, there is the need to modify the mixing pattern. We find that a simple neutrino mass matrix, resulting from $A_4$ family symmetry breaking with residual $Z_3$ and $Z_2$ discrete symmetries respectively for the Higgs sectors generating the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, can satisfy the required modifications. The neutrino mass matrix is minimally modified with just one additional complex parameter compared with the one producing the tri-bimaximal mixing. In this case, the CP violating Jarlskog factor $J$ has a simple form ($|J|=|V_{e1}V_{e3}|/2\sqrt{3}$ for real neutrino mass matrix), and also $V_{μi} = 1/\sqrt{3}$. We also discuss how this mixing matrix can be tested experimentally.

Topological classification of RNA structures

We present a novel topological classification of RNA secondary structures with pseudoknots. It is based on the topological genus of the circular diagram associated to the RNA base-pair structure. The genus is a positive integer number, whose value quantifies the topological complexity of the folded RNA structure. In such a representation, planar diagrams correspond to pure RNA secondary structures and have zero genus, whereas non planar diagrams correspond to pseudoknotted structures and have higher genus. We analyze real RNA structures from the databases wwPDB and Pseudobase, and classify them according to their topological genus. We compare the results of our statistical survey with existing theoretical and numerical models. We also discuss possible applications of this classification and show how it can be used for identifying new RNA structural motifs.

Message in the Sky

We argue that the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides a stupendous opportunity for the Creator of universe our (assuming one exists) to have sent a message to its occupants, using known physics. Our work does not support the Intelligent Design movement in any way whatsoever, but asks, and attempts to answer, the entirely scientific question of what the medium and message might be IF there was actually a message. The medium for the message is unique. We elaborate on this observation, noting that it requires only careful adjustment of the fundamental Lagrangian, but no direct intervention in the subsequent evolution of the universe.

A schematic model of neutrinos

We show that the observed pattern for neutrino mixing arises naturally if neutrinos are composites of more elementary constituents carrying an SU(2) quantum number we call lepospin.

An Algorithm for RNA Pseudoknots

We further develop the large $ N $ formalism presented by some of us in earlier works in order to recursively calculate the partition function of a singly pseudoknotted RNA. We demonstrate that this calculation takes time proportional to the sixth power of the length of the RNA. The algorithm itself is presented in a self-contained form for the convenience of readers interested in implementing it.

The Topology of Pseudoknotted Homopolymers

We consider the folding of a self-avoiding homopolymer on a lattice, with saturating hydrogen bond interactions. Our goal is to numerically evaluate the statistical distribution of the topological genus of pseudoknotted configurations. The genus has been recently proposed for classifying pseudoknots (and their topological complexity) in the context of RNA folding. We compare our results on the distribution of the genus of pseudoknots, with the theoretical predictions of an existing combinatorial model for an infinitely flexible and stretchable homopolymer. We thus obtain that steric and geometric constraints considerably limit the topological complexity of pseudoknotted configurations, as it occurs for instance in real RNA molecules. We also analyze the scaling properties at large homopolymer length, and the genus distributions above and below the critical temperature between the swollen phase and the compact-globule phase, both in two and three dimensions.

Is Hilbert space discrete?

We show that discretization of spacetime naturally suggests discretization of Hilbert space itself. Specifically, in a universe with a minimal length (for example, due to quantum gravity), no experiment can exclude the possibility that Hilbert space is discrete. We give some simple examples involving qubits and the Schrodinger wavefunction, and discuss implications for quantum information and quantum gravity.

A steepest descent calculation of RNA pseudoknots

We enumerate possible topologies of pseudoknots in single-stranded RNA molecules. We use a steepest-descent approximation in the large N matrix field theory, and a Feynman diagram formalism to describe the resulting pseudoknot structure.

Enumeration of RNA structures by Matrix Models

We enumerate the number of RNA contact structures according to their genus, i.e. the topological character of their pseudoknots. By using a recently proposed matrix model formulation for the RNA folding problem, we obtain exact results for the simple case of an RNA molecule with an infinitely flexible backbone, in which any arbitrary pair of bases is allowed. We analyze the distribution of the genus of pseudoknots as a function of the total number of nucleotides along the phosphate-sugar backbone.

Prediction of RNA pseudoknots by Monte Carlo simulations

In this paper we consider the problem of RNA folding with pseudoknots. We use a graphical representation in which the secondary structures are described by planar diagrams. Pseudoknots are identified as non-planar diagrams. We analyze the non-planar topologies of RNA structures and propose a classification of RNA pseudoknots according to the minimal genus of the surface on which the RNA structure can be embedded. This classification provides a simple and natural way to tackle the problem of RNA folding prediction in presence of pseudoknots. Based on that approach, we describe a Monte Carlo algorithm for the prediction of pseudoknots in an RNA molecule.
