Revisiting Embeddings for Graph Neural Networks

Current graph representation learning techniques use Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to extract features from dataset embeddings. In this work, we examine the quality of these embeddings and assess how changing them can affect the accuracy of GNNs. We explore different embedding extraction techniques for both images and texts; and find that the performance of different GNN architectures is dependent on the embedding style used. We see a prevalence of bag of words (BoW) embeddings and text classification tasks in available graph datasets. Given the impact embeddings has on GNN performance. this leads to a phenomenon that GNNs being optimised for BoW vectors.

Magnetic helicity signature and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures in the solar wind

In a previous paper, we found that proton temperatures are clearly associated with the proton-scale turbulence in the solar wind, and magnetic helicity signature appears to be an important indicator in the association. Based on 15 years of in situ measurements, the present paper further investigates the magnetic helicity of solar wind turbulence and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures. Results show that the presence of the helicity signature is very common in solar wind turbulence at scales $0.3 \lesssim kρ_p \lesssim 1$, with $k$ being the wavenumber and $ρ_p$ the proton gyroradius. The sign of the helicity is mostly positive, indicating the dominance of right-handed polarization of the turbulence. The helicity magnitude usually increases with $k$ and $β_{{\parallel}p}$ (the proton parallel beta) when $kρ_p$ and $β_{{\parallel}p}$ are less than unity. As helicity magnitude increases, the power index of the energy spectrum becomes more negative, and the proton temperatures $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ rise significantly, where $T_{{\perp}p}$ and $T_{{\parallel}p}$ are the perpendicular and parallel temperatures with respect to the background magnetic field. In particular, the rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ is faster than $T_{{\parallel}p}$ when $β_{{\parallel}p} < 1$ is satisfied. The faster rise of $T_{{\perp}p}$ with the helicity magnitude may be interpreted as the result of the preferentially perpendicular heating of solar wind protons by kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) turbulence.

Observational evidence for solar wind proton heating by ion-scale turbulence

Based on in-situ measurements by Wind spacecraft from 2005 to 2015, this letter reports for the first time a clearly scale-dependent connection between proton temperatures and the turbulence in the solar wind. A statistical analysis of proton-scale turbulence shows that increasing helicity magnitudes correspond to steeper magnetic energy spectra. In particular, there exists a positive power-law correlation (with a slope $\sim 0.4$) between the proton perpendicular temperature and the turbulent magnetic energy at scales $0.3 \lesssim kρ_p \lesssim 1$, with $k$ being the wavenumber and $ρ_p$ being the proton gyroradius. These findings present evidence of solar wind heating by the proton-scale turbulence. They also provide insight and observational constraint on the physics of turbulent dissipation in the solar wind.

Effects of alpha-proton differential flow on proton temperature anisotropy instabilities in the solar wind: Wind observations

Plasma kinetic waves and alpha-proton differential flow are two important subjects on the topic of evolution of the solar wind. Based on the Wind data during 2005-2015, this paper reports that the occurrence of electromagnetic cyclotron waves (ECWs) near the proton cyclotron frequency significantly depends on the direction of alpha-proton differential flow Vd. As Vd rotates from anti-Sunward direction to Sunward direction, the occurrence rate of ECWs as well as the percentage of left-handed (LH) polarized ECWs decreases considerably. In particular, it is shown that the dominant polarization changes from LH polarization to right-handed polarization during the rotation. The investigation on proton and alpha particle parameters ordered by the direction of Vd further illustrates that large kinetic energies of alpha-proton differential flow correspond to high occurrence rates of ECWs. These results are well consistent with theoretical predictions for effects of alpha-proton differential flow on proton temperature anisotropy instabilities.

Huygens-Fresnel wavefront tracing in non-uniform media

We present preliminary results on a novel numerical method describing wave propagation in non-uniform media. Following Huygens-Fresnel' principle, we model the wavefront as an array of point sources that emit wavelets, which interfere. We then identify a set of new points where the electric field has equal phase. In fact, without losing generality, we find zeros of the electric field, by means of the bisection method. This obviously corresponds to a specific phase-advance, but is easily generalized, e.g. by phase-shifting all sources. The points found form the new wavefront. One of the advantages of the method is that it includes diffraction. Two examples provided are diffraction around an obstacle and the finite waist of a focused Gaussian beam. Refraction is also successfully modeled, both in slowly-varying media as well as in the presence of discontinuities. The calculations were performed in two dimensions, but can be easily extended to three dimensions. We also discuss the extension to anisotropic, birefringent, absorbing media.

Design, Construction and Testing of the Digital Hadron Calorimeter (DHCAL) Electronics

A novel hadron calorimeter is being developed for future lepton colliding beam detectors. The calorimeter is optimized for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms (PFAs) to the measurement of hadronic jets and features a very finely segmented readout with 1 x 1 cm2 cells. The active media of the calorimeter are Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with a digital, i.e. one-bit, readout. To first order the energy of incident particles in this calorimeter is reconstructed as being proportional to the number of pads with a signal over a given threshold. A large-scale prototype calorimeter with approximately 500,000 readout channels has been built and underwent extensive testing in the Fermilab and CERN test beams. This paper reports on the design, construction, and commissioning of the electronic readout system of this prototype calorimeter. The system is based on the DCAL front-end chip and a VME-based back-end.
