Quasi-universal finite-$T$ scaling in gapped one-dimensional quantum magnets

Temperature dependencies of gap energies and magnon lifetimes are measured in the quasi-1-dimensional S=1/2 gapped quantum magnets IPA-CuCl3 and Sul-Cu2Cl4 using inelastic neutron scattering. The results are compared to those found in literature for S=1 Haldane spin chain materials and to theoretical calculations for the O(3)- and O(N)- quantum non-linear sigma-models. It is found that when the T=0 energy gap Delta is used as the temperature scale, all experimental and theoretical curves are identical to within system-dependent but temperature-independent scaling factors of the order of unity. This quasi-universality extends over a surprising broad T range, at least up to kappa T ~ 1.5 Delta.

Gap excitations in a four-leg Heisenberg spin tube antiferromagnet

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to investigate magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin-liquid system Cu2Cl4 D8C4SO2. Contrary to previously conjectured models that relied on bond-alternating nearest neighbor interactions in the spin chains, the dominant interactions are actually next-nearest-neighbor in-chain antiferromagnetic couplings. The appropriate Heisenberg Hamiltonian is equivalent to that of a S = 1/2 4-leg spin-tube with almost perfect one dimensionality and no bond alternation. A partial geometric frustration of rung interactions induces a small incommensurability of short-range spin correlations.

Dynamics of quantum spin liquid and spin solid phases in IPA-CuCl3 under field

Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering is used to study spin correlations in the quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 in strong applied magnetic fields. A condensation of magnons and commensurate transverse long-range ordering is observe at a critical filed $H_c=9.5$ T. The field dependencies of the energies and polarizations of all magnon branches are investigated both below and above the transition point. Their dispersion is measured across the entire 1D Brillouin zone in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The critical wave vector of magnon spectrum truncation [Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 047210 (2006)] is found to shift from h_c 0.35 at H>H_c. A drastic reduction of magnon bandwidths in the ordered phase [Garlea et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 167202 (2007)] is observed and studied in detail. New features of the spectrum, presumably related to this bandwidth collapse, are observed just above the transition field.

Spin density distribution in a partially magnetized organic quantum magnet

Polarized neutron diffraction experiments on an organic magnetic material reveal a highly skewed distribution of spin density within the magnetic molecular unit. The very large magnitude of the observed effect is due to quantum spin fluctuations. The data are in quantitative agreement with direct diagonalization results for a model spin Hamiltonian, and provide insight on the actual microscopic origin of the relevant exchange interactions.

Excitations from a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons in coupled spin ladders

The weakly coupled quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compound (CH$_3$)$_2$CHNH$_3$CuCl$_3$ is studied by neutron scattering in magnetic fields exceeding the critical field of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Commensurate long-range order and the associated Goldstone mode are detected and found to be similar to those in a reference 3D quantum magnet. However, for the upper two massive magnon branches the observed behavior is totally different, culminating in a drastic collapse of excitation bandwidth beyond the transition point.

Scaling of dynamic spin correlations in BaCu2SiGeO7

The magnetic dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional S = 1/2 chain system BaCu2(Si0.5Ge0.5)2O7 is studied in a wide range of energy transfers and temperatures. Contrary to previous erroneous reports [T. Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 077206 (2004)], the scaling properties observed in the range 0.5-25 meV are found to be fully consistent with expectations for a Luttinger spin liquid. At higher energies, a breakdown of scaling laws is observed and attributed to lattice effects. The results are complementary to those found in literature for other S = 1/2-chain compounds, such as KCuF3 and Cu-benzoate.

Erratum: Dynamics and scaling in a quantum spin chain material with bond randomness

Follow-up neutron measurements, performed on a sample much larger than the one used in the original study, show that in the energy range 0.5-45 meV the magnetic excitations in BaCu2SiGeO7 are indistinguishable from those in conventional (disorder-free) quantum S=1/2 chains. Scrutinizing the previous data, we found that the analysis was affected by a poorly identified structured background and an additional technical mistake in the data reduction.

Low-energy excitations in the magnetized state of the bond-alternating quantum S=1 chain system NTENP

High intensity inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 (NTENP) are performed in magnetic fields of up to 14.8~T. Excitation in the high field magnetized quantum spin solid (ordered) phase are investigated. In addition to the previously observed coherent long-lived gap excitation [M. Hagiwara et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 94, 177202 (2005)], a broad continuum is detected at lower energies. This observation is consistent with recent numerical studies, and helps explain the suppression of the lowest-energy gap mode in the magnetized state of NTENP. Yet another new feature of the excitation spectrum is found at slightly higher energies, and appears to be some kind of multi-magnon state.

Dynamics of composite Haldane spin chains in IPA-CuCl3

Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is interpreted in terms of ``composite'' Haldane spin chains. The key difference from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a certain critical wave vector.

Neutron Scattering Study of Quantum Phase Transitions in Integral Spin Chains

Quite a few low-dimensional magnets are quantum-disordered ``spin liquids'' with a characteristic gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. Among these are antiferromagnetic chains of integer quantum spins. Their generic feature are long-lived massive (gapped) excitations (magnons) that are subject to Zeeman splitting in external magnetic fields. The gap in one of the magnon branches decreases with field, driving a soft-mode quantum phase transition. The system then enters a qualitatively new high-field phase. The actual properties at high fields, particularly the spin dynamics, critically depend on the system under consideration. Recent neutron scattering studies of organometallic polymer crystals NDMAP (Haldane spin chains with anisotropy) and NTENP (dimerized S=1 chains) revealed rich and unique physics.

IPA-CuCl$_3$: a S=1/2 Ladder with Ferromagnetic Rungs

The spin gap material IPA-CuCl3 has been extensively studied as a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bondalternating S = 1/2 chain. This description of the system was derived from structural considerations and bulk measurements. New inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a totally different picture: IPA-CuCl3 consists of weakly coupled spin ladders with antiferromagnetic legs and ferromagnetic rungs. The ladders run perpendicular to the originally supposed bondalternating chain direction. The ferromagnetic rungs make this system equivalent to a Haldane S = 1 antiferromagnet. With a gap energy of 1.17(1) meV, a zone-boundary energy of 4.1(1) meV, and almost no magnetic anisotropy, IPA-CuCl3 may the best Haldane-gap material yet, in terms of suitability for neutron scattering studies in high magnetic fields.

Magnetic excitations in weakly coupled spin dimers and chains material Cu2Fe2Ge4O13

Magnetic excitations in a weakly coupled spin dimers and chains compound Cu2Fe2Ge4O13 are measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Both structure factors and dispersion of low energy excitations up to 10 meV energy transfer are well described by a semiclassical spin wave theory involving interacting Fe$^{3+}$ ($S = 5/2$) chains. Additional dispersionless excitations are observed at higher energies, at $\hbar ω= 24$ meV, and associated with singlet-triplet transitions within Cu$^{2+}$-dimers. Both types of excitations can be understood by treating weak interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ subsystems at the level of the Mean Field/ Random Phase Approximation. However, this simple model fails to account for the measured temperature dependence of the 24 meV mode.

Spin excitations under fields in an anisotropic bond-alternating quantum S=1 chain: contrast with Haldane spin chains

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet Ni(C9D24N4)(NO2)ClO4 have been performed under magnetic fields below and above a critical field Hc at which the energy gap closes. Normal field dependece of Zeeman splitting of the excited triplet modes below Hc has been observed, but the highest mode is unusually small and smears out with increasing field. This can be explained by an interaction with a low-lying two magnon continuum at q=pi that is present in dimerized chains but absent in uniform ones. Above Hc, we find only one excited mode, in stark contrast with three massive excitations previously observed in the structurally similar Haldane-gap material NDMAP [A. Zheludev et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 134438 (2003)].

Spin waves and magnetic interactions in LiCu2O2

The quasi-one-dimensional helimagnet LiCu2O2 was studied by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering. The dispersion relation of spin wave excitations was measured in the vicinity of the principal magnetic Bragg reflection. A spin wave theoretical analysis of the data yields an estimate of the relevant exchange constants and explains the mechanism of geometric frustration that leads to helimagnetism. It is found that the simple antiferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model that was previously proposed is inadequate for LiCu2O2. The experimental findings are generally in a qualitative agreement with first principal calculations of [A. A. Gippius et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 70}, 020406 (2004)], though certain important discrepancies remain to be explained.

Reply to Comment on "Competition between helimagnetism and commensurate quantum spin correlations in LiCu2O2"

Exchanged interactions in recently observed helical structure in LiCu2O2 is probed by inelastic neutron scattering. The main conlusions of Refs. [1,2] are confirmed: nn interactions in single chains are ferromagnetic and frustrated by nnn antiferromagnetic ones. However, in apparent disagreement with Refs. [1,2] double-chain interactions are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the single-chain ones, and thus involved in the frustration mechanism. [1] Drechsler et al., cond-mat/0411418. [2] A. Half-ordered state in the anisotropic Haldane-gap antiferromagnet NDMAP

Neutron diffraction experiments performed on the Haldane gap material NDMAP in high magnetic fields applied at an angle to the principal anisotropy axes reveal two consecutive field-induced phase transitions. The low-field phase is the gapped Haldane state, while at high fields the system exhibits 3-dimensional long-range Neel order. In a peculiar phase found at intermediate fields only half of all the spin chains participate in the long-range ordering, while the other half remains disordered and gapped.

Cooperative ordering of gapped and gapless spin networks in Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$

The unusual magnetic properties of a novel low-dimensional quantum ferrimagnet Cu$_2$Fe$_2$Ge$_4$O$_{13}$ are studied using bulk methods, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. It is shown that this material can be described in terms of two low-dimensional quantum spin subsystems, one gapped and the other gapless, characterized by two distinct energy scales. Long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperatures is a cooperative phenomenon caused by weak coupling of these two spin networks.

Anomalous percolation and quantum criticality in diluted rare-earth nickelates

A microscopic model for the diluted spin-mixed compounds (R_xY_(1-x))_2BaNiO_5 (R=magnetic rare-earth) is studied using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). The ordering temperature is shown to be a universal function of the impurity concentration x and the intrinsic Ni-chain correlation length. An effective model for the critical modes is derived. The possibility of a quantum critical point driven by the rare earth-concentration and the existence of a Griffiths phase in the high dilution limit is investigated. Several possible experimental approaches to verify the results are put forward.
