Gravitational potentials and forces in the Lattice Universe: a slab

We study the effect of the slab topology $T\times R\times R$ of the Universe on the form of gravitational potentials and forces created by point-like masses. We obtain two alternative forms of solutions: one is based on the Fourier series expansion of the delta function using the periodical property along the toroidal dimension, and another one is derived by direct summation of solutions of the Helmholtz equation for the source particle and all its images. The latter one takes the form of the sum of Yukawa-type potentials. We demonstrate that for the present Universe the latter solution is preferable for numerical calculations since it requires less terms of the series to achieve the necessary precision.

Predicting transitions in cooperation levels from network connectivity

Networks determine our social circles and the way we cooperate with others. We know that topological features like hubs and degree assortativity affect cooperation, and we know that cooperation is favoured if the benefit of the altruistic act divided by the cost exceeds the average number of neighbours. However, a simple rule that would predict cooperation transitions on an arbitrary network has not yet been presented. Here we show that the unique sequence of degrees in a network can be used to predict at which game parameters major shifts in the level of cooperation can be expected, including phase transitions from absorbing to mixed strategy phases. We use the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game on random and scale-free networks to demonstrate the prediction, as well as its limitations and possible pitfalls. We observe good agreements between the predictions and the results obtained with concurrent and Monte Carlo methods for the update of the strategies, thus providing a simple and fast way to estimate the outcome of evolutionary social dilemmas on arbitrary networks without the need of actually playing the game.

Dark Energy: Observational Evidence and Theoretical Models

The book elucidates the current state of the dark energy problem and presents the results of the authors, who work in this area. It describes the observational evidence for the existence of dark energy, the methods and results of constraining of its parameters, modeling of dark energy by scalar fields, the space-times with extra spatial dimensions, especially Kaluza---Klein models, the braneworld models with a single extra dimension as well as the problems of positive definition of gravitational energy in General Relativity, energy conditions and consequences of their violation in the presence of dark energy. This monograph is intended for science professionals, educators and graduate students, specializing in general relativity, cosmology, field theory and particle physics.

Dynamical dark energy from extra dimensions

We consider multidimensional cosmological model with a higher-dimensional product manifold M = R x R^{d_0} x H^{d_1}/Γwhere R^{d_0} is d_0-dimensional Ricci-flat external (our) space and H^{d_1}/Γis d_1-dimensional compact hyperbolic internal space. M2-brane solution for this model has the stage of accelerating expansion of the external space. We apply this model to explain the late time acceleration of our Universe. Recent observational data (the Hubble parameter at the present time and the redshift when the deceleration parameter changes its sign) fix fully all free parameters of the model. As a result, we find that considered model has too big size of the internal space at the present time and variation of the effective four-dimensional fine structure constant strongly exceeds the observational limits.

Multidimensional cosmological models: cosmological and astrophysical implications and constraints

We investigate four-dimensional effective theories which are obtained by dimensional reduction of multidimensional cosmological models with factorizable geometry and consider the interaction between conformal excitations of the internal space (geometrical moduli excitations) and Abelian gauge fields. It is assumed that the internal space background can be stabilized by minima of an effective potential. The conformal excitations over such a background have the form of massive scalar fields (gravitational excitons) propagating in the external spacetime. We discuss cosmological and astrophysical implications of the interaction between gravexcitons and four-dimensional photons as well as constraints arising on multidimensional models of the type considered in our paper. In particular, we show that due to the experimental bounds on the variation of the fine structure constant, gravexcitons should decay before nucleosynthesis starts. For a successful nucleosynthesis the masses of the decaying gravexcitons should be m>10^4 GeV. Furthermore, we discuss the possible contribution of gravexcitons to UHECR. It is shown that, at energies of about 10^{20}eV, the decay length of gravexcitons with masses m>10^4 GeV is very small, but that for m <10^2 GeV it becomes much larger than the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cut-off distance. Finally, we investigate the possibility for gravexciton-photon oscillations in strong magnetic fields of astrophysical objects. The corresponding estimates indicate that even the high magnetic field strengths of magnetars are not sufficient for an efficient and copious production of gravexcitons.

Nonlinear multidimensional cosmological models with form fields: stabilization of extra dimensions and the cosmological constant problem

We consider multidimensional gravitational models with a nonlinear scalar curvature term and form fields in the action functional. In our scenario it is assumed that the higher dimensional spacetime undergoes a spontaneous compactification to a warped product manifold. Particular attention is paid to models with quadratic scalar curvature terms and a Freund-Rubin-like ansatz for solitonic form fields. It is shown that for certain parameter ranges the extra dimensions are stabilized. In particular, stabilization is possible for any sign of the internal space curvature, the bulk cosmological constant and of the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant. Moreover, the effective cosmological constant can satisfy the observable limit on the dark energy density. Finally, we discuss the restrictions on the parameters of the considered nonlinear models and how they follow from the connection between the D-dimensional and the four-dimensional fundamental mass scales.

Topological defect brane-world models

5-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic models with a bulk cosmological constant and a minimally coupled scalar field are considered. We have found that in special cases the scalar field can mimic a frustrated (i.e. disordered) networks of topological defects: cosmic strings, domain walls and hyperdomain walls. This equivalence enabled us to obtain 5-dimensional instantonic solutions which can be used to construct brane-world models. In some cases, their analytic continuation to a Lorentzian metric signature give rise to either 4-dimensional flat or inflating branes. Models with arbitrary dimensions (D $>$ 5) are also briefly discussed.

Multidimensional cosmology and asymptotical AdS

A non-linear gravitational model with a multidimensional geometry and quadratic scalar curvature is considered. For certain parameter ranges, the extra dimensions are stabilized if the internal spaces have negative curvature. As a consequence, the 4-dimensional effective cosmological constant as well as the bulk cosmological constant become negative. The homogeneous and isotropic external space is asymptotically AdS. The connection between the D-dimensional and the 4-dimensional fundamental mass scales sets an additional restriction on the parameters of the considered non-linear models.

On new gravitational instantons describing creation of brane-worlds

By considering 5--dimensional cosmological models with a bulk filled with a pressureless scalar field; equivalently dust matter, and a negative cosmological constant, we have found a regular instantonic solution which is free from any singularity at the origin of the extra--coordinate. This instanton describes 5--dimensional asymptotically anti de Sitter wormhole, when the bulk has a topology R times S^4. Compactified brane-world instantons which are built up from such instantonic solution describe either a single brane or a string of branes. Their analytical continuation to the pseudo--Riemannian metric can give rise to either 4-dimensional inflating branes or solutions with the same dynamical behaviour for extra--dimension and branes, in addition to multitemporal solutions. Dust brane-world models with arbitrary dimensions (D >= 5) as well as other spatial topologies are also briefly discussed.

Restrictions on dilatonic brane-world models

We consider dilatonic brane-world models with a non-minimal coupling between a dilaton and usual matter on a brane. We demonstrate that variation of the fundamental constants on the brane due to such interaction leads to strong restrictions on parameters of models. In particular, the experimental bounds on variation of the fine structure constant rule out non-minimal dilatonic models with a Liouville-type coupling potential f(varphi) = exp (b varphi) where b is order of 1.

Asymptotical AdS from non-linear gravitational models with stabilized extra dimensions

We consider non-linear gravitational models with a multidimensional warped product geometry. Particular attention is payed to models with quadratic scalar curvature terms. It is shown that for certain parameter ranges, the extra dimensions are stabilized if the internal spaces have negative constant curvature. In this case, the 4-dimensional effective cosmological constant as well as the bulk cosmological constant become negative. As a consequence, the homogeneous and isotropic external space is asymptotically AdS. The connection between the D-dimensional and the 4-dimensional fundamental mass scales sets a restriction on the parameters of the considered non-linear models.

Generalized de Sitter solution in multidimensional cosmology with static internal spaces

A multidimensional cosmological model with space-time consisting of n (n>1) Einstein spaces M_i is investigated in the presence of a cosmological constant Lambda and a homogeneous minimally coupled free scalar field. Generalized de Sitter solution was found for Lambda > 0 and Ricci-flat external space for the case of static internal spaces with fine tuning of parameters.

Perfect fluid brane-world model

By considering 5--dimensional cosmological models with a bulk filled with a perfect fluid and a cosmological constant, we have found regular instantonic solution which is free from any singularity at the origin of the extra--coordinate and describe 5--dimensional asymptotically anti de Sitter wormhole, when the bulk has a topology $ R \times S^4 $ and is filled with dust and a negative cosmological constant. Dust brane-world models with other spatial topologies are also considered.

Comments on conformal stability of brane-world models

The stability of 5-D brane-world models under conformal perturbations is investigated. The analysis is carried out in the general case and then it is applied to particular solutions. It is shown that models with the Poincare and the de Sitter branes are unstable because they have negative mass squared of gravexcitons whereas models with the Anti de Sitter branes have positive gravexciton mass squared and are stable. It is also shown that 4-D effective cosmological and gravitational constants on branes as well as gravexciton masses undergo hierarchy: they have different values on different branes.

Comment on stability of atoms and nuclei in multidimensional TeV scale gravity

We discuss the stability of atoms and nucleons in the presence of multidimensional gravity characterized by the unified energy scale 1TeV. We point out that the multidimensional gravitational attraction can create additional bound states deep inside of atomic and nucleon constituents. These states would be characterized by sizes comparable to the TeV scale distance. We show that shallow gravity induced bound states between an electron and a quark are ruled out, because collapse processes in atoms to such bound states would occur on time scales which are in contradiction to current data on the stability of ordinary matter. The gravitational attraction may also produce diquark states, which should be considered in addition to those discussed in the literature. The estimates indicate that, for TeV scale gravity, the problem of UV divergencies and UV renormalization is crucial. Some universal renormalization mechanism should exist, which stabilizes atoms in the presence of multidimensional gravity.

Gravitational Excitons as Dark Matter

In earlier work it was pointed out that for warped product spacetimes the conformal (geometrical moduli) excitations of the internal compactified factor spaces should be observable as massive scalar fields in the external spacetime. Here we show that these scalar fields (gravitational excitons) describe weakly interacting particles and can be considered as dark matter component. Masses of the gravexcitons are defined by the form of the effective potential of the theory and the stabilization scales of the internal space. This implies that different stabilization scales result in different types of DM. An essential role is played by the effective potential. On the one hand, its minima fix possible stabilization scales of the internal spaces; on the other hand, they provide possible values for the effective cosmological constant.

A note on dynamical stabilization of internal spaces in multidimensional cosmology

The possibility of dynamical stabilization of an internal space is investigated for a multidimensional cosmological model with minimal coupled scalar field as inflaton. It is shown that a successful dynamical compactification crucially depends on the type of interaction between the geometrical modulus field and the inflaton and its decay products. In the considered model a stable compactification can be ensured via trapping of the modulus field by a minimum of the effective potential.

Stabilization of internal spaces in multidimensional cosmology

Effective 4-dimensional theories are investigated which were obtained under dimensional reduction of multidimensional cosmological models with a minimal coupled scalar field as matter source. Conditions for the internal space stabilization are considered and the possibility for inflation in the external space is discussed. The electroweak as well as the Planck fundamental scale approaches are investigated and compared with each other. It is shown that there exists a rescaling for the effective cosmological constant as well as for gravitational exciton masses in the different approaches.
