Adiabatic regularization with a Yukawa interaction

We extend the adiabatic regularization method for an expanding universe to include the Yukawa interaction between quantized Dirac fermions and a homogeneous background scalar field. We give explicit expressions for the renormalized expectation values of the stress-energy tensor $\langle T_{μν} \rangle$ and the bilinear $\langle \barψψ\rangle$ in a spatially flat FLRW spacetime. These are basic ingredients in the semiclassical field equations of fermionic matter in curved spacetime interacting with a background scalar field. The ultraviolet subtracting terms of the adiabatic regularization can be naturally interpreted as coming from appropriate counterterms of the background fields. We fix the required covariant counterterms. To test our approach we determine the contribution of the Yukawa interaction to the conformal anomaly in the massless limit and show its consistency with the heat kernel method using the effective action.

Electromagnetic duality anomaly in curved spacetimes

The source-free Maxwell action is invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in arbitrary spacetimes. This leads to a conserved classical Noether charge. We show that this conservation law is broken at the quantum level in presence of a background classical gravitational field with a non-trivial Chern-Pontryagin invariant, in a parallel way to the chiral anomaly for massless Dirac fermions. Among the physical consequences, the net polarization of the quantum electromagnetic field is not conserved.

Rational group algebras of finite groups: from idempotents to units of integral group rings

We give an explicit and character-free construction of a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents of a rational group algebra of a finite nilpotent group and a full description of the Wedderburn decomposition of such algebras. An immediate consequence is a well-known result of Roquette on the Schur indices of the simple components of group algebras of finite nilpotent groups. As an application, we obtain that the unit group of the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite nilpotent group $G$ has a subgroup of finite index that is generated by three nilpotent groups for which we have an explicit description of their generators. Another application is a new construction of free subgroups in the unit group. In all the constructions dealt with, pairs of subgroups $(H,K)$, called strong Shoda pairs, and explicit constructed central elements $e(G,H,K)$ play a crucial role. For arbitrary finite groups we prove that the primitive central idempotents of the rational group algebras are rational linear combinations of such $e(G,H,K)$, with $(H,K)$ strong Shoda pairs in subgroups of $G$.
