Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and multiple $b$-jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via third-generation squarks into the lightest neutralino ($\displaystyle\tildeχ^0_1$) is reported. It uses LHC proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The search is performed in events containing large missing transverse momentum and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as originating from $b$-quarks. To increase the sensitivity, the sample is divided into subsamples based on the presence or absence of electrons or muons. No excess is found above the predicted background. For $\displaystyle\tildeχ^0_1$ masses below approximately 300 GeV, gluino masses of less than 1.97 (1.92) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level in simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos that decay via top (bottom) squarks. An interpretation of the limits in terms of the branching ratios of the gluinos into third-generation squarks is also provided. These results improve upon the exclusion limits obtained with the 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected in 2015.

Search for Higgs boson decays to beyond-the-Standard-Model light bosons in four-lepton events with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search is conducted for a new beyond-the-Standard-Model boson using events where a Higgs boson with mass 125 GeV decays to four leptons ($\ell =$ $e$ or $μ$). This decay is presumed to occur via an intermediate state which contains one or two on-shell, promptly decaying bosons: $H\rightarrow ZX/XX \rightarrow 4\ell$, where $X$ is a new vector boson $Z_d$ or pseudoscalar $a$ with mass between 1 and 60 GeV. The search uses $pp$ collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. No significant excess of events above Standard Model background predictions is observed; therefore, upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on model-independent fiducial cross-sections, and on the Higgs boson decay branching ratios to vector and pseudoscalar bosons in two benchmark models.

Measurement of inclusive jet and dijet cross-sections in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive jet and dijet cross-sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measurement uses a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ recorded in 2015 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Jets are identified using the anti-${k_t}$ algorithm with a radius parameter value of $R=0.4$. The inclusive jet cross-sections are measured double-differentially as a function of the jet transverse momentum, covering the range from 100 GeV to 3.5 TeV, and the absolute jet rapidity up to $|y|=3$. The double-differential dijet production cross-sections are presented as a function of the dijet mass, covering the range from 300 GeV to 9 TeV, and the half absolute rapidity separation between the two leading jets within $|y|<3$, $y*$, up to $y*=3$. Next-to-leading-order, and next-to-next-to-leading-order for the inclusive jet measurement, perturbative QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative and electroweak effects are compared to the measured cross-sections.

Search for pair production of up-type vector-like quarks and for four-top-quark events in final states with multiple $b$-jets with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of up-type vector-like quarks ($T$) with a significant branching ratio into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a $Z$ boson is presented. The same analysis is also used to search for four-top-quark production in several new physics scenarios. The search is based on a dataset of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$. Data are analysed in the lepton+jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon with high transverse momentum, large missing transverse momentum and multiple jets, as well as the jets+$E_{T}^{miss}$ final state, characterised by multiple jets and large missing transverse momentum. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets identified as originating from $b$-quarks, and the presence of boosted, hadronically decaying top quarks and Higgs bosons reconstructed as large-radius jets, characteristic of signal events. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross sections for the different signal processes considered. These cross-section limits are used to derive lower limits on the mass of a vector-like $T$ quark under several branching ratio hypotheses assuming contributions from $T \rightarrow Wb$, $Zt$, $Ht$ decays. The 95% CL observed lower limits on the $T$ quark mass range between 0.99 TeV and 1.43 TeV for all possible values of the branching ratios into the three decay modes considered, significantly extending the reach beyond that of previous searches. Additionally, upper limits on anomalous four-top-quark production are set in the context of an effective field theory model, as well as in an universal extra dimensions model.

Search for lepton-flavor violation in different-flavor, high-mass final states in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for a heavy particle decaying into different-flavor, dilepton pairs ($eμ$, $eτ$ or $μτ$), using 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected in 2015-2016 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excesses over the Standard Model predictions are observed. Bayesian lower limits at the 95% credibility level are placed on the mass of a $Z^{\prime}$ boson, the mass of a supersymmetric $τ$-sneutrino, and on the threshold mass for quantum black-hole production. For the $Z^{\prime}$ and sneutrino models, upper cross-section limits are converted to upper limits on couplings, which are compared with similar limits from low-energy experiments and which are more stringent for the $eτ$ and $μτ$ modes

Search for Higgs boson decays into pairs of light (pseudo)scalar particles in the $γγjj$ final state in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents a search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of new (pseudo)scalar particles, $H\to aa$, where the $a$ particle has a mass in the range 20-60 GeV, and where one of the $a$ bosons decays into a pair of photons and the other to a pair of gluons. The search is performed in event samples enhanced in vector-boson fusion Higgs boson production by requiring two jets with large invariant mass in addition to the Higgs boson candidate decay products. The analysis is based on the full dataset of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.7 fb$^{-1}$. The data are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is placed on the production cross section times the branching ratio for the decay $H\to aa\to γγgg$. This limit ranges from 3.1 pb to 9.0 pb depending on the mass of the $a$ boson.

Search for photonic signatures of gauge-mediated supersymmetry in 13 TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for photonic signatures, motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. This search makes use of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and it explores models dominated by both strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric partner states. Experimental signatures incorporating an isolated photon and significant missing transverse momentum are explored. These signatures include events with an additional photon or additional jet activity not associated with any specific underlying quark flavor. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction, and 95% confidence-level upper limits of between 0.083 fb and 0.32 fb are set on the visible cross section of contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. These results are interpreted in terms of lower limits on the masses of gluinos, squarks, and gauginos in the context of generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry, which reach as high as 2.3 TeV for strongly produced and 1.3 TeV for weakly produced supersymmetric partner pairs.

Search for squarks and gluinos in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum using 36 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV $pp$ collision data with the ATLAS detector

A search for the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons (squarks and gluinos) in final states containing hadronic jets and missing transverse momentum, but no electrons or muons, is presented. The data used in this search were recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS experiment in $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV proton--proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$. The results are interpreted in the context of various models where squarks and gluinos are pair-produced and the neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95\% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 2.03 TeV for a simplified model incorporating only a gluino and the lightest neutralino, assuming the lightest neutralino is massless. For a simplified model involving the strong production of mass-degenerate first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 1.55 TeV are excluded if the lightest neutralino is massless. These limits substantially extend the region of supersymmetric parameter space previously excluded by searches with the ATLAS detector.

Measurement of the inclusive and fiducial $t\bar{t}$ production cross-sections in the lepton+jets channel in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The inclusive and fiducial $t\bar{t}$ production cross-sections are measured in the lepton+jets channel using 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Major systematic uncertainties due to the modelling of the jet energy scale and $b$-tagging efficiency are constrained by separating selected events into three disjoint regions. In order to reduce systematic uncertainties in the most important background, the W+jets process is modelled using Z+jets events in a data-driven approach. The inclusive $t\bar{t}$ cross-section is measured with a precision of 5.7% to be $σ_{\text{inc}}(t\bar{t})$ = 248.3 $\pm$ 0.7 (stat.) $\pm$ 13.4 (syst.) $\pm$ 4.7 (lumi.) pb, assuming a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The cross-section is also measured in a phase space close to that of the selected data. The fiducial cross-section is $σ_{\text{fid}}(t\bar{t})$ = 48.8 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat.) $\pm$ 2.0 (syst.) $\pm$ 0.9 (lumi.) pb with a precision of 4.5%.

Observation of centrality-dependent acoplanarity for muon pairs produced via two-photon scattering in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents a measurement of $γγ\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-}$ production in Pb+Pb collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 0.49 nb$^{-1}$. The azimuthal angle and transverse momentum correlations between the muons are measured as a function of collision centrality. The muon pairs are produced from $γγ$ through the interaction of the large electromagnetic fields of the nuclei. The contribution from background sources of muon pairs is removed using a template fit method. In peripheral collisions, the muons exhibit a strong back-to-back correlation consistent with previous measurements of muon pair production in ultra-peripheral collisions. The angular correlations are observed to broaden significantly in central collisions. The modifications are qualitatively consistent with rescattering of the muons while passing through the hot matter produced in the collision.

Search for the Decay of the Higgs Boson to Charm Quarks with the ATLAS Experiment

A direct search for the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of charm quarks is presented. Associated production of the Higgs and $Z$ bosons, in the decay mode $ZH\rightarrow \ell^+ \ell^- c \bar{c}$ is studied. A dataset with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is used. The $H\rightarrow c\bar{c}$ signature is identified using charm-tagging algorithms. The observed (expected) upper limit on $σ(pp \rightarrow ZH) \times \mathcal{B}(H \rightarrow c\bar{c})$ is 2.7 ($3.9^{+2.1}_{-1.1}$) pb at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, while the Standard Model value is 26 fb.

Search for a Structure in the $B^0_s π^\pm$ Invariant Mass Spectrum with the ATLAS Experiment

A search for the narrow structure, $X(5568)$, reported by the D0 Collaboration in the decay sequence $X \to B^0_s π^\pm$, $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$, is presented. The analysis is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC corresponding to 4.9 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at 7 TeV and 19.5 fb$^{-1}$ at 8 TeV. No significant signal was found. Upper limits on the number of signal events, with properties corresponding to those reported by D0, and on the $X$ production rate relative to $B^0_s$ mesons, $ρ_X$, were determined at 95% confidence level. The results are $N(X) < 382$ and $ρ_X < 0.015$ for $B^0_s$ mesons with transverse momenta above 10 GeV, and $N(X) < 356$ and $ρ_X < 0.016$ for transverse momenta above 15 GeV. Limits are also set for potential $B^0_s π^\pm$ resonances in the mass range 5550 MeV to 5700 MeV.

Search for long-lived charginos based on a disappearing-track signature in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves the sensitivity to short chargino lifetimes. The results are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of charginos and gluinos for different chargino lifetimes. For a pure wino with a lifetime of about 0.2 ns, chargino masses up to 460 GeV are excluded. For the strong production channel, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded assuming a chargino mass of 460 GeV and lifetime of 0.2 ns.

Search for pair production of heavy vector-like quarks decaying into high-$p_T$ $W$ bosons and top quarks in the lepton-plus-jets final state in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vector-like $B$ quarks, primarily targeting $B$ quark decays into a $W$ boson and a top quark. The search is based on $36.1$ $fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data are analysed in the lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, and multiple jets, of which at least one is $b$-tagged. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed. The 95% confidence level lower limit on the $B$ mass is 1350 GeV assuming a 100% branching ratio to $Wt$. In the SU(2) singlet scenario, the lower mass limit is 1170 GeV. This search is also sensitive to a heavy vector-like $B$ quark decaying into other final states ($Zb$ and $Hb$) and thus mass limits on $B$ production are set as a function of the decay branching ratios. The 100% branching ratio limits are found to be also applicable to heavy vector-like $X$ production, with charge $+$5/3, that decay into $Wt$.

Measurement of the Higgs boson coupling properties in the $H\rightarrow ZZ^{*} \rightarrow 4\ell$ decay channel at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The coupling properties of the Higgs boson are studied in the four-lepton decay channel using 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data from the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. Cross sections are measured for the four key production modes in several exclusive regions of the Higgs boson production phase space and are interpreted in terms of coupling modifiers. The inclusive cross section times branching ratio for $H \rightarrow ZZ^*$ decay and for a Higgs boson absolute rapidity below 2.5 is measured to be $1.73^{+0.24}_{-0.23}$(stat.)$^{+0.10}_{-0.08}$(exp.)$\pm 0.04$(th.) pb compared to the Standard Model prediction of $1.34\pm0.09$ pb. In addition, the tensor structure of the Higgs boson couplings is studied using an effective Lagrangian approach for the description of interactions beyond the Standard Model. Constraints are placed on the non-Standard-Model CP-even and CP-odd couplings to $Z$ bosons and on the CP-odd coupling to gluons.

Search for pair production of heavy vector-like quarks decaying to high-$p_{\text{T}}$ $W$ bosons and $b$ quarks in the lepton-plus-jets final state in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vector-like $T$ and $B$ quarks, primarily targeting the $T$ quark decays to a $W$ boson and a $b$-quark. The search is based on $36.1$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data are analysed in the lepton-plus-jets final state, including at least one $b$-tagged jet and a large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a high-momentum $W$ boson. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed in the reconstructed $T$ mass distribution. The observed 95% confidence level lower limit on the $T$ mass are 1350 GeV assuming 100% branching ratio to $Wb$. In the SU(2) singlet scenario, the lower mass limit is 1170 GeV. This search is also sensitive to a heavy vector-like $B$ quark decaying to $Wt$ and other final states. The results are thus reinterpreted to provide a 95% confidence level lower limit on the $B$ quark mass at 1250 GeV assuming 100% branching ratio to $Wt$; in the SU(2) singlet scenario, the limit is 1080 GeV. Mass limits on both $T$ and $B$ production are also set as a function of the decay branching ratios. The 100% branching ratio limits are found to be applicable to heavy vector-like $Y$ and $X$ production that decay to $Wb$ and $Wt$, respectively.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a $b\bar{b}$ pair in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair, $t\bar{t}H$, is presented. The analysis uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The search targets the $H \to b\bar{b}$ decay mode. The selected events contain either one or two electrons or muons from the top-quark decays, and are then categorized according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain $b$-hadrons. Multivariate techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events, the latter being dominated by $t\bar{t}$ + jets production. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, the ratio of the measured $t\bar{t}H$ signal cross-section to the Standard Model expectation is found to be $μ= 0.84^{+0.64}_{-0.61}$. A value of $μ$ greater than 2.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level while the expected upper limit is $μ< 1.2$ in the absence of a $t\bar{t}H$ signal.

Measurement of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling

A measurement of the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of dijet azimuthal decorrelations is presented, using the quantity $R_{Δϕ}$. The quantity $R_{Δϕ}$ specifies the fraction of the inclusive dijet events in which the azimuthal opening angle of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta is less than a given value of the parameter $Δϕ_\mathrm{max}$. The quantity $R_{Δϕ}$ is measured in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$8 TeV as a function of the dijet rapidity interval, the event total scalar transverse momentum, and $Δϕ_\mathrm{max}$. The measurement uses an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Predictions of a perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling with corrections for non-perturbative effects are compared to the data. The theoretical predictions describe the data in the whole kinematic region. The data are used to determine the strong coupling $α_{\mathrm{S}}$ and to study its running for momentum transfers from 260 GeV to above 1.6 TeV. An analysis that combines data at all momentum transfers results in $α_{\mathrm{S}}(m_{Z}) = 0.1127^{+0.0063}_{-0.0027}$.
