Search for new high-mass phenomena in the dilepton final state using 36 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is conducted for new resonant and non-resonant high-mass phenomena in dielectron and dimuon final states. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data, collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed. Upper limits at 95% credibility level are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for resonances decaying into dileptons, which are converted to lower limits on the resonance mass, up to 4.1 for the E$_{6}$-motivated Z'$_χ$. Lower limits on the $qq \ell\ell$ contact interaction scale are set between 24 TeV and 40 TeV, depending on the model.

Search for heavy Higgs bosons $A/H$ decaying to a top quark pair in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy pseudoscalar ($A$) and scalar ($H$) Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark pair ($t\bar{t}$) has been performed with 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV. Interference effects between the signal process and Standard Model $t\bar{t}$ production, which are expected to distort the signal shape from a single peak to a peak--dip structure, are taken into account. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed in the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass spectrum in final states with an electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets. The results are interpreted within the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. Exclusion limits on the signal strength are derived as a function of the mass $m_{A/H}$ and the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs fields, $\tanβ$, for $m_{A/H} > 500$ GeV.

Searches for the $Zγ$ decay mode of the Higgs boson and for new high-mass resonances in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This article presents searches for the $Zγ$ decay of the Higgs boson and for narrow high-mass resonances decaying to $Zγ$, exploiting $Z$ boson decays to pairs of electrons or muons. The data analysis uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be consistent with the expected Standard Model background. The observed (expected - assuming Standard Model $pp\to H\to Zγ$ production and decay) upper limit on the production cross section times the branching ratio for $pp\to H\to Zγ$ is 6.6 (5.2) times the Standard Model prediction at the 95% confidence level for a Higgs boson mass of 125.09 GeV. In addition, upper limits are set on the production cross section times the branching ratio as a function of the mass of a narrow resonance between 250 GeV and 2.4 TeV, assuming spin-0 resonances produced via gluon-gluon fusion, and spin-2 resonances produced via gluon-gluon or quark-antiquark initial states. For high-mass spin-0 resonances, the observed (expected) limits vary between 88 fb (61 fb) and 2.8 fb (2.7 fb) for the mass range from 250 GeV to 2.4 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

Performance of the ATLAS Track Reconstruction Algorithms in Dense Environments in LHC Run 2

With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of high-energy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of proton-proton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The impact of charged-particle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 GeV and 1600 GeV is quantified using a novel, data-driven, method. The method uses the energy loss, dE/dx, to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, the measured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is $0.061 \pm 0.006 \textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.014 \textrm{(syst.)}$ and $0.093 \pm 0.017 \textrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.021 \textrm{(syst.)}$ for jet transverse momenta of 200-400 GeV and 1400-1600 GeV, respectively.

Measurement of the $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section using $eμ$ events with b-tagged jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes a measurement of the inclusive top quark pair production cross-section ($σ_{t\bar{t}}$) with a data sample of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV, collected in 2015 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This measurement uses events with an opposite-charge electron--muon pair in the final state. Jets containing $b$-quarks are tagged using an algorithm based on track impact parameters and reconstructed secondary vertices. The numbers of events with exactly one and exactly two $b$-tagged jets are counted and used to determine simultaneously $σ_{t\bar{t}}$ and the efficiency to reconstruct and $b$-tag a jet from a top quark decay, thereby minimising the associated systematic uncertainties. The cross-section is measured to be: $σ_{t\bar{t}}$= 818 $\pm$ 8 (stat) $\pm$ 27 (syst) $\pm$ 19 (lumi) $\pm$ 12 (beam) pb, where the four uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, the integrated luminosity and the LHC beam energy, giving a total relative uncertainty of 4.4%. The result is consistent with theoretical QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order. A fiducial measurement corresponding to the experimental acceptance of the leptons is also presented.

Search for long-lived, massive particles in events with displaced vertices and missing transverse momentum in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for long-lived, massive particles predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model is presented. The search targets final states with large missing transverse momentum and at least one high-mass displaced vertex with five or more tracks, and uses 32.8 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed yield is consistent with the expected background. The results are used to extract 95\% CL exclusion limits on the production of long-lived gluinos with masses up to 2.37 TeV and lifetimes of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$-$\mathcal{O}(10)$ ns in a simplified model inspired by Split Supersymmetry.

Measurement of the inclusive jet cross-sections in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}= $8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive jet production cross-sections are measured in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The total integrated luminosity of the analysed data set amounts to $20.2$ fb$^{-1}$. Double-differential cross-sections are measured for jets defined by the anti-$k_{t}$ jet clustering algorithm with radius parameters of $R=0.4$ and $R=0.6$ and are presented as a function of the jet transverse momentum, in the range between 70 GeV and 2.5 TeV and in six bins of the absolute jet rapidity, between 0 and 3.0. The measured cross-sections are compared to predictions of quantum chromodynamics, calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbation theory, and corrected for non-perturbative and electroweak effects. The level of agreement with predictions, using a selection of different parton distribution functions for the proton, is quantified. Tensions between the data and the theory predictions are observed.

Measurement of the $W^+W^-$ production cross section in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

The production of opposite-charge $W$-boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is measured using data corresponding to 3.16 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Candidate $W$-boson pairs are selected by identifying their leptonic decays into an electron, a muon and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. The cross-section measurement is performed in a fiducial phase space close to the experimental acceptance and is compared to theoretical predictions. Agreement is found between the measurement and the most accurate calculations available.

Study of $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV and search for anomalous quartic gauge couplings with the ATLAS experiment

This paper presents a study of $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ triboson production using events from proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$. The $WWγ$ production cross-section is determined using a final state containing an electron, a muon, a photon, and neutrinos ($eνμνγ$). Upper limits on the production cross-section of the $eνμνγ$ final state and the $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ final states containing an electron or a muon, two jets, a photon, and a neutrino ($eνjjγ$ or $μνjjγ$) are also derived. The results are compared to the cross-sections predicted by the Standard Model at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant. In addition, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived in a fiducial region optimised for a search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of anomalous quartic gauge couplings using an effective field theory. Confidence intervals at 95% confidence level are derived for the 14 coupling coefficients to which $WWγ$ and $WZγ$ production are sensitive.

Search for new phenomena in high-mass final states with a photon and a jet from $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for new phenomena in events having a photon with high transverse momentum and a jet collected in 36.7 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The invariant mass distribution of the leading photon and jet is examined to look for the resonant production of new particles or the presence of new high-mass states beyond the Standard Model. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is observed and cross-section limits for generic Gaussian-shaped resonances are extracted. Excited quarks hypothesized in quark compositeness models and high-mass states predicted in quantum black hole models with extra dimensions are also examined in the analysis. The observed data exclude, at 95% confidence level, the mass range below 5.3 TeV for excited quarks and 7.1 TeV (4.4 TeV) for quantum black holes in the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali (Randall-Sundrum) model with six (one) extra dimensions.

Search for new phenomena in a lepton plus high jet multiplicity final state with the ATLAS experiment using $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 Tev proton-proton collision data

A search for new phenomena in final states characterized by high jet multiplicity, an isolated lepton (electron or muon) and either zero or at least three $b$-tagged jets is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The dominant sources of background are estimated using parameterized extrapolations, based on observables at medium jet multiplicity, to predict the $b$-tagged jet multiplicity distribution at the higher jet multiplicities used in the search. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and 95% confidence-level limits are extracted constraining four simplified models of $R$-parity-violating supersymmetry that feature either gluino or top-squark pair production. The exclusion limits reach as high as 2.1 TeV in gluino mass and 1.2 TeV in top-squark mass in the models considered. In addition, an upper limit is set on the cross-section for Standard Model $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ production of 60 fb (6.5 $\times$ the Standard Model prediction) at 95% confidence level. Finally, model-independent limits are set on the contribution from new phenomena to the signal-region yields.

Measurements of long-range azimuthal anisotropies and associated Fourier coefficients for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ and $13$ TeV and $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

ATLAS measurements of two-particle correlations are presented for $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ and $13$ TeV $pp$ collisions and for $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV $p$+Pb collisions at the LHC. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle $Δϕ$, and pseudorapidity separation $Δη$, using charged particles detected within the pseudorapidity interval $|η|{<}2.5$. Azimuthal modulation in the long-range component of the correlation function, with $|Δη|{>}2$, is studied using a template fitting procedure to remove a "back-to-back" contribution to the correlation function that primarily arises from hard-scattering processes. In addition to the elliptic, $\cos{(2Δϕ)}$, modulation observed in a previous measurement, the $pp$ correlation functions exhibit significant $\cos{(3Δϕ)}$ and $\cos{(4Δϕ)}$ modulation. The Fourier coefficients $v_{n,n}$ associated with the $\cos{(nΔϕ)}$ modulation of the correlation functions for $n =$ $2$-$4$ are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and charged-particle transverse momentum. The Fourier coefficients are observed to be compatible with $\cos{(nϕ)}$ modulation of per-event single-particle azimuthal angle distributions. The single-particle Fourier coefficients $v_n$ are measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, and charged-particle transverse momentum for $n {=} $ $2$-$4$. The integrated luminosities used in this analysis are, $64$ $\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$ for the $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV $pp$ data, $170$ $\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$ for the $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV $pp$ data and $28$ $\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$ for the $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV $p$+Pb data.

Fiducial, total and differential cross-section measurements of $t$-channel single top-quark production in $pp$ collisions at 8 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS detector

Detailed measurements of $t$-channel single top-quark production are presented. They use 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC. Total, fiducial and differential cross-sections are measured for both top-quark and top-antiquark production. The fiducial cross-section is measured with a precision of 5.8 % (top quark) and 7.8 % (top antiquark), respectively. The total cross-sections are measured to be $σ_{\mathrm{tot}}(tq) = 56.7^{+4.3}_{-3.8}\;$pb for top-quark production and $σ_{\mathrm{tot}}(\bar{t}q) = 32.9^{+3.0}_{-2.7}\;$pb for top-antiquark production, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, the ratio of top-quark to top-antiquark production cross-sections is determined to be $R_t=1.72 \pm 0.09$, with an improved relative precision of 4.9 % since several systematic uncertainties cancel in the ratio. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of both the top quark and the top antiquark are measured at both the parton and particle levels. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential cross-sections of the accompanying jet from the $t$-channel scattering are measured at particle level. All measurements are compared to various Monte Carlo predictions as well as to fixed-order QCD calculations where available.

Measurement of $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}$ vector-boson scattering and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the extended results of measurements of $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}jj$ production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings using 20.3 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two leptons ($e$ or $μ$) with the same electric charge and at least two jets are analyzed. Production cross-sections are determined in two fiducial regions, with different sensitivities to the electroweak and strong production mechanisms. An additional fiducial region, particularly sensitive to anomalous quartic gauge coupling parameters $α_4$ and $α_5$, is introduced, which allows more stringent limits on these parameters compared to the previous ATLAS measurement.

Measurement of $WW/WZ \to \ell νq q^{\prime}$ production with the hadronically decaying boson reconstructed as one or two jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with ATLAS, and constraints on anomalous gauge couplings

This paper presents a study of the production of $WW$ or $WZ$ boson pairs, with one $W$ boson decaying to $eν$ or $μν$ and one $W$ or $Z$ boson decaying hadronically. The analysis uses 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV $pp$ collision data, collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Cross-sections for $WW/WZ$ production are measured in high-$p_{T}$ fiducial regions defined close to the experimental event selection. The cross-section is measured for the case where the hadronically decaying boson is reconstructed as two resolved jets, and the case where it is reconstructed as a single jet. The transverse momentum distribution of the hadronically decaying boson is used to search for new physics. Observations are consistent with the Standard Model predictions, and $95\%$ confidence intervals are calculated for parameters describing anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings.

Search for supersymmetry in events with $b$-tagged jets and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model bottom and top quarks is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Direct production of pairs of bottom and top squarks ($\tilde{b}_{1}$ and $\tilde{t}_{1}$) is searched for in final states with $b$-tagged jets and missing transverse momentum. Distinctive selections are defined with either no charged leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state, or one charged lepton. The zero-lepton selection targets models in which the $\tilde{b}_{1}$ is the lightest squark and decays via $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow b \tildeχ^{0}_{1}$, where $\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ is the lightest neutralino. The one-lepton final state targets models where bottom or top squarks are produced and can decay into multiple channels, $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow b \tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ and $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow t \tildeχ^{\pm}_{1}$, or $\tilde{t}_{1} \rightarrow t \tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \rightarrow b \tildeχ^{\pm}_{1}$, where $\tildeχ^{\pm}_{1}$ is the lightest chargino and the mass difference $m_{\tildeχ^{\pm}_{1}}- m_{\tildeχ^{0}_{1}}$ is set to 1 GeV. No excess above the expected Standard Model background is observed. Exclusion limits at 95\% confidence level on the mass of third-generation squarks are derived in various supersymmetry-inspired simplified models.

Measurement of the charge asymmetry in top-quark pair production in the lepton-plus-jets final state in $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports inclusive and differential measurements of the $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry $A_{\textrm{C}}$ in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV $pp$ collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Three differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the $t\bar{t}$ system. The $t\bar{t}$ pairs are selected in the single-lepton channels ($e$ or $μ$) with at least four jets, and a likelihood fit is used to reconstruct the $t\bar{t}$ event kinematics. A Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to infer the asymmetry at parton level from the observed data distribution. The inclusive $t\bar{t}$ charge asymmetry is measured to be $A_{\textrm{C}} = 0.009 \pm 0.005$ (stat.$+$syst.). The inclusive and differential measurements are compatible with the values predicted by the Standard Model.

Measurements of electroweak $Wjj$ production and constraints on anomalous gauge couplings with the ATLAS detector

The measurements are sensitive to the production of a $W$ boson via a triple-gauge-boson vertex and include both the fiducial and differential cross sections of the electroweak process.
