Performance of the ATLAS muon trigger in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

The performance of the ATLAS muon trigger system is evaluated with proton-proton collision data collected in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. It is primarily evaluated using events containing a pair of muons from the decay of $Z$ bosons. The efficiency of the single-muon trigger is measured for muons with transverse momentum 25 < $p_T$ < 100 GeV, with a statistical uncertainty of less than 0.01% and a systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. The $p_T$ range for efficiency determination is extended by using muons from decays of $J/ψ$ mesons, $W$ bosons, and top quarks. The muon trigger shows highly uniform and stable performance. The performance is compared to the prediction of a detailed simulation.

Search for Higgs and $Z$ Boson Decays to $J/ψγ$ and $Υ(nS)γ$ with the ATLAS Detector

A search for the decays of the Higgs and $Z$ bosons to $J/ψγ$ and $Υ(nS)γ$ ($n=1,2,3$) is performed with $pp$ collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to $20.3\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=8\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95\% CL upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the $J/ψγ$ final state the limits are $1.5\times10^{-3}$ and $2.6\times10^{-6}$ for the Higgs and $Z$ boson decays, respectively, while in the $Υ(1S,2S,3S)\,γ$ final states the limits are $(1.3,1.9,1.3)\times10^{-3}$ and $(3.4,6.5,5.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively.

Search for dark matter in events with heavy quarks and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

This article reports on a search for dark matter pair production in association with bottom or top quarks in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with large missing transverse momentum are selected when produced in association with high-momentum jets of which one or more are identified as jets containing $b$-quarks. Final states with top quarks are selected by requiring a high jet multiplicity and in some cases a single lepton. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations and limits are set on the mass scale of effective field theories that describe scalar and tensor interactions between dark matter and Standard Model particles. Limits on the dark-matter--nucleon cross-section for spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions are also provided. These limits are particularly strong for low-mass dark matter. Using a simplified model, constraints are set on the mass of dark matter and of a coloured mediator suitable to explain a possible signal of annihilating dark matter.

Measurements of the W production cross sections in association with jets with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents cross sections for the production of a W boson in association with jets, measured in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. With an integrated luminosity of $4.6 fb^{-1}$, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1 TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. The measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.

Search for resonant diboson production in the $\ell\ell q\bar{q}$ final state in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports on a search for narrow resonances in diboson production in the $\ell\ell q\bar{q}$ final state using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of data events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times branching ratio for Kaluza--Klein gravitons predicted by the Randall--Sundrum model and for Extended Gauge Model W' bosons. These results lead to the exclusion of mass values below 740 GeV and 1590 GeV for the graviton and W' boson respectively.

Search for anomalous production of prompt same-sign lepton pairs and pair-produced doubly charged Higgs bosons with $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV $pp$ collisions using the ATLAS detector

A low-background inclusive search for new physics in events with same-sign dileptons is presented. The search uses proton-proton collisions corresponding to 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity taken in 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Pairs of isolated leptons with the same electric charge and large transverse momenta of the type $e^{\pm}e^{\pm}, e^{\pm}μ^{\pm}$, and $μ^{\pm}μ^{\pm}$ are selected and their invariant mass distribution is examined. No excess of events above the expected level of Standard Model background is found. The results are used to set upper limits on the cross-sections for processes beyond the Standard Model. Limits are placed as a function of the dilepton invariant mass within a fiducial region corresponding to the signal event selection criteria. Exclusion limits are also derived for a specific model of doubly charged Higgs boson production.

Search for a Heavy Neutral Particle Decaying to $eμ$, $eτ$, or $μτ$ in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents a search for a heavy neutral particle decaying into an opposite-sign different-flavor dilepton pair, $e^\pm μ^\mp$, $e^\pm τ^\mp$, or $μ^\pm τ^\mp$ using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The numbers of observed candidate events are compatible with the Standard Model expectations. Limits are set on the cross section of new phenomena in two scenarios: the production of $\tildeν_τ$ in $R$-parity-violating supersymmetric models and the production of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z'$ vector boson.

Search for new phenomena in the dijet mass distribution using $p-p$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Dijet events produced in LHC proton--proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector using the full 2012 data set, with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. Dijet masses up to about 4.5 TeV are probed. No resonance-like features are observed in the dijet mass spectrum. Limits on the cross section times acceptance are set at the 95% credibility level for various hypotheses of new phenomena in terms of mass or energy scale, as appropriate. This analysis excludes excited quarks with a mass below 4.09 TeV, color-octet scalars with a mass below 2.72 TeV, heavy $W'$ bosons with a mass below 2.45 TeV, chiral ${W^\ast}$ bosons with a mass below 1.75 TeV, and quantum black holes with six extra space-time dimensions with threshold mass below 5.82 TeV.

Search for the $b\bar{b}$ decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson in associated $(W/Z)H$ production with the ATLAS detector

A search for the $b\bar{b}$ decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed with the ATLAS experiment using the full dataset recorded at the LHC in Run 1. The integrated luminosities used from $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV are 4.7 and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$, respectively. The processes considered are associated $(W/Z)H$ production, where $W\to eν/μν$, $Z\to ee/μμ$ and $Z\toνν$. The observed (expected) deviation from the background-only hypothesis corresponds to a significance of 1.4 (2.6) standard deviations and the ratio of the measured signal yield to the Standard Model expectation is found to be $μ= 0.52 \pm 0.32 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.24 \mathrm{(syst.)}$ for a Higgs boson mass of 125.36 GeV. The analysis procedure is validated by a measurement of the yield of $(W/Z)Z$ production with $Z\to b\bar{b}$ in the same final states as for the Higgs boson search, from which the ratio of the observed signal yield to the Standard Model expectation is found to be $0.74 \pm 0.09 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.14 \mathrm{(syst.)}$.

Search for pair-produced long-lived neutral particles decaying in the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is used to search for the decay of a scalar boson to a pair of long-lived particles, neutral under the Standard Model gauge group, in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. This search is sensitive to long-lived particles that decay to Standard Model particles producing jets at the outer edge of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter or inside the hadronic calorimeter. No significant excess of events is observed. Limits are reported on the product of the scalar boson production cross section times branching ratio into long-lived neutral particles as a function of the proper lifetime of the particles. Limits are reported for boson masses from 100 GeV to 900 GeV, and a long-lived neutral particle mass from 10 GeV to 150 GeV.

Search for $W' \to t\bar{b}$ in the lepton plus jets final state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for new charged massive gauge bosons, called $W'$, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. This analysis searches for $W'$ bosons in the $W' \to t\bar{b}$ decay channel in final states with electrons or muons, using a multivariate method based on boosted decision trees. The search covers masses between 0.5 and 3.0 TeV, for right-handed or left-handed $W'$ bosons. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed and limits are set on the $W' \to t\bar{b}$ cross-section times branching ratio and on the $W'$-boson effective couplings as a function of the $W'$-boson mass using the CL$_s$ procedure. For a left-handed (right-handed) $W'$ boson, masses below 1.70 (1.92) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Measurements of the Nuclear Modification Factor for Jets in Pb+Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76$ TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Measurements of inclusive jet production are performed in $pp$ and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.0 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ and 0.14 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$, respectively. The jets are identified with the anti-$k_t$ algorithm with $R=0.4$, and the spectra are measured over the kinematic range of jet transverse momentum $32 < p_{\mathrm{T}} < 500$ GeV, and absolute rapidity $|y| < 2.1$ and as a function of collision centrality. The nuclear modification factor, $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$, is evaluated and jets are found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in central collisions compared to $pp$ collisions. The $R_{\mathrm{AA}}$ shows a slight increase with $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ and no significant variation with rapidity.

Search for invisible particles produced in association with single-top-quarks in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of single-top-quarks in association with missing energy is performed in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. In this search, the $W$ boson from the top quark is required to decay into an electron or a muon and a neutrino. No deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed, and upper limits are set on the production cross-section for resonant and non-resonant production of an invisible exotic state in association with a right-handed top quark. In the case of resonant production, for a spin-$0$ resonance with a mass of 500 GeV, an effective coupling strength above 0.15 is excluded at 95% confidence level for the top quark and an invisible spin-$1/2$ state with mass between 0 GeV and 100 GeV. In the case of non-resonant production, an effective coupling strength above 0.2 is excluded at 95% confidence level for the top quark and an invisible spin-$1$ state with mass between 0 GeV and 657 GeV.

Measurement of the transverse polarization of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using the ATLAS detector

The transverse polarization of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is measured. The analysis uses 760 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of minimum bias data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2010. The measured transverse polarization averaged over Feynman $x_{\rm F}$ from $5\times 10^{-5}$ to 0.01 and transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ from 0.8 to 15 GeV is $-0.010 \pm 0.005({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$ for $Λ$ and $0.002 \pm 0.006({\rm stat}) \pm 0.004({\rm syst})$ for $\barΛ$. It is also measured as a function of $x_{\rm F}$ and $p_{\rm T}$, but no significant dependence on these variables is observed. Prior to this measurement, the polarization was measured at fixed-target experiments with center-of-mass energies up to about 40 GeV. The ATLAS results are compatible with the extrapolation of a fit from previous measurements to the $x_{\rm F}$ range covered by this mesurement.

Search for s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents a search at the LHC for s-channel single top-quark production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The analyzed data set was recorded by the ATLAS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. Selected events contain one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets. A multivariate event classifier based on boosted decision trees is developed to discriminate s-channel single top-quark events from the main background contributions. The signal extraction is based on a binned maximum-likelihood fit of the output classifier distribution. The analysis leads to an upper limit on the s-channel single top-quark production cross-section of 14.6 pb at the 95% confidence level. The fit gives a cross-section of $σ_s$=5.0$\pm$4.3 pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in the four-lepton channel in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The final ATLAS Run 1 measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in the decay channel $H\to ZZ^{*}\to\ell^+\ell^-\ell^{'+}\ell^{'-}$, where $\ell,\ell^{'}=e$ or $μ$, are presented. These measurements were performed using $pp$ collision data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, respectively, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The $H\to ZZ^{*}\to 4\ell$ signal is observed with a significance of 8.1 standard deviations, with an expectation of 6.2 standard deviations, at $m_{H}$ = 125.36 GeV, the combined ATLAS measurement of the Higgs boson mass from the $H\to γγ$ and $H\to ZZ^{*}\to 4\ell$ channels. The production rate relative to the Standard Model expectation, the signal strength, is measured in four different production categories in the $H\to ZZ^{*}\to 4\ell$ channel. The measured signal strength, at this mass, and with all categories combined, is 1.44 $^{+0.40}_{-0.33}$. The signal strength for Higgs boson production in gluon fusion or in association with $t\bar{t}$ or $b\bar{b}$ pairs is found to be 1.7 $^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, while the signal strength for vector-boson fusion combined with $WH/ZH$ associated production is found to be 0.3 $^{+1.6}_{-0.9}$.

A measurement of the ratio of the production cross sections for W and Z bosons in association with jets with the ATLAS detector

The ratio of the production cross sections for W and Z bosons in association with jets has been measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on the entire 2011 dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$. Inclusive and differential cross-section ratios for massive vector bosons decaying to electrons and muons are measured in association with jets with transverse momentum $p_T$ > 30 GeV and jet rapidity $|y|$ < 4.4. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations and to predictions from different Monte Carlo generators implementing leading-order matrix elements supplemented by parton showers.

Jet energy measurement and its systematic uncertainty in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The jet energy scale (JES) and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector using proton-proton collision data with a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb$^{-1}$. Jets are reconstructed from energy deposits forming topological clusters of calorimeter cells using the anti-k$_t$ algorithm with distance parameters $R=0.4$ or $R=0.6$, and are calibrated using MC simulations. A residual JES correction is applied to account for differences between data and MC simulations. This correction and its systematic uncertainty are estimated using a combination of in situ techniques exploiting the transverse momentum balance between a jet and a reference object such as a photon or a Z boson, for $20 < p_T < 1000$ GeV and pseudorapidities $|η|<4.5$. The effect of multiple proton-proton interactions is corrected for, and an uncertainty is evaluatedusing in situ techniques. The smallest JES uncertainty of less than $1 %$ is found in the central calorimeter region($|η|<1.2$) for jets with $55< p_T< 500$ GeV. For central jets at lower $p_T$, the uncertainty is about $3 %$. A consistent JES estimate is found using measurements of the calorimeter response of single hadrons in proton-proton collisionsand test-beam data, which also provide the estimate for $p_{T,jet} > 1$ TeV. The calibration of forward jets is derived from dijet $p_T$ balance measurements. The resulting uncertainty reaches its largest value of $6%$ for low-$p_T$ jets at $|η|=4.5$. Additional JES uncertainties due to specific event topologies, such as close-by jets or selections of event samples with an enhanced content of jets originating from light quarks or gluons, are also discussed. The magnitude of these uncertainties depends on the event sample used in a given physics analysis, but typically amounts to $0.5%$ to $3%$.
