Measurement of event-plane correlations in sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV lead-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of event-plane correlations involving two or three event planes of different order is presented as a function of centrality for 7 ub-1 Pb+Pb collision data at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Fourteen correlators are measured using a standard event-plane method and a scalar-product method, and the latter method is found to give a systematically larger correlation signal. Several different trends in the centrality dependence of these correlators are observed. These trends are not reproduced by predictions based on the Glauber model, which includes only the correlations from the collision geometry in the initial state. Calculations that include the final-state collective dynamics are able to describe qualitatively, and in some cases also quantitatively, the centrality dependence of the measured correlators. These observations suggest that both the fluctuations in the initial geometry and non-linear mixing between different harmonics in the final state are important for creating these correlations in momentum space.

Measurement of Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the production processes of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed in the two-photon final state using 5.4 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphotons divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, called the signal strength, is found to be $μ= 1.17 \pm 0.27$ at the value of the Higgs boson mass measured by ATLAS, $m_{H}$ = 125.4 GeV. The analysis is optimized to measure the signal strengths for individual Higgs boson production processes at this value of $m_{H}$. They are found to be $μ_{\mathrm{ggF}} = 1.32 \pm 0.38$, $μ_{\mathrm{VBF}} = 0.8 \pm 0.7$, $μ_{WH} = 1.0 \pm 1.6 $, $μ_{ZH} = 0.1 ^{+3.7}_{-0.1} $, $μ_{{t\bar{t}H}} = 1.6 ^{+2.7}_{-1.8} $, for Higgs boson production through gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, and in association with a $W$ or $Z$ boson or a top-quark pair, respectively. Compared with the previously published ATLAS analysis, the results reported here also benefit from a new energy calibration procedure for photons and the subsequent reduction of the systematic uncertainty on the diphoton mass resolution. No significant deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model are found.

Search for microscopic black holes and string balls in final states with leptons and jets with the ATLAS detector at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV

A search for an excess of events with multiple high transverse momentum objects including charged leptons and jets is presented, using 20.3 fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. No excess of events beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. Using extra-dimensional models for black hole and string ball production and decay, exclusion contours are determined as a function of the mass threshold for production and the fundamental gravity scale for two, four and six extra dimensions. For six extra dimensions, mass thresholds of 4.8-6.2 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on the fundamental gravity scale and model assumptions. Upper limits on the fiducial cross-sections for non-Standard Model production of these final states are set.

Search for Scalar Diphoton Resonances in the Mass Range $65-600$ GeV with the ATLAS Detector in $pp$ Collision Data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 $TeV$

A search for scalar particles decaying via narrow resonances into two photons in the mass range $65-600$ GeV is performed using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV $pp$ collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The recently discovered Higgs boson is treated as a background. No significant evidence for an additional signal is observed. The results are presented as limits at the 95 % confidence level on the production cross-section of a scalar boson times branching ratio into two photons, in a fiducial volume where the reconstruction efficiency is approximately independent of the event topology. The upper limits set extend over a considerably wider mass range than previous searches.

Measurement of long-range pseudorapidity correlations and azimuthal harmonics in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of two-particle correlation functions and the first five azimuthal harmonics, $v_1$ to $v_5$, are presented, using 28 $\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $p$+Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Significant long-range ``ridge-like'' correlations are observed for pairs with small relative azimuthal angle ($|Δϕ|<π/3$) and back-to-back pairs ($|Δϕ|>2π/3$) over the transverse momentum range $0.4 4$ GeV. The $v_2(p_{\rm T})$, $v_3(p_{\rm T})$ and $v_4(p_{\rm T})$ are compared to the $v_n$ coefficients in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =2.76$ TeV with similar event multiplicities. Reasonable agreement is observed after accounting for the difference in the average $p_{\rm T}$ of particles produced in the two collision systems.

Search for the lepton flavor violating decay $Z \rightarrow e μ$ in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for the lepton flavor violating process $Z \rightarrow e μ$ in pp collisions using 20.3 $fb^{-1}$ of data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV. An enhancement in the $e μ$ invariant mass spectrum is searched for at the Z boson mass. The number of Z bosons produced in the data sample is estimated using events of similar topology, $Z \rightarrow ee$ and $μμ$, significantly reducing the systematic uncertainty in the measurement. There is no evidence of an enhancement at the Z boson mass, resulting in an upper limit on the branching fraction, $B(Z \rightarrow e μ)$ < 7.5 x 10$^{-7}$ at the 95% confidence level.

Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with ATLAS

Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. The analysis is performed in the $H \rightarrow γγ$ decay channel using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The $pp\rightarrow H \rightarrow γγ$ fiducial cross section is measured to be $43.2 \pm 9.4 (stat) {}^{+3.2}_{-2.9} (syst) \pm 1.2 (lumi)$ fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4 GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations.

Measurement of the production cross-section of $ψ(2S)\to J/ψ(\toμ^+μ^-)π^+π^-$ in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV at ATLAS

The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for $ψ(2S)$ mesons are measured using 2.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The measurement exploits the $ψ(2S)\to J/ψ(\toμ^+μ^-)π^+π^-$ decay mode, and probes $ψ(2S)$ mesons with transverse momenta in the range $10\leq p_T<100$ GeV and rapidity $|y|<2.0$. The results are compared to other measurements of $ψ(2S)$ production at the LHC and to various theoretical models for prompt and non-prompt quarkonium production.

Measurement of chi_c1 and chi_c2 production with sqrt(s) = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the chi_c1 and chi_c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity. The chi_c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay chi_c -> J/psi gamma (with J/psi -> mu+mu-) where photons are reconstructed from gamma -> e+e- conversions. The production rate of the chi_c2 state relative to the chi_c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt chi_c as a function of J/psi transverse momentum. The prompt chi_c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/psi production to derive the fraction of prompt J/psi produced in feed-down from chi_c decays. The fractions of chi_c1 and chi_c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured.

Search for high-mass dilepton resonances in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used to search for high-mass resonances decaying to dielectron or dimuon final states. Results are presented from an analysis of proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 in the dielectron channel and 20.5 fb-1 in the dimuon channel. A narrow resonance with Standard Model Z couplings to fermions is excluded at 95% confidence level for masses less than 2.79 TeV in the dielectron channel, 2.53 TeV in the dimuon channel, and 2.90 TeV in the two channels combined. Limits on other model interpretations are also presented, including a grand-unification model based on the E6 gauge group, Z* bosons, Minimal Z' Models, a spin-2 graviton excitation from Randall-Sundrum models, quantum black holes and a Minimal Walking Technicolor model with a composite Higgs boson.

Search for new particles in events with one lepton and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a search for new particles in events with one lepton (electron or muon) and missing transverse momentum using 20.3 $fb^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. A $W'$ with Sequential Standard Model couplings is excluded at the 95% confidence level for masses up to 3.24 TeV. Excited chiral bosons ($W^{*}$) with equivalent coupling strengths are excluded for masses up to 3.21 TeV. In the framework of an effective field theory limits are also set on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section as well as the mass scale $M_{*}$ of the unknown mediating interaction for dark matter pair production in association with a leptonically decaying $W$.

Monitoring and data quality assessment of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter

The liquid argon calorimeter is a key component of the ATLAS detector installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The primary purpose of this calorimeter is the measurement of electrons and photons. It also provides a crucial input for measuring jets and missing transverse momentum. An advanced data monitoring procedure was designed to quickly identify issues that would affect detector performance and ensure that only the best quality data are used for physics analysis. This article presents the validation procedure developed during the 2011 and 2012 LHC data taking periods, in which more than 98% of the proton proton luminosity recorded by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 and 8 TeV had calorimeter data quality suitable for physics analysis.

Electron reconstruction and identification efficiency measurements with the ATLAS detector using the 2011 LHC proton-proton collision data

Many of the interesting physics processes to be measured at the LHC have a signature involving one or more isolated electrons. The electron reconstruction and identification efficiencies of the ATLAS detector at the LHC have been evaluated using proton-proton collision data collected in 2011 at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7/fb. Tag-and-probe methods using events with leptonic decays of W and Z bosons and J/psi mesons are employed to benchmark these performance parameters. The combination of all measurements results in identification efficiencies determined with an accuracy at the few per mil level for electron transverse energy greater than 30 GeV.

Measurements of jet vetoes and azimuthal decorrelations in dijet events produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

Additional jet activity in dijet events is measured using $pp$ collisions at ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R=0.6. This is done using variables such as the fraction of dijet events without an additional jet in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet subsystem and correlations between the azimuthal angles of the dijets. They are presented, both with and without a veto on additional jet activity in the rapidity interval, as a function of the mean transverse momentum of the dijets and of the rapidity interval size. The double differential dijet cross section is also measured as a function of the interval size and the azimuthal angle between the dijets. These variables probe differences in the approach to resummation of large logarithms when performing QCD calculations. The data are compared to POWHEG, interfaced to the PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG parton shower generators, as well as to HEJ with and without interfacing it to the ARIADNE parton shower generator. None of the theoretical predictions agree with the data across the full phase-space considered; however, POWHEG+PYTHIA 8 and HEJ+ARIADNE are found to provide the best agreement with the data. These measurements use the full data sample collected with the ATLAS detector in 7 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 36.1 pb$^-1$ and 4.5 fb$^-1$ for data collected during 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Flavour tagged time dependent angular analysis of the $B_s \rightarrow J/ψϕ$ decay and extraction of $ΔΓ$ and the weak phase $ϕ_s$ in ATLAS

A measurement of the $B_s \rightarrow J/ψϕ$ decay parameters, updated to include flavour tagging is reported using $4.9 fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector from $\sqrt{s}= 7$TeV $pp$ collisions recorded in 2011 at the LHC. The values measured for the physical parameters are: \begin{eqnarray*} ϕ_s & = & 0.12 \pm 0.25(stat.)\pm 0.05(syst.)rad \\ ΔΓ& = & 0.053 \pm 0.021(stat.) 0.010(syst.)ps^{-1} \\ Γ_s & = & 0.677 \pm 0.007 (stat.)\pm 0.004 (syst.)ps^{-1}\\ |A_{\parallel}(0)|^2 & = & 0.220 \pm 0.008 (stat.)\pm 0.009(syst.)\\ |A_{0}(0)|^2 & = & 0.529 \pm 0.006 (stat.)\pm 0.012(syst.)\\ δ_\perp & = & 3.89 \pm 0.47(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)rad \end{eqnarray*} where the parameter $ΔΓ$ is constrained to be positive. The $S$-wave contribution was measured and found to be compatible with zero. Results for $ϕ_s$ and $ΔΓ$ are also presented as $68\%$ and $95\%$ likelihood contours, which show agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Search for dark matter in events with a Z boson and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for production of dark matter particles recoiling against a leptonically decaying Z boson in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with large missing transverse momentum and two oppositely-charged electrons or muons consistent with the decay of a Z boson are analyzed. No excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. Limits are set on the mass scale of the contact interaction as a function of the dark matter particle mass using an effective field theory description of the interaction of dark matter with quarks or with Z bosons. Limits are also set on the coupling and mediator mass of a model in which the interaction is mediated by a scalar particle.

Measurement of the $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section as a function of jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

The $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section dependence on jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum is reported for proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in the single-lepton channel. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and comprise the full 2011 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the jet multiplicity for up to eight jets using jet transverse momentum thresholds of 25, 40, 60, and 80 GeV, and as a function of jet transverse momentum up to the fifth jet. The results are shown after background subtraction and corrections for all detector effects, within a kinematic range closely matched to the experimental acceptance. Several QCD-based Monte Carlo models are compared with the results. Sensitivity to the parton shower modelling is found at the higher jet multiplicities, at high transverse momentum of the leading jet and in the transverse momentum spectrum of the fifth leading jet. The MC@NLO+HERWIG MC is found to predict too few events at higher jet multiplicities.

Measurement of the cross-section of high transverse momentum vector bosons reconstructed as single jets and studies of jet substructure in $pp$ collisions at ${\sqrt{s}}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of the cross-section for high transverse momentum $W$ and $Z$ bosons produced in $pp$ collisions and decaying to all-hadronic final states. The data used in the analysis were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7~\rm TeV$ and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $4.6~\rm fb^{-1}$. The measurement is performed by reconstructing the boosted $W$ or $Z$ bosons in single jets. The reconstructed jet mass is used to identify the $W$ and $Z$ bosons, and a jet substructure method based on energy cluster information in the jet centre-of-mass frame is used to suppress the large multi-jet background. The cross-section for events with a hadronically decaying $W$ or $Z$ boson, with transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}>320\,{\rm GeV}$ and pseudorapidity $|η|<1.9$, is measured to be $σ_{W+Z}= 8.5 \pm 1.7$ pb and is compared to the next-to-leading-order calculations. The selected events are further used to study jet grooming techniques.
