SemanticSlider3D: Training-Free Continuous Semantic Editing for 3D Objects

Fine-grained control over continuous semantic attributes of 3D objects is essential for 3D content creation, but is not well supported by conventional 3D modeling workflows or prompt-based interaction with existing generative AI tools. While slider-based methods have proven effective for fine-grained semantic control in 2D image generation, no equivalent approach exists for 3D. Extending these 2D methods to 3D is non-trivial due to challenges unique to 3D, including geometric integrity and cross-view coherence. We present SemanticSlider3D, a technique for continuous semantic attribute editing of 3D objects that requires no per-attribute training. Given a user-specified attribute, our pipeline constructs a semantic editing direction in the latent space of a state-of-the-art 3D generation model, presenting a diverse and coherent spectrum of 3D variations. A technical validation on a dataset of 50 3D object-attribute pairs shows our method was preferred by all five human assessors across variation range, consistency, 3D object quality, and attribute disentanglement, over a baseline combining a 2D slider with an image-to-3D model. An exploratory study with six participants demonstrates that SemanticSlider3D supported decision-making in 3D prototyping and was perceived as a valuable addition to existing workflows.

Map2Video: Street View Imagery Driven AI Video Generation

AI video generation has lowered barriers to video creation, but current tools still struggle with inconsistency. Filmmakers often find that clips fail to match characters and backgrounds, making it difficult to build coherent sequences. A formative study with filmmakers highlighted challenges in shot composition, character motion, and camera control. We present Map2Video, a street view imagery-driven AI video generation tool grounded in real-world geographies. The system integrates Unity and ComfyUI with the VACE video generation model, as well as OpenStreetMap and Mapillary for street view imagery. Drawing on familiar filmmaking practices such as location scouting and rehearsal, Map2Video enables users to choose map locations, position actors and cameras in street view imagery, sketch movement paths, refine camera motion, and generate spatially consistent videos. We evaluated Map2Video with 12 filmmakers. Compared to an image-to-video baseline, it achieved higher spatial accuracy, required less cognitive effort, and offered stronger controllability for both scene replication and open-ended creative exploration.

STAR: Smartphone-analogous Typing in Augmented Reality

While text entry is an essential and frequent task in Augmented Reality (AR) applications, devising an efficient and easy-to-use text entry method for AR remains an open challenge. This research presents STAR, a smartphone-analogous AR text entry technique that leverages a user's familiarity with smartphone two-thumb typing. With STAR, a user performs thumb typing on a virtual QWERTY keyboard that is overlain on the skin of their hands. During an evaluation study of STAR, participants achieved a mean typing speed of 21.9 WPM (i.e., 56% of their smartphone typing speed), and a mean error rate of 0.3% after 30 minutes of practice. We further analyze the major factors implicated in the performance gap between STAR and smartphone typing, and discuss ways this gap could be narrowed.

InfraredTags: Embedding Invisible AR Markers and Barcodes Using Low-Cost, Infrared-Based 3D Printing and Imaging Tools

Existing approaches for embedding unobtrusive tags inside 3D objects require either complex fabrication or high-cost imaging equipment. We present InfraredTags, which are 2D markers and barcodes imperceptible to the naked eye that can be 3D printed as part of objects, and detected rapidly by low-cost near-infrared cameras. We achieve this by printing objects from an infrared-transmitting filament, which infrared cameras can see through, and by having air gaps inside for the tag's bits, which appear at a different intensity in the infrared image. We built a user interface that facilitates the integration of common tags (QR codes, ArUco markers) with the object geometry to make them 3D printable as InfraredTags. We also developed a low-cost infrared imaging module that augments existing mobile devices and decodes tags using our image processing pipeline. Our evaluation shows that the tags can be detected with little near-infrared illumination (0.2lux) and from distances as far as 250cm. We demonstrate how our method enables various applications, such as object tracking and embedding metadata for augmented reality and tangible interactions.

Using Conformity to Probe Interaction Challenges in XR Collaboration

The concept of a conformity spectrum is introduced to describe the degree to which virtualization adheres to real world physical characteristics surrounding the user. This is then used to examine interaction challenges when collaborating across different levels of virtuality and conformity.
