Aleksandrov reflection for Geometric Flows in Hyperbolic Spaces

We develop an Aleksandrov reflection framework for a large class of expanding curvature flows in hyperbolic space, with inverse mean curvature flow serving as a model case. The method applies to the level-set formulation of the flow, and as a consequence we obtain graphical and Lipschitz estimates. Using these estimates, we show that solutions become star-shaped and therefore converge exponentially fast to an umbilic hypersurface at infinity. We also extend these results to the non-compact setting in two cases. First, assuming the asymptotic boundary of the solution consists of a single point, we show that the flow becomes a graph over a horosphere with uniform gradient bounds and converges to a limiting horosphere. Second, assuming the asymptotic boundary consists of two points, we prove that the flow eventually becomes a global graph over a hyperbolic cylinder with uniform gradient bounds; this is achieved through an explicit cylindrical barrier construction analogous to the horospherical one.

Causal-Informed Hybrid Online Adaptive Optimization for Ad Load Personalization in Large-Scale Social Networks

Personalizing ad load in large-scale social networks requires balancing user experience and conversions under operational constraints. Traditional primal-dual methods enforce constraints reliably but adapt slowly in dynamic environments, while Bayesian Optimization (BO) enables exploration but suffers from slow convergence. We propose a hybrid online adaptive optimization framework CTRCBO ( Cohort-Based Trust Region Contextual Bayesian Optimization), combining primal-dual with BO, enhanced by trust-region updates and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) surrogates for both objectives and constraints. Our approach leverages a upstream Causal ML model to inform the surrogate, improving decision quality and enabling efficient exploration-exploitation and online tuning. We evaluate our method on a billion-user social network, demonstrating faster convergence, robust constraint satisfaction, and improved personalization metrics, including real-world online AB test results.

Improving Zero-Shot Detection of Low Prevalence Chest Pathologies using Domain Pre-trained Language Models

Recent advances in zero-shot learning have enabled the use of paired image-text data to replace structured labels, replacing the need for expert annotated datasets. Models such as CLIP-based CheXzero utilize these advancements in the domain of chest X-ray interpretation. We hypothesize that domain pre-trained models such as CXR-BERT, BlueBERT, and ClinicalBERT offer the potential to improve the performance of CLIP-like models with specific domain knowledge by replacing BERT weights at the cost of breaking the original model's alignment. We evaluate the performance of zero-shot classification models with domain-specific pre-training for detecting low-prevalence pathologies. Even though replacing the weights of the original CLIP-BERT degrades model performance on commonly found pathologies, we show that pre-trained text towers perform exceptionally better on low-prevalence diseases. This motivates future ensemble models with a combination of differently trained language models for maximal performance.

Instability and disintegration of vortex rings during head-on collisions and wall interactions

The head-on collision of two vortex rings can produce diverse phenomena: a tiara of secondary rings, vortex sheets which flatten and interact iteratively, or the violent disintegration of the rings into a turbulent cloud. The outcome of the interaction is determined by the nature of the instability affecting two impinging vortex rings. Here, we carry out a systematic study to determine the dominant instability as a function of the parameters of the problem. To this end, we numerically simulate the head on collision of vortex rings with circulation Reynolds numbers between $1000$ and $3500$ and varying slenderness ratios $Λ=a/R$ ranging from $Λ=0.1$ to $0.35$, with $a$ the core radius and $R$ the ring radius. By studying the temporal evolution of the energy and viscous dissipation, we elucidate the role azimuthal instabilities play in determining what the outcomes of the collision are. We then compare these collisions to the head-on impact of a vortex ring on a free-slip and a no-slip wall. The free-slip wall imposes a mirror symmetry, which impedes certain instabilities and at sufficiently large Reynolds numbers leads to the formation of a half-tiara of vortices. Impact against a no-slip wall results in the process where a secondary vortex ring is formed after the ejection of the resulting boundary layer. When the Reynolds number is above a certain threshold, which increases with $Λ$, the vortices disintegrate through azimuthal instabilities, resulting in a turbulent cloud.

Photometry of active Centaurs: Colors of dormant active Centaur nuclei

We present multiband photometric observations of nine Centaurs. Five of the targets are known active Centaurs (167P/CINEOS, 174P/Echeclus, P/2008 CL94, P/2011 S1, and C/2012 Q1), and the other four are inactive Centaurs belonging to the redder of the two known color subpopulations (83982 Crantor, 121725 Aphidas, 250112 2002 KY14, and 281371 2008 FC76). We measure the optical colors of eight targets and carry out a search for cometary activity. In addition to the four inactive Centaurs, three of the five active Centaurs showed no signs of activity at the time of observation, yielding the first published color measurements of the bare nuclei of 167P and P/2008 CL94 without possible coma contamination. Activity was detected on P/2011 S1 and C/2012 Q1, yielding relatively high estimated mass loss rates of $140\pm20$ and $250\pm40$ kg/s, respectively. The colors of the dormant nuclei are consistent with the previously-published colors, indicating that any effect of non-geometric scattering from Centaur dust or blanketing debris on the measured colors is minimal. The results of our observations are discussed in the context of the cause of Centaur activity and the color distributions of active and inactive Centaurs. We suggest that the relative paucity of red Centaurs with low-perihelion orbits may not be directly due to the blanketing of the surface by unweathered particulates, but could instead be a result of the higher levels of thermal processing on low-perihelion Centaurs in general.
