(Generalized) Spine Subalgebras of Fourier-Stieltjes algebras and their Homomorphisms

For any upper semilattice ${\cal D}$ of locally precompact topologies on a locally compact group $G$, we define an associated generalized spine subalgebra $A^*_{\cal D}(G)$ of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$. We show that $A^*_{\cal D}(G)$ is a semilattice-graded $\ell^1$-direct sum of maximal copies of Fourier algebras and we identify its spectrum as a semilattice of groups. We build a collection of examples of generalized spine algebras over whose spectra we exhibit fine control. We define notions of compatible fusions of homomorphisms and affine maps, and use these definitions to characterize all completely positive, completely contractive and, when $G$ is amenable, all completely bounded homomorphisms from a generalized spine algebra $A^*_{\cal D}(G)$ to a Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(H)$. These results are new, even when $A^*_{\cal D}(G)$ is the full spine algebra $A^*(G)$ and even when $G$ and $H$ are abelian. We provide examples illustrating the scope of our theorems.

Invariant Subspaces in the Dual of $A_{cb}(G)$ and $A_M(G)$

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. In this paper, we study various invariant subspaces of the duals of the algebras $A_M(G)$ and $A_{cb}(G)$ obtained by taking the closure of the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ in the multiplier algebra $MA(G)$ and completely bounded multiplier algebra $M_{cb}A(G)$ respectively. In particular, we will focus on various functorial properties and containment relationships between these various invariant subspaces including the space of uniformly continuous functionals and the almost periodic and weakly almost periodic functionals. Amongst other results, we show that if $\mathcal{A}(G)$ is either $A_M(G)$ or $A_{cb}(G)$, then $UCB(\mathcal{A}(G))\subseteq WAP(G)$ if and only if $G$ is discrete. We also show that if $UCB(\mathcal{A}(G))=\mathcal{A}(G)^*$, then every amenable closed subgroup of $G$ is compact. Let $i:A(G)\to \mathcal{A}(G)$ be the natural injection. We show that if $X$ is any closed topologically introverted subspace of $\mathcal{A}(G)^*$ that contains $L^1(G)$, then $i^*(X)$ is closed in $A(G)$ if and only if $G$ is amenable.

Arens regularity of ideals in $A(G)$, $A_{cb}(G)$ and $A_M(G)$

In this paper, we look at the question of when various ideals in the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ or its closures $A_M(G)$ and $A_{cb}(G)$ in, respectively, its multiplier and $cb$-multiplier algebra are Arens regular. We show that in each case, if a non-zero ideal is Arens regular, then the underlying group $G$ must be discrete. In addition, we show that if an ideal $I$ in $A(G)$ has a bounded approximate identity, then it is Arens regular if and only if it is finite-dimensional.

On the structure of invertible elements in certain Fourier-Stieltjes algebras

For a locally compact abelian group $G$, J. L. Taylor (1971) gave a complete characterization of invertible elements in the measure algebra $M(G)$. Using the Fourier-Stieltjes transform, this characterization can be carried out in the context of Fourier-Stieltjes algebras $B(G)$. We obtain this latter characterization for the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ of certain classes of locally compact groups, in particular, many totally minimal groups and the $ax+b$-group.
