Transition of dimuonium through foil

This article presents a study of the passage of dimuonium through the foil of ordinary matter. First, we provide an overview of how dimuonium is planned to be produced for such a type of experiment and how it is expected to interact with the ordinary atoms -- predominantly electromagnetically via the screened coulomb potential of the atomic nuclei. Then, we describe the transport equations that represent the evolution of dimuonium states during the passage and their solution methods. Finally, for three different foils (Beryllium, Aluminium and Lead), we present the results of this study. To estimate impact of uncertainties in the potential of a target atom, we study 15 different approximations of the atomic potential and show that the corresponding atomic-potential-model-dependent error in the yields of the low lying states of dimuonium is quite small within the framework of the applied Born approximation. The convergence of the results after truncation of the infinite system of transport equations to the finite number of quantum states of dimuonium is also studied, and good convergence for the yields of low-lying states is demonstrated.

Majorana transformation of the Thomas-Fermi equation demystified

The Majorana transformation makes it possible to reduce the Thomas-Fermi equation to a first-order differential equation. This reduction is possible due to the special scaling property of the Thomas-Fermi equation under homology transformations. Such reductions are well known in the context of stellar astrophysics, where the use of homology-invariant variables has long proved useful. We use homology-invariant variables in the context of the Thomas-Fermi equation to demystify the origin of the otherwise mysterious Majorana transformation.

Berry phase of spin-one system in a rotating electric field

We consider in sufficient detail how the Berry phase arises in a rotating electric field in a model system with spin one. The goal is to help the student who first encountered this interesting problem, which is fraught with some subtleties that require attention in order not to go astray.

Do moving clocks slow down?

The special theory of relativity has fundamentally changed our views of space and time. The relativity of simultaneity in particular, and the theory of relativity as a whole, still presents significant difficulty for beginners in the theory. The difficulty stems from the fact that the usual presentation of special relativity is based on Newtonian concepts, which are relativized and change their meaning in the course of the presentation. A better pedagogical practice, in our opinion, would be to base the presentation from the very beginning on the four-dimensional formulation of Minkowski and thus remove from the theory all the paradoxical connotations that invariably accompany the usual presentation of special relativity.

MuMuPy: A Dimuonium-Matter Interaction Calculator

In this article, we present MuMuPy, a computational library and cloud-based tool for calculating cross sections for the interaction of dimuonium (true muonium) with matter. MuMuPy calculates corresponding form factors and allows one to find the probabilities of dimuonium transitions in the electric field of the nucleus. MuMuPy was developed in the context of the $μμ$-tron facility, the project of a low-energy electron-positron collider for production and experimental study of dimuonium, proposed in our home institute, Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The reliability of MuMuPy was verified by three independent methods, one of which was developed by the authors earlier.

Ultralight dark photon and Casimir effect

We investigate the influence of a dark photon on the Casimir effect and calculate the corresponding leading contribution to the Casimir energy. For expected magnitudes of the photon - dark photon mixing parameter, the influence turns out to be negligible. The plasmon dispersion relation is also not noticeably modified by the presence of a dark photon.

Dark photon portal into mirror world

Dark photons and mirror matter are well-motivated dark matter candidates. It is possible that both of them arose during the compactification and symmetry breaking scenario of the heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string theory and are related to each other. In this case, dark photons can become a natural portal into the mirror world. Unfortunately, the expected magnitude of the induced interactions of ordinary matter with mirror matter is too small to be of phenomenological interest.

Alternative implementation of atomic form factors

Using a new result on the integral involving the product of Bessel functions and associated Laguerre polynomials, published in the mathematical literature some time ago, we present an alternative method for calculating discrete-discrete transition form factors for hydrogen-like atoms. For comparison, an overview is also given of two other commonly used methods.
