Global remote sensing reveals vegetation clustering as a physical footprint of shifting aridity trends in drylands

Due to climatic changes, excessive grazing, and deforestation, semi-arid and arid ecosystems are vulnerable to desertification and land degradation. As aridity increases, vegetation cover often self-organizes into spatial patterns before collapsing to bare soil. While recent theoretical work has established that spatially heterogeneous yet isotropic environments induce a smooth hysteresis loop -- yielding either periodic (hexagonal) patterns during degradation or disordered (clustered) patterns during recovery -- empirical validation of this physical footprint at a global scale has been lacking. Here, we present an extensive empirical validation using remote sensing across eight distinct global ecosystems, coupled with historical bio-climatic databases. We demonstrate that the spatial morphology of vegetation patches acts as a direct physical footprint of the ecosystem's historical aridity trend. Our results show that ecosystems experiencing increasing aridity display periodic arrays with a defined wavelength, whereas those recovering under decreasing aridity exhibit scale-free clustering. This framework provides a non-destructive, robust satellite-based indicator for diagnosing whether a dryland ecosystem is on a degradation or recovery pathway.

Photoelectron angular distributions for photoionization of argon by two-color fields

We perform numerical simulations for photoionization of the argon atom when exposed to a combined field of an infrared laser (abbreviated IR) and its 13th harmonic (H13) by solving the Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation (TDSE)], noting that the associated energy spectrum displays a harmonic peak dressed by the IR and other peaks called side-bands SB+-n corresponds to the absorption (+n) and the emission (-n) of the n-infrared photons above the ionization threshold. In two-color H13+IR photoionization of argon, the analysis of the angular distribution of the ejected electron in the continuum, and our calculation approach is based on the method of projection of the electronic wave function on the states of the continuum, the latter was found in using the Runge-Kutta 4 method and the Schutting method. Our simulation results demonstrate that either for the harmonic peak or the sideband, the shape of the angular distribution exhibits a good agreement with the interpretation based on the generalized Fano rule for the absorption and emission of photons.

Generation of Super Intense Isolated Attosecond Pulses from Trapped Electrons in Metal Surfaces

Generation of ultrabroadband isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) is essential for time-resolved applications in chemical and material sciences, as they have the potential to access the spectral water window region of chemical elements, which yet has to be established. Here we propose a numerical scheme for highly efficient high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and hence the generation of ultrabroadband IAPs in the XUV and soft x-ray regions. The scheme combines the use of chirped pulses with trapped electrons in copper transition-metal surfaces and takes advantage of the characteristic features of an infrared (IR) single-cycle pulse to achieve high conversion efficiencies and large spectral bandwidths. In particular, we show that ultrabroad IAPs with a duration of 370 as and with a bandwidth covering the photon energy range of 50-250 and 350-450 eV can be produced. We further show that introducing an additional IR single cycle pulse permits to enhance the harmonic yield in the soft x-ray photon energy region by almost 7 order of magnitude. Our findings thus elucidate the relevance of trapped electrons in metal surfaces for developing stable and highly efficient attosecond light sources in compact solid-state devices.
