Discrete positivity and maximum principles for a finite element discretization of the Richards equation

Standard finite element discretizations of the Richards equation may violate the discrete minimum principle, producing unphysical negative saturations. While existing bound-preserving methods typically rely on computationally expensive fully implicit solvers, we propose a novel semi-implicit finite element framework utilizing a bounded continuous auxiliary variable. Our approach treats the gravity-driven advective term using a linearly implicit technique, which improves the time-step restrictions required by explicit gravity methods near the degenerate limit. We provide rigorous mathematical proofs establishing sufficient geometric and algebraic constraints for discrete positivity and the discrete maximum principle, specifically a local Péclet condition and a discrete row-sum condition. When both conditions are satisfied on weakly acute meshes with mass lumping, our framework ensures that numerical solutions strictly respect physical bounds across highly degenerate conditions and initially dry soil regimes. Comprehensive numerical validation demonstrates the method across multiple flow regimes, including cases where algebraic conditions are satisfied, violated, and recovered through mesh refinement.

Mathematical analysis for a doubly degenerate parabolic equation: Application to the Richards equation

This paper presents a mathematical analysis of a doubly degenerate parabolic equation and its application to the Richards equation using a bounded auxiliary variable. We establish the existence of weak solutions using semi-implicit time discretization combined with maximal monotone operator theory. The analysis is conducted within weighted Sobolev spaces, allowing for a rigorous treatment of the equation's strict degeneracy and strong nonlinearities. A key feature of this study is the derivation of convergence results without imposing strictly positive lower bounds on the diffusivity or requiring high regularity of the solution. Furthermore, we prove that the Richards equation using the introduced auxiliary variable preserves the physical bounds of the saturation and demonstrate the unconditional linear convergence of the L-scheme linearization to the semi-discrete solution.

A finite element method using a bounded auxiliary variable for solving the Richards equation

The Richards equation, a nonlinear elliptic parabolic equation, is widely used to model infiltration in porous media. We develop a finite element method for solving the Richards equation by introducing a new bounded auxiliary variable to eliminate unbounded terms in the weak formulation of the method. This formulation is discretized using a semi-implicit scheme and the resulting nonlinear system is solved using Newton's method. Our approach eliminates the need of regularization techniques and offers advantages in handling both dry and fully saturated zones. In the proposed techniques, a non-overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition method is used for modeling infiltration in layered soils. We apply the proposed method to solve the Richards equation using the Havercamp and van Genuchten models for the capillary pressure. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the proposed approach, including tests such as modeling flows in fibrous sheets where the initial medium is totally dry, two cases with fully saturated and dry regions, and an infiltration problem in layered soils. The numerical results demonstrate the stability and accuracy of the proposed numerical method. The numerical solutions remain positive in the presence of totally dry zones. The numerical investigations clearly demonstrated the capability of the proposed method to effectively predict the dynamics of flows in unsaturated soils.
