Cocycle Actions on Hidden Quantum Markov Models: Symmetry Protection and Topological Order

We develop a symmetry action framework for hidden quantum Markov models (HQMMs) tailored to one-dimensional quantum spin systems and symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In our setting, a symmetry group $G$ acts projectively on the hidden (virtual) degrees of freedom and linearly on the physical observation space, yielding a global HQMM state that is invariant under the combined action of $G$ for both conventional and causal (input--output) structures. We show that such symmetry actions are naturally classified by a group-cohomology $2$-cocycle $[ω] \in H^{2}(G,\mathrm{U}(1))$, in direct analogy with the standard cohomological classification of one-dimensional bosonic SPT phases via projective edge representations. As an explicit example, we apply this construction to the Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki (AKLT) chain, where the hidden layer carries a nontrivial class $[ω] \in H^{2}(\mathrm{SO}(3),\mathrm{U}(1))$ encoding its SPT order. In this case the HQMM formalism reproduces the known SPT properties of the AKLT state while providing a stochastic, Markovian description of the underlying virtual dynamics. Our results establish HQMMs as a natural bridge between quantum stochastic processes, tensor-network descriptions of many-body systems, and symmetry-protected topological order.

AKLT State is Indeed the Observation Process of a causal Hidden quantum Markov Model

We present a rigorous formulation of the spin-1 Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki (AKLT) state within the framework of hidden quantum Markov models (HQMMs). We show that the AKLT ground state admits a natural representation as the observable output of a causal HQMM, thereby endowing it with an underlying hidden quantum memory that is fully consistent with its standard finitely correlated (matrix product state) description. This viewpoint yields a compact and structurally transparent characterization of the AKLT chain as a quantum spin system equipped with intrinsic quantum memory. Our results further indicate that the HQMM framework provides a promising setting for analyzing measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) and related information-processing tasks.

Quantum Viterbi Algorithm

We introduce a quantum Viterbi decoding algorithm for hidden quantum Markov models (HQMMs) motivated by quantum information processing and quantum algorithms. Given a finite sequence of measurement outcomes, the algorithm identifies hidden quantum trajectories that maximize a joint decoding functional, serving as a genuine quantum analogue of the classical Viterbi score. Unlike classical hidden Markov models, where decoding optimizes over a finite discrete state space, our method performs optimization over a continuous manifold of pure quantum effects, thereby exploiting coherent superpositions in the hidden memory. We prove a strict quantum advantage: coherent hidden trajectories can achieve decoding scores that strictly exceed any classical strategy constrained to diagonal (commuting) effects, even when both models share the same observed statistics. These results position quantum Viterbi decoding as a concrete quantum algorithmic primitive for sequential decision-making, with direct applications to quantum memories, quantum communication with memory, and near-term quantum machine learning on NISQ devices.

Causal Architecture in Hidden Quantum Markov Models

We introduce a class of causal hidden quantum Markov models (cHQMMs) that reverse the usual order of hidden updates and emissions compared to conventional HQMMs. Using a simple qubit model with a rotating hidden state and sharp measurements, we show that these two architectures-emission then transition versus transition then emission-generally produce different quantum processes. They can be distinguished by measurements at arbitrarily late times, no matter how the hidden system is initialized, and even when the two models start from different initial states. This means that the two orders of operations lead to genuinely different observable behaviors that cannot be reconciled by waiting longer or by choosing special initial conditions. At the same time, we prove that the two architectures become equivalent when they arise from entangled liftings of classical hidden Markov models, sharing the same classical statistics. This identifies a clear dividing line between classical and genuinely quantum hidden memory. Our findings highlight causal HQMMs as a useful tool for studying and distinguishing quantum memory effects in sequential processes.

Ergodic Theory of Inhomogeneous Quantum Processes

This work develops a rigorous framework for analysing ergodicity and mixing in time-inhomogeneous quantum dynamics. It considers quantum evolutions generated by sequences of quantum channels and examines in detail the relationship between the forward and backward dynamics, showing that they are generically nonequivalent in a structurally meaningful way. A central contribution is the adoption of a quantum Markov-Dobrushin approach to quantify mixing, which yields sharpened conditions for convergence rates and for establishing exponential stability of the induced dynamics. The resulting formalism not only extends classical and stationary quantum theories, but also naturally accommodates non-translationally invariant matrix product states, thereby providing a unified interface with experimentally relevant quantum many-body systems.

A Hidden Quantum Markov model framework for Entanglement and Topological Order in the AKLT Chain

This paper introduces a hidden quantum Markov models (HQMMs) framework to the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) state-a cornerstone example of a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. The model's observation system is the physical spin-1 chain, which emerges from a hidden spin-1/2 layer through well-defined quantum emission operation. We show that the underlying Markov dynamics caputure maximal entanglement through the use of significant channels relevant to the AKLT state. We also show that SPT order induces a covariance on the observation decoding channels. This establishes an additional bridge between the quantum Machine learning and many-body physics, with promising implication in topological order and quantum information.

Dynamics of Matrix Product States in the Heisenberg Picture: Projectivity, Ergodicity, and Mixing

This paper introduces a Heisenberg picture approach to Matrix Product States (MPS), offering a rigorous yet intuitive framework to explore their structure and classification. MPS efficiently represent ground states of quantum many-body systems, with infinite MPS (iMPS) capturing long-range correlations and thermodynamic behavior. We classify MPS into projective and non-projective types, distinguishing those with finite correlation structures from those requiring ergodic quantum channels to define a meaningful limit. Using the Markov-Dobrushin inequality, we establish conditions for infinite-volume states and introduce ergodic and mixing MPS. As an application, we analyze the depolarizing MPS, highlighting its lack of finite correlations and the need for an alternative ergodic description. This work deepens the mathematical foundations of MPS and iMPS, providing new insights into entanglement, phase transitions, and quantum dynamics.

Matrix Product States as Observations of Entangled Hidden Markov Models

This paper reveals the intrinsic structure of Matrix Product States (MPS) by establishing their deep connection to entangled hidden Markov models (EHMMs). It is demonstrated that a significant class of MPS can be derived as the outcomes of EHMMs, showcasing their underlying quantum correlations. Additionally, a lower bound is derived for the relative entropy between the EHMM-observation process and the corresponding MPS, providing a quantitative measure of their informational divergence. Conversely, it is shown that every MPS is naturally associated with an EHMM, further highlighting the interplay between these frameworks. These results are supported by illustrative examples from quantum information, emphasizing their importance in understanding entanglement, quantum correlations, and tensor network representations.

Matrix Product States in Quantum Spin Chains

In this work, we present a novel representation of matrix product states (MPS) within the framework of quasi-local algebras. By introducing an enhanced compatibility condition, we enable the extension of finite MPS to an infinite-volume state, providing new insights into complex, high-dimensional quantum systems. As an illustrative example, we apply this method to the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. This approach offers significant potential for advancing theoretical frameworks and practical methodologies in the field of quantum information.

An Exponential Mixing Condition for Quantum Channels

Quantum channels, pivotal in information processing, describe transformations within quantum systems and enable secure communication and error correction. Ergodic and mixing properties elucidate their behavior. In this paper, we establish a sufficient condition for mixing based on a quantum Markov-Dobrushin inequality. We prove that if the Markov-Dobrushin constant of a quantum channel exceeds zero, it exhibits exponential mixing behavior. We explore limitations of some quantum channels, demonstrating that unistochastic channels are not mixing. Additionally, we analyze ergodicity of a class of mixed-unitary channels associated with finite groups of unitary operators. Finally, we apply our results to the qubit depolarizing channel.

Hidden processes and hidden Markov processes: classical and quantum

This paper consists of $3$ parts. The first part only considers classical processes and introduces two different extensions of the notion of hidden Markov process. In the second part, the notion of quantum hidden process is introduced. In the third part it is proven that, by restricting various types of quantum Markov chains to appropriate commutative sub-algebras (diagonal sub-algebras) one recovers all the classical hidden process and, in addition, one obtains families of processes which are not usual hidden Markov process, but are included in the above mentioned extensions of these processes. In this paper we only deal with processes with an at most countable state space.

Open Quantum Random Walks and Quantum Markov chains on Trees II: The recurrence

In the present paper, we construct QMC (Quantum Markov Chains) associated with Open Quantum Random Walks such that the transition operator of the chain is defined by OQRW and the restriction of QMC to the commutative subalgebra coincides with the distribution of OQRW. Furthermore, we first propose a new construction of QMC on trees, which is an extension of QMC considered in Ref. [9]. Using such a construction, we are able to construct QMCs on tress associated with OQRW. Our investigation leads to the detection of the phase transition phenomena within the proposed scheme. This kind of phenomena appears first time in this direction. Moreover, mean entropies of QMCs are calculated.

Entropy of Quantum Markov states on Cayley trees

In this paper, we continue the investigation of quantum Markov states (QMS) and define their mean entropies. Such entropies are explicitly computed under certain conditions. The present work takes a huge leap forward at tackling one of the most important open problems in quantum probability which concerns the calculations of mean entropies of quantum Markov fields. Moreover, it opens new perspective for the generalization of many interesting results related to the one dimensional quantum Markov states and chains to multi-dimensional cases.

Open Quantum Random Walks and Quantum Markov chains on Trees I: Phase transitions

In the present paper, we construct QMC (Quantum Markov Chains) associated with Open Quantum Random Walks such that the transition operator of the chain is defined by OQRW and the restriction of QMC to the commutative subalgebra coincides with the distribution $P_ρ$ of OQRW. However, we are going to look at the probability distribution as a Markov field over the Cayley tree. Such kind of consideration allows us to investigated phase transition phenomena associated for OQRW within QMC scheme. Furthermore, we first propose a new construction of QMC on trees, which is an extension of QMC considered in Ref. [10]. Using such a construction, we are able to construct QMCs on tress associated with OQRW. Our investigation leads to the detection of the phase transition phenomena within the proposed scheme. This kind of phenomena appears first time in this direction. Moreover, mean entropies of QMCs are calculated.

Quantum Markov Chains on the Comb graphs: Ising model

In the present paper, we construct quantum Markov chains (QMC) over the Comb graphs. As an application of this construction, it is proved the existence of the disordered phase for the Ising type models (within QMC scheme) over the Comb graphs. Moreover, it is also established that the associated QMC has clustering property with respect to translations of the graph. We stress that this paper is the first one where a nontrivial example of QMC over non-regular graphs is given.

Refinement of quantum Markov states on trees

In the present paper, we propose a refinement for the notion of quantum Markov states (QMS) on trees. A structure theorem for QMS on general trees is proved. We notice that any restriction of QMS in the sense of Ref. \cite{AccFid03} is not necessarily to be a QMS. It turns out that localized QMS has the mentioned property which is called \textit{sub-Markov states}, this allows us to characterize translation invariant QMS on regular trees.

On the Limit of Superposition States

In this paper, we study the structure of a family of superposition states on tensor algebras. The correlation functions of the considered states are described through a new kind of positive definite kernels valued in the dual of C$^\ast$-algebras, so-called Schur kernels. Mainly, we show the existence of the limiting state of a net of superposition states over an arbitrary locally finite graph. Furthermore, we show that this limiting state enjoys a mixing property and an $α$-mixing property in the case of the multi-dimensional integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^ν$.

Block Markov Chains on Trees

We introduce block Markov chains (BMCs) indexed by an infinite rooted tree. It turns out that BMCs define a new class of tree-indexed Markovian processes. We clarify the structure of BMCs in connection with Markov chains (MCs) and Markov random fields (MRFs). Mainly, show that probability measures which are BMCs for every root are indeed Markov chains (MCs) and yet they form a strict subclass of Markov random fields (MRFs) on the considered tree. Conversely, a class of MCs which are BMCs is characterized. Furthermore, we establish that in the one-dimensional case the class of BMCs coincides with MCs. However, a slight perturbation of the one-dimensional lattice leads to us to an example of BMCs which are not MCs appear.
