Deflated Hermitian Lanczos Methods for Multiple Right-Hand Sides

A deflated and restarted Lanczos algorithm to solve hermitian linear systems, and at the same time compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors for application to multiple right-hand sides, is described. For the first right-hand side, eigenvectors with small eigenvalues are computed while simultaneously solving the linear system. Two versions of this algorithm are given. The first is called Lan-DR and is based on conjugate gradient (CG) implementation of the Lanczos algorithm. This version will be optimal for the hermitian positive definite case. The second version is called MinRes-DR and is based on the minimum residual (MinRes) implementation of Lanczos algorithm. This version is optimal for indefinite hermitian systems where the CG algorithm is subject to instabilities. For additional right-hand sides, we project over the calculated eigenvectors to speed up convergence. The algorithms used for subsequent right-hand sides are called D-CG and D-MinRes respectively. After some introductory examples are given, we show tests for the case of Wilson fermions at kappa critical. A considerable speed up in the convergence is observed compared to unmodified CG and MinRes.

Improved Seed Methods for Symmetric Positive Definite Linear Equations with Multiple Right-hand Sides

We consider symmetric positive definite systems of linear equations with multiple right-hand sides. The seed conjugate gradient method solves one right-hand side with the conjugate gradient method and simultaneously projects over the Krylov subspace thus developed for the other right-hand sides. Then the next system is solved and used to seed the remaining ones. Rounding error in the conjugate gradient method limits how much the seeding can improve convergence. We propose three changes to the seed conjugate gradient method: only the first right-hand side is used for seeding, this system is solved past convergence, and the roundoff error is controlled with some reorthogonalization. We will show that results are actually better with only one seeding, even in the case of related right-hand sides. Controlling rounding error gives the potential for rapid convergence for the second and subsequent right-hand sides.

Deflated and restarted symmetric Lanczos methods for eigenvalues and linear equations with multiple right-hand sides

A deflated restarted Lanczos algorithm is given for both solving symmetric linear equations and computing eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The restarting limits the storage so that finding eigenvectors is practical. Meanwhile, the deflating from the presence of the eigenvectors allows the linear equations to generally have good convergence in spite of the restarting. Some reorthogonalization is necessary to control roundoff error, and several approaches are discussed. The eigenvectors generated while solving the linear equations can be used to help solve systems with multiple right-hand sides. Experiments are given with large matrices from quantum chromodynamics that have many right-hand sides.

Lattice QCD with a twisted mass term and a strange quark

There are three quarks with masses at or below the characteristic scale of QCD dynamics: up, down and strange. However, twisted mass lattice QCD relies on quark doublets. Various options for including three quark flavors within the twisted mass approach are explored by studying the kaon masses, both analytically (through chiral Lagrangians) and numerically (through lattice simulations). Advantages and disadvantages are revealed for each ``strange and twisted'' option.

The Spectrum of tmLQCD with Quark and Link Smearing

The effect of using smeared sink operators on the hadron spectrum is studied for quenched twisted mass lattice QCD with up, down, and strange quarks. Gaussian smearing is used for quark fields, and stout link smearing for gauge fields. Smeared correlators are found to be dominated by the ground state with a small contribution from excited states, leading to an improved determination of some ground state masses.

Strange quarks in quenched twisted mass lattice QCD

Two twisted doublets, one containing the up and down quarks and the other containing the strange quark with an SU(2)-flavor partner, are used for studies in the meson sector. The relevant chiral perturbation theory is presented, and quenched QCD simulations (where the partner of the strange quark is not active) are performed. Pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants are computed; the vector and scalar mesons are also discussed. A comparison is made to the case of an untwisted strange quark, and some effects due to quenching, discretization, and the definition of maximal twist are explored.

Maximal twist and the spectrum of quenched twisted mass lattice QCD

Results on the hadron masses for a degenerate doublet of up and down quarks from quenched twisted mass lattice QCD at maximal twist are presented. Two definitions of maximal twist are used and the hadron masses for these definitions are compared. Mass splittings within the Delta(1232) multiplet due to flavor breaking effects are discussed.

The hadron spectrum from twisted mass QCD with a strange quark

Various suggestions exist for incorporating the strange quark into twisted mass QCD. One option for quenched simulations is to employ two twisted doublets, (u,d) and (c,s), with separate twist angles. Working in the isospin limit, preliminary results for the quenched spectrum of strange hadrons are presented, with both twist angles tuned to pi/2. Splittings within the mass multiplets provide some insight into the symmetry breaking effects of twisted mass lattice QCD.

Spectrum of quenched twisted mass lattice QCD at maximal twist

Hadron masses are computed from quenched twisted mass lattice QCD for a degenerate doublet of up and down quarks with the twist angle set to pi/2, since this maximally twisted theory is expected to be free of linear discretization errors. Two separate definitions of the twist angle are used, and the hadron masses for these two cases are compared. The flavor breaking, that can arise due to twisting, is discussed in the context of mass splittings within the Delta(1232) multiplet.

Twisted mass QCD for the pion electromagnetic form factor

The pion form factor is computed using quenched twisted mass QCD and the GMRES-DR matrix inverter. The momentum averaging procedure of Frezzotti and Rossi is used to remove leading lattice spacing artifacts, and numerical results for the form factor show the expected improvement with respect to the standard Wilson action. Although some matrix inverters are known to fail when applied to twisted mass QCD, GMRES-DR is found to be a viable and powerful option. Results obtained for the pion form factor are consistent with the published results from other O(a) improved actions and are also consistent with the available experimental data.

Pion form factor with twisted mass QCD

The pion form factor is calculated using quenched twisted mass QCD with beta=6.0 and maximal twisting angle omega=pi/2. Two pion masses and several values of momentum transfer are considered. The momentum averaging procedure of Frezzotti and Rossi is used to reduce lattice spacing errors, and numerical results are consistent with the expected O(a) improvement.

Effects of light scalar mesons in $η\to 3π$ decay

We study the role of a possible nonet of light scalar mesons in the still interesting $η\to 3π$ decay process, with the primary motivation of learning more about the scalars themselves. The framework is a conventional non-linear chiral Lagrangian of pseudoscalars and vectors, extended to include the scalars. The parameters involving the scalars were previously obtained to fit the s-wave $ππ$ and $π$K scatterings in the region up to about 1 GeV as well as the strong decay $η' \to ηππ$. At first, one might expect a large enhancement from diagrams including a light $σ(560)$. However there is an amusing cancellation mechanism which prevents this from occurring. In the simplest model there is an enhancement of about 13 per cent in the \e3p decay rate due to the scalars. In a more complicated model which includes derivative type symmetry breakers, the cancellation is modified and the scalars contribute about 30 percent of the total decay rate (although the total is not significantly changed). The vectors do not contribute much. Our model produces a reasonable estimate for the related $a_0(980)-f_0(980)$ mixing strength, which has been a topic of current debate. Promising directions for future work along the present line are suggested.
