Resolving the problem of complex sound velocity in binary Bose mixtures with attractive intercomponent interactions

In 2015 Dmitry Petrov theoretically suggested that, in a binary mixture of bosons a quantum liquid droplet may arise due to the competition between attractive intercomponent and repulsive intracomponent forces. Although this prediction has been confirmed experimentally, the model by itself suffers from a serious conceptual problem: The low - lying excitation spectrum manifests a purely imaginary phonon velocity, $c_d^2 < 0$. In the present work, we develop a self consistent theory of two-component Bose systems with attractive interspecies interactions, which accurately takes into account pair correlations in terms of anomalous and mixed densities. We have shown that this procedure is able to resolve the problem of $c_d^2 < 0$. Limiting ourselves with a symmetric Bose mixture at zero temperature, we have found a region of stability in which a droplet can survive.

On the anomalous density of a dilute homogeneous Bose gas

Measurement of numerical values of the anomalous density, $σ$, which plays important role in Bose -- Einstein condensation, and, especially, determination of its sign, has been a long standing problem. We develop Hartree -- Fock -- Bogoliubov theory taking account arbitrary phase of the condensate wave function. We show that, the sign of $σ$ directly related to the phase, and, hence is not observable. Despite this, its absolute value can be extracted from measurements of the sound velocity and condensed fraction. We present theoretical prediction for $\vert σ\vert$ for a BEC in a uniform box.

Hugenholtz -- Pines relations and the critical temperature of a Rabi coupled binary Bose system

Using a theoretical field Gaussian approximation we have studied Rabi coupled binary Bose system at low temperatures. We have derived extended Hugenholtz - Pines relations taking into account one body interaction (e.g. Rabi coupling) and studied the critical temperature $T_c$ of Bose-Einstein condensate transition. We have shown that, the shift of $T_c$ due to this interaction can not exceed $\sim 60 \%$ and goes to a plateau with increasing the parameter $Ω_R/T_{c}^{0}$, where $Ω_R$ is the intensity of the coupling and $T_{c}^{0}$ is the critical temperature of the system with $Ω_R=0$. Moreover, the shift is always positive and does not depend on the sign of the one body interaction.

Self-consistent theory of a homogeneous binary Bose mixture with strong repulsive interspecies interaction

Multicomponent quantum gases are ideal platforms to study fundamental phenomena arising from the mutual interaction between different constituents. Particularly, due to the repulsive interactions between two species, the system may exhibit a phase separation. We develop a mean-field-based theory for a two-component Bose mixture, which is equivalent to the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation, and derive analytical expressions for the phase boundary and miscibility. The majority of existing theories, which are valid only for weakly interacting Bose gases, predict that the phase boundary is determined by the criterion $g_{ab}\leqslant\sqrt{g_{aa} g_{bb}}$ (where $g_{ab}$ is a coupling constant between the components $a$ and $b$). We show that in the Bose-Einstein-condensation phase ($T\leqslant T_c$) the system may remain in a stable and miscible phase also for larger values of $g_{ab}$, depending on the gas parameter $γ$ and temperature.

Defining a critical temperature of a crossover from BEC to the normal phase in anisotropic quantum magnets

We address the problem of identifying the critical temperature in a crossover from the Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase to the normal phase. For this purpose we study the temperature dependence of magnetization of spin-gapped quantum magnets described by BEC of triplons. We have calculated the heat capacity $C_H$ at constant field and fluctuations in magnetization in a spin-gapped quantum magnet using the Hartree-Fock-Bogouliubov approximation and found optimized parameters of the Hamiltonian of triplon gas. In the region of phase transition, the heat capacity $C_H$ is smeared out due to the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction. The sharp maximum of the fluctuations in the magnetization is identified as the critical temperature of the crossover.

Effects of exchange and weak Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya anisotropies on thermodynamic characteristics of spin-gapped magnets

We study the modification of low temperature properties of quantum magnets such as magnetization, heat capacity, energy spectrum, and densities of condensed and noncondensed quasiparticles (triplons) due to anisotropies in the framework of mean-field based approach. We show that in contrast to exchange anisotropy (EA) interaction, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction modifies the physics dramatically. Particularly, it changes the sign of the anomalous density in the whole range of temperatures. Its critical behavior is slightly modified also by the EA. We have found that the shift of the critical temperature of phase transition (or crossover caused by DM interaction) is positive and significant. Using the experimental data on the magnetization of the compound TlCuCl$_3$, we have found optimal values for the strengths of EA and DM interactions. The spectrum of the energy of low lying excitations has also been investigated and found to develop a linear dispersion similar to Goldstone mode with a negligibly small anisotropy gap.

Critical behavior of Tan's contact for bosonic systems with a fixed chemical potential

The temperature dependence of Tan's contact parameter $C$ and its derivatives for spin gapped quantum magnets are investigated. We use the paradigm of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) to describe the low temperature properties of quasiparticles in the system known as triplons. Since the number of particles and the condensate fraction are not fixed we use the $μVT$ ensemble to calculate the thermodynamic quantities. The interactions are treated at the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation level. We obtained the temperature dependence of $C$ and its derivative with respect to temperature and applied magnetic field both above and below $T_c$ of the phase transition from the normal phase to BEC. We have shown that $C$ is regular, while its derivatives are discontinuous at $T_c$ in accordance with Ehrenfest's classification of phase transitions. Moreover, we have found a sign change in $\partial C/\partial T$ close to the critical temperature. As to the quantum critical point, $C$ and its derivatives are regular as a function of the control parameter $r$, which induces the quantum phase transition. At very low temperatures, one may evaluate $C$ simply from the expression $C=m^2μ^2/{\bar a}^{4}$, where the only parameter effective mass of quasiparticles should be estimated. We propose a method for measuring of Tan's contact for spin gapped dimerized magnets.

Spin-gapped magnets with weak anisotropies I: Constraints on the phase of the condensate wave function

We study the thermodynamic properties of dimerized spin-gapped quantum magnets with and without exchange anisotropy (EA) and Dzyaloshinsky and Moriya (DM) anisotropies within the mean-field approximation (MFA). For this purpose we obtain the thermodynamic potential $Ω$ of a triplon gas taking into account the strength of DM interaction up to second order. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to self-energies $Σ_n$ and $Σ_{an}$ yields the equation for $X_{1,2}=Σ_n\pmΣ_{an}-μ$, which define the dispersion of quasiparticles $E_k=\sqrt{ε_k+X_1}\sqrt{ε_k+X_2}$ where $ε_k$ is the bare dispersion of triplons. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to the magnitude $ρ_0$ and the phase $Θ$ of triplon condensate leads to coupled equations for $ρ_0$ and $Θ$. We discuss the restrictions on $ρ_0$ and $Θ$ imposed by these equations for systems with and without anisotropy. The requirement of dynamical stability conditions $(X_1>0, X_2>0)$ in equilibrium, as well as the Hugenholtz-Pines theorem, particularly for isotropic Bose condensate, impose certain conditions to the physical solutions of these equations. It is shown that the phase angle of a purely homogenous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) without any anisotropy may only take values $Θ=πn $ (n=0,$\pm 1,\pm 2$...) while that of BEC with even a tiny DM interaction results in $Θ=π/2+2πn$. In contrast to the widely used Hartree-Fock-Popov approximation, which allows arbitrary phase angle, our approach predicts that the phase angle may have only discrete values, while the phase of the wave function of the whole system remains arbitrary as expected. The consequences of this phase locking for interference of two Bose condensates and to their possible Josephson junction is studied.

Characteristic temperatures of a triplon system of dimerized quantum magnets

Exploiting the analogy between ultracold atomic gases and the system of triplons, we study magneto-thermodynamic properties of dimerized quantum magnets in the framework of Bose -Einstein condensation (BEC). Particularly, introducing the inversion (or Joule - Thomson) temperature $T_{JT}$ as the point where Joule - Thomson coefficient of an isenthalpic process changes its sign, we show that for a simple paramagnet, this temperature is infinite, while for three-dimensional (3D) dimerized quantum magnets it is finite and always larger than the critical temperature $T_c$ of BEC. Below the inversion temperature $T<T_{JT}$ the system of triplons may be in a liquid phase, which undergoes a transition into a superfluid phase at $T\le T_c<T_{JT}$. The dependence of the inversion temperature on the external magnetic field $T_{JT} (H)$ has been calculated for quantum magnets of TlCuCl$_3$ and Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$.

Tan's contact as an indicator of completeness and self-consistency of a theory

It is well known that, Tan's contact could be calculated by using any of following three methods: by the asymptotic behavior of momentum distribution; by Tan's adiabatic sweep theorem; or by the operator product expansion as an expectation value of the interaction term. We argue that, if a theory describing Bose (or Fermi) system with the only contact interaction is self consistent, then it should lead to the same result in all three cases. As an example we considered MFT based approaches and established that among existing approximations of MFT, the Hartree - Fock - Bogoliubov (HFB) approach is the most self consistent. Actually, HFB is able to describe existing experimental data on Tan's contact for dilute Bose gas, but fails to predict its expected behavior at large gas parameter $(γ> 0.015)$. So, for appropriate description of properties of a Bose gas even at zero temperature, this approximation needs to be expanded by taking into account fluctuations in higher order then the second one.

Gr{ü}neisen parameter of quantum magnets with spin gap

Using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach we obtained analytical expressions for thermodynamic quantities of the system of triplons in spin gapped quantum magnets such as magnetization, heat capacity and the magnetic Gr{ü}neisen parameter $Γ_H$. Near the critical temperature, $Γ_H$ is discontinuous and changes its sign upon the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplons. On the other hand, in the widely used Hartree-Fock-Popov (HFP) approach there is no discontinuity neither in the heat capacity nor in the Gr{ü}neisen parameter. We predict that in the low-temperature limit and near the critical magnetic field $H_c$, $Γ_H$ diverges as $Γ_H\sim 1/T^{2}$, while it scales as $Γ_H\sim 1/(H-H_c)$ as the magnetic field approaches the quantum critical point at $H_c$.

Bose - Einstein condensation of triplons with a weakly broken U(1) symmetry

The low-temperature properties of certain quantum magnets can be described in terms of a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetic quasiparticles (triplons). Some mean-field approaches (MFA) to describe these systems, based on the standard grand canonical ensemble, do not take the anomalous density into account and leads to an internal inconsistency, as it has been shown by Hohenberg and Martin, and may therefore produce unphysical results. Moreover, an explicit breaking of the U(1) symmetry as observed, for example, in TlCuCl3 makes the application of MFA more complicated. In the present work, we develop a self-consistent MFA approach, similar to the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approximation in the notion of representative statistical ensembles, including the effect of a weakly broken U(1) symmetry. We apply our results on experimental data of the quantum magnet TlCuCl3 and show that magnetization curves and the energy dispersion can be well described within this approximation assuming that the BEC scenario is still valid. We predict that the shift of the critical temperature Tc due to a finite exchange anisotropy is rather substantial even when the anisotropy parameter γis small, e.g., ΔT_c \approx 10%$ of Tc in H = 6T and for γ\approx 4 μeV.

Thermodynamics of noninteracting bosonic gases in cubic optical lattices versus ideal homogeneous Bose gases

We have studied thermodynamic properties of noninteracting gases in periodic lattice potential at arbitrary integer fillings and compared them with that of ideal homogeneous gases. Deriving explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities and performing exact numerical calculations we have found that the dependence of e.g. entropy and energy on the temperature in the normal phase is rather weak. In the Bose condensed phase their power dependence on the reduced temperature is nearly linear, which is in contrast to that of ideal homogeneous gases. We evaluated the discontinuity in the slope of the specific heat which turned out to be approximately the same as that of the ideal homogeneous Bose gas for filling factor $ν=1$. With increasing $ν$ it decreases as the inverse of $ν$. These results may serve as a checkpoint for various experiments on optical lattices as well as theoretical studies of weakly interacting Bose systems in periodic potentials being a starting point for perturbative calculations.

Critical temperature of noninteracting bosonic gases in cubic optical lattices at arbitrary integer fillings

We have shown that the critical temperature of a Bose-Einstein condensate to a normal phase transition of noninteracting bosons in cubic optical lattices has a linear dependence on the filling factor, especially at large densities. The condensed fraction exhibits a linear power law dependence on temperature in contrast to the case of ideal homogeneous Bose gases.

Phase Transitions in Three-Dimensional Bosonic Systems in Optical Lattices

We formulate the Collective Quantum Field Theory for three-dimensional bosonic optical lattices and evaluate its consequences in a mean-field approximation to two collective fields, proposed by Fred Cooper et al. and in a lowest-order Variational Perturbation Theory (VPT). It is shown that present mean-field approximation predicts some essential features of the experimentally observed dependence of the critical temperature on the coupling strength and a second - order quantum phase transition. In contrast to a recent prediction for atomic gases by Fred Cooper et. al., we find no superfluid state with zero condensate fraction.

The effects of disorder in dimerized quantum magnets in mean field approximations

We study theoretically the effects of disorder on Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of bosonic triplon quasiparticles in doped dimerized quantum magnets. The condensation occurs in a strong enough magnetic field Hc, where the concentration of bosons in the random potential is sufficient to form the condensate. The effect of doping is partly modeled by delta - correlated disorder potential, which (i) leads to the uniform renormalization of the system parameters and (ii) produces disorder in the system with renormalized parameters. These approaches can explain qualitatively the available magnetization data in the Tl_(1-x)K_(x)CuCl_3 compound taken as an example. In addition to the magnetization, we found that the speed of the Bogoliubov mode has a peak as a function of doping parameter, x. No evidence of the pure Bose glass phase has been obtained in the BEC regime.

Quantum phase transitions in optical lattices beyond Bogoliubov approximation

We study the quantum phase transition in optical lattices using ordinary Bose Hubbard Hamiltonian within two loop approximation in variational perturbation theory. We have shown that this approximation can reproduce superfluid Mott insulator transition in contrast to the simple Bogoliubov or Hartee - Fock - Popov approximations. The superfluid fraction and ground state energy per particle vs input parameters of the model are studied.

High-field instability of field-induced triplon Bose-Einstein condensate

We study properties of magnetic field-induced Bose-Einstein condensate of triplons as a function of temperature and the field within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach including the anomalous density. We show that the magnetization is continuous across the transition, in agreement with the experiment. In sufficiently strong fields the condensate becomes unstable due to triplon-triplon repulsion. As a result, the system is characterized by two critical magnetic fields: one producing the condensate and the other destroying it. We show that nonparabolic triplon dispersion arising due to the gapped bare spectrum and the crystal structure has a strong influence on the phase diagram.
