A rigorous benchmarking of methods for SARS-CoV-2 lineage abundance estimation in wastewater

In light of the continuous transmission and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 coupled with a significant decline in clinical testing, there is a pressing need for scalable, cost-effective, long-term, passive surveillance tools to effectively monitor viral variants circulating in the population. Wastewater genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 has arrived as an alternative to clinical genomic surveillance, allowing to continuously monitor the prevalence of viral lineages in communities of various size at a fraction of the time, cost, and logistic effort and serving as an early warning system for emerging variants, critical for developed communities and especially for underserved ones. Importantly, lineage prevalence estimates obtained with this approach aren't distorted by biases related to clinical testing accessibility and participation. However, the relative performance of bioinformatics methods used to measure relative lineage abundances from wastewater sequencing data is unknown, preventing both the research community and public health authorities from making informed decisions regarding computational tool selection. Here, we perform comprehensive benchmarking of 18 bioinformatics methods for estimating the relative abundance of SARS-CoV-2 (sub)lineages in wastewater by using data from 36 in vitro mixtures of synthetic lineage and sublineage genomes. In addition, we use simulated data from 78 mixtures of lineages and sublineages co-occurring in the clinical setting with proportions mirroring their prevalence ratios observed in real data. Importantly, we investigate how the accuracy of the evaluated methods is impacted by the sequencing technology used, the associated error rate, the read length, read depth, but also by the exposure of the synthetic RNA mixtures to wastewater, with the goal of capturing the effects induced by the wastewater matrix, including RNA fragmentation and degradation.

Controlling the Outbreak of COVID-19: A Noncooperative Game Perspective

COVID-19 is a global epidemic. Till now, there is no remedy for this epidemic. However, isolation and social distancing are seemed to be effective preventive measures to control this pandemic. Therefore, in this paper, an optimization problem is formulated that accommodates both isolation and social distancing features of the individuals. To promote social distancing, we solve the formulated problem by applying a noncooperative game that can provide an incentive for maintaining social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, the sustainability of the lockdown policy is interpreted with the help of our proposed game-theoretic incentive model for maintaining social distancing where there exists a Nash equilibrium. Finally, we perform an extensive numerical analysis that shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of achieving the desired social-distancing to prevent the outbreak of the COVID-19 in a noncooperative environment. Numerical results show that the individual incentive increases more than 85% with an increasing percentage of home isolation from 25% to 100% for all considered scenarios. The numerical results also demonstrate that in a particular percentage of home isolation, the individual incentive decreases with an increasing number of individuals.

An Efficient Paging Algorithm for Multi-Carrier CDMA System

To cope with the increasing demand of wireless communication services multi-carrier systems are being used. Radio resources are very limited and efficient usages of these resources are inevitable to get optimum performance of the system. Paging channel is a low-bandwidth channel and one of the most important channels on which system performance depends significantly. Therefore it is vulnerable to even moderate overloads. In this paper, an efficient paging algorithm, Concurrent Search, is proposed for efficient use of paging channel in Multi- carrier CDMA system instead of existing sequential searching algorithm. It is shown by the simulation that the paging performance in proposed algorithm is far better than the existing system.

The Framework for Implementing ECommerce: The Role of Bank and Telecom in Bangladesh

In this paper, we describe an effective framework for adapting electronic commerce or e-commerce services in developing countries like Bangladesh. The internet has opened up a new horizon for commerce, namely electronic commerce (e-commerce). It entails the use of the internet in the marketing, identification, payment and delivery of goods and services. At present internet facilities are available in Bangladesh. Slowly, but steadily these facilities are holding a strong position in every aspects of our life. E-commerce is one of those sectors which need more attention if we want to be a part of global business. Bangladesh is far-far away to adapt the main stream of e-commerce application. Though government is shouting to take the challenges of e-commerce, but they do not take the right step, that is why e-commerce dose not make any real contribution in our socio-economic life. Here we propose a model which may develop the e-commerce infrastructure of Bangladesh.
