Origin of the quantum group symmetry in 3d quantum gravity

It is well-known that quantum groups are relevant to describe the quantum regime of 3d gravity. They encode a deformation of the gauge symmetries parametrized by the value of the cosmological constant. They appear as a form of regularization either through the quantization of the Chern-Simons formulation or the state sum approach of Turaev-Viro. Such deformations are perplexing from a continuum and classical picture since the action is defined in terms of undeformed gauge invariance. We present here a novel way to derive from first principle and from the classical action such quantum group deformation. The argument relies on two main steps. First we perform a canonical transformation, which deformed the gauge invariance and the boundary symmetries, and makes them depend on the cosmological constant. Second we implement a discretization procedure relying on a truncation of the degrees of freedom from the continuum.

Ribbon operators in the Semidual lattice code model

In this work, we provide a rigorous definition of ribbon operators in the Semidual Kitaev lattice model and study their properties. These operators are essential for understanding quasi-particle excitations within topologically ordered systems. We show that the ribbon operators generate quasi-particle excitations at the ends of the ribbon and reveal themselves as irreducible representations of the Bicrossproduct quantum group $M(H)=H^{\text{cop}}\lrbicross H$ or $M(H)^{\text{op}}$ depending on their chirality or local orientation.

Canonical transformations generated by the boundary volume: Unimodular and non-Abelian teleparallel gravity

Recently, a new choice of variables was identified to understand how the quantum group structure appeared in three-dimensional gravity [1]. These variables are introduced via a canonical transformation generated by a boundary term. We show that this boundary term can actually be taken to be the volume of the boundary and that the new variables can be defined in any dimension greater than three. In addition, we study the associated metric and teleparallel formalisms. The former is a variant of the Henneaux--Teitelboim model for unimodular gravity. The latter provides a non-Abelian generalization of the usual Abelian teleparallel formulation.

Semidual Kitaev lattice model and tensor network representation

Kitaev's lattice models are usually defined as representations of the Drinfeld quantum double $D(H)=H\bowtie H^{*\text{op}} $, as an example of a double cross product quantum group. We propose a new version based instead on $M(H)=H^{\text{cop}}\blacktriangleright\!\!\!\triangleleft H$ as an example of Majid's bicrossproduct quantum group, related by semidualisation or `quantum Born reciprocity' to $D(H)$. Given a finite-dimensional Hopf algebra $H$, we show that a quadrangulated oriented surface defines a representation of the bicrossproduct quantum group $H^{\text{cop}}\blacktriangleright\!\!\!\triangleleft H$. Even though the bicrossproduct has a more complicated and entangled coproduct, the construction of this new model is relatively natural as it relies on the use of the covariant Hopf algebra actions. Working locally, we obtain an exactly solvable Hamiltonian for the model and provide a definition of the ground state in terms of a tensor network representation.

Electromagnetic duality and central charge from first order formulation

In the context of the infrared triangle there have been recent discussions on the existence and the role of dual charges. We present a new viewpoint on dual magnetic charges in $p$-form theories, and argue that they can be inherited from the charges of a first order formulation as a topological BF theory with potential. This happens because, depending on the spacetime dimension and on the form degree, the so-called translational gauge symmetries of BF theory become reducible and therefore admit zero-modes. Although such zero-modes lead to trivial symmetries of the $p$-form theory, they are associated with non-trivial charges. These turn out to be precisely the dual magnetic charges. The centrally-extended current algebra of electric and magnetic charges in the $p$-form theory then descends naturally from that of BF theory. This is an effort towards finding an existence criterion for dual charges.

First-order formulation of teleparallel gravity and dual loop gravity

There are at least two ways to encode gravity into geometry: Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) for the metric tensor, and teleparallel gravity, where torsion as opposed to curvature encodes the dynamics of the gravitational degrees of freedom. The main purpose of the paper is to explore the relation between loop gravity and teleparallel gravity. We argue that these two formulations of gravity are related to two different discretizations of the Einstein--Cartan action, which were studied recently in the literature. The first discretization leads to the \emph{loop gravity} kinematical phase space where the zero torsion condition is enforced {first} and the other is the \emph{dual loop gravity} kinematical phase space where curvature is imposed to vanish {first}. Our argument is based on the observation that the GR first-order Einstein--Cartan action can also be seen as a first-order action for teleparallel gravity up to a boundary term. The results of our paper suggest that the \emph{dual loop gravity} framework is a natural discretization of teleparallel gravity, whereas \emph{loop gravity} is naturally related to the standard GR metric description.
