MINER: Multi-crop INference-time Enhancement for Rare-Object Retrieval with Frozen Dual Encoders

Text-to-image retrieval with frozen dual encoders degrades when the query names a small, visually subordinate object in a cluttered scene: a single global image embedding underrepresents the localized visual evidence. We present MINER, a training-free inference framework that augments a frozen dual encoder's global image embedding with a small bank of region-level embeddings and a hubness-correcting similarity rescoring, recovering visual evidence that global pooling underweights. To evaluate this setting, we introduce ROCS, a benchmark built from high-clutter subsets of Flickr30K and MS COCO whose images are re-captioned to name a single low-salience object. Experiments on CLIP, SigLIP, and SigLIP 2 show that MINER improves retrieval on every backbone, on ROCS and on the standard splits. Analyses show that these gains come primarily from broader spatial coverage rather than precise crop placement, revealing a simple and general way to recover localized evidence from frozen representations. Can Coding Agents Migrate to Post-Quantum Cryptography?

A program migrated to post-quantum cryptography can verify its own signatures while producing keys or signatures that another implementation rejects. We introduce a contract-based task for migrating a Go file signer from RSA to ML-DSA-44, and compare coding agents with and without structured checker feedback. Both conditions receive the contract, compiler, documentation, and OpenSSL. Across 160 attempts in four local-agent configurations, twelve final patches pass local verification but fail external requirements. Checker access does not increase the observed completion rate in any comparison. Recorded traces show unresolved defects and checks invoked only after a patch is correct. Serving settings also affect completion: reducing only Qwen3.8's context window from 128K to 32K lowers full passes from 36/40 to 4/40. Four exploratory trials using GPT-6 Astra through Codex and Claude Fable 5.1 through Claude Code pass all 40 checks, including both baselines. These findings support evaluating interoperability separately from local agreement and reporting harness and serving limits alongside agent results.

LARE: Low-Attention Region Encoding for Text-Image Retrieval

Image retrieval in crowded scenes is particularly challenging due to the salience bias of conventional visual encoders, which tend to focus on dominant objects while neglecting low-attention regions that are often crucial for fine-grained retrieval. We propose LARE (Low-Attention Region Encoding), a framework that explicitly models these overlooked regions. LARE adopts a dual-encoding strategy that encodes low-attention regions of an image and the full image in parallel, leading to more diverse and informative image embeddings. To evaluate image retrieval performance in challenging crowded scenes, we introduce Dense-Set, a challenging subset derived from COCO and Flickr30K. In this subset, images are re-captioned to provide richer descriptions of low-attention or previously overlooked regions. This dataset highlights the limitations of existing retrieval models and enables a more rigorous evaluation under densely crowded scene conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework improves retrieval performance by preserving subtle, non-dominant visual cues within the shared latent space.
