Holographic complexity of rotating black holes

Within the framework of the "complexity equals action" and "complexity equals volume" conjectures, we study the properties of holographic complexity for rotating black holes. We focus on a class of odd-dimensional equal-spinning black holes for which considerable simplification occurs. We study the complexity of formation, uncovering a direct connection between complexity of formation and thermodynamic volume for large black holes. We consider also the growth-rate of complexity, finding that at late-times the rate of growth approaches a constant, but that Lloyd's bound is generically violated.

Traversability of Multi-Boundary Wormholes

We generalize the Gao-Jafferis-Wall construction of traversable two-sided wormholes to multi-boundary wormholes. In our construction, we take the background spacetime to be multi-boundary black holes in AdS$_3$. We work in the hot limit where the dual CFT state in certain regions locally resembles the thermofield double state. Furthermore, in these regions, the hot limit makes the causal shadow exponentially small. Based on these two features of the hot limit, and with the three-boundary wormhole as our main example, we show that traversability between any two asymptotic regions in a multi-boundary wormhole can be triggered using a double-trace deformation. In particular, the two boundary regions need not have the same temperature and angular momentum. We discuss the non-trivial angular dependence of traversability in our construction, as well as the effect of the causal shadow region.

A measurement-based variational quantum eigensolver

Variational quantum eigensolvers (VQEs) combine classical optimization with efficient cost function evaluations on quantum computers. We propose a new approach to VQEs using the principles of measurement-based quantum computation. This strategy uses entagled resource states and local measurements. We present two measurement-based VQE schemes. The first introduces a new approach for constructing variational families. The second provides a translation of circuit-based to measurement-based schemes. Both schemes offer problem-specific advantages in terms of the required resources and coherence times.

Holographic Complexity and Thermodynamic Volume

We study the holographic complexity conjectures for rotating black holes, uncovering a relationship between the complexity of formation and the thermodynamic volume of the black hole. We suggest that it is the thermodynamic volume and not the entropy that controls the complexity of formation of large black holes in both the Complexity Equals Action and Complexity Equals Volume proposals in general. Our proposal reduces to known results involving the entropy in settings where the thermodynamic volume and entropy are not independent, but has broader scope. Assuming a conjectured inequality is obeyed by the thermodynamic volume, we establish that the complexity of formation is bounded from below by the entropy for large black holes.

Null Hypersurfaces in Kerr-Newman-AdS Black Hole and Super-Entropic Black Hole Spacetimes

A three-dimensional light-like foliation of a spacetime geometry is one particular way of studying its light cone structure and has important applications in numerical relativity. In this paper, we execute such a foliation for the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole geometry and compare it with the lightlike foliations of the Kerr-AdS and Kerr-Newman black holes. We derive the equations that govern this slicing and study their properties. In particular, we find that these null hypersurfaces develop caustics inside the inner horizon of the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, in strong contrast to the Kerr-AdS case. We then take the ultra-spinning limit of the Kerr-Newman-AdS spacetime, leading to what is known as a Super-Entropic black hole, and show that the null hypersurfaces develop caustics at a finite distance outside the event horizon of this black hole. As an application, we construct Kruskal coordinates for both the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole and its ultra-spinning counterpart.

Null hypersurfaces in Kerr-(A)dS spacetimes

For many purposes, a three-dimensional foliation of spacetime is more advantageous to understanding its light cone structure. We derive the equations describing such foliations for the Kerr geometry with non-zero cosmological constant, and show that they reduce to null hypersurfaces in vacuum (anti-)de Sitter spacetime in the limit of zero mass. Furthermore, we find that these null hypersurfaces are free of caustics everywhere for $r>0$. Our construction has applications in numerical studies of rotating black holes, and in defining Kruskal coordinates for rotating black holes with non-zero cosmological constant.

Safe Trinification

In this work, we provide a UV safe Trinification theory in which the Standard Model is embedded. Using recently developed large number-of-flavor techniques, safety is achieved by adding to the theory gauged vector-like fermions. We find that all gauge, scalar quartic, and Yukawa couplings achieve an interacting ultraviolet fixed point below the Planck scale. We find renormalization group flow solutions matching the Standard Model in the IR, indicating a truly UV completion of the Standard Model. Imposing constraints that realistic Higgs, top, bottom, tau and reasonable neutrino masses are recovered, we find the set of allowed solutions to be quite restrictive. Furthermore, the symmetry breaking scale is predicted to be around 10 TeV, making this model vulnerable to experiment.

An Optomechanical Quantum Cavendish Experiment

An open question in experimental physics is the characterization of gravitational effects in quantum regimes. We propose an experimental set-up that uses well-tested techniques in cavity optomechanics to observe the effects of the gravitational interaction between two micro-mechanical oscillators on the interference of the cavity photons through the shifts in the visibility of interfering photons. The gravitational coupling leads to a shift in the period and magnitude of the visibility whose observability is within reach of current technology. We discuss the feasibility of the set-up as well as the effects on entanglement due to gravitational interaction.
