Numerical Analysis of a Variable-Order Time-Fractional Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamics System

We consider an incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model in which the classical first-order time derivatives in the momentum and magnetic induction equations are replaced by variable-order Caputo time-fractional derivatives. This formulation allows the memory effect to vary during the evolution and represents a time-fractional generalization of the incompressible MHD system with nonstationary memory. To approximate the problem, we use a fully discrete scheme combining a finite element discretization in space with an L1-type approximation of the variable-order Caputo operators in time. For this discretization, we establish a discrete stability estimate and also derive an auxiliary corrected discrete energy estimate for the fully discrete solution. Convergence is proved by showing that the kernels generated by the variable-order L1 approximation satisfy the assumptions of an abstract discrete fractional Grönwall theorem, which is then applied to the coupled MHD system. The numerical study consists of four parts. First, representative order profiles are used to examine temporal convergence. Second, consistency with the classical incompressible MHD equations is studied as the fractional orders approach one, using norms of solution differences and deviations in kinetic and magnetic energies. Third, the influence of the variable-order fractional terms on nonlinear evolution is investigated through the periodic divergence-free vortex benchmark, with comparisons based on energy and enstrophy histories, divergence errors, Reynolds-number dependence, and time-integrated diagnostics. Fourth, parameter-space maps show how the parameters defining the variable orders affect global indicators. The results show that the variable orders can noticeably affect the evolution of the energy, enstrophy, and current enstrophy even when the Reynolds number is fixed.

Double-Layer Potentials for a Generalized Bi-Axially Symmetric Helmholtz Equation II

The double-layer potential plays an important role in solving boundary value problems for elliptic equations. All the fundamental solutions of the generalized bi-axially symmetric Helmholtz equation were known, and only for the first one was constructed the theory of potential. Here, in this paper, we aim at constructing theory of double-layer potentials corresponding to the next fundamental solution. By using some properties of one of Appell's hypergeometric functions in two variables, we prove limiting theorems and derive integral equations concerning a denseness of double-layer potentials.

A New Mathematical Formulation of the Governing Equations for the Chemical Compositional Simulation

It is the purpose of this work to develop new approach for chemical compositional reservoir simulation, which may be regarded as a sequential method. The development process can be roughly divided into the following two stages: (1) development of a new mathematical formulation for the sequential chemical compositional reservoir simulation, (2) implementation of a sequential solution approach for chemical compositional reservoir simulation based on the formulation described in this paper. This paper addresses the first stage of the development process by presenting a new mathematical formulation of the chemical compositional reservoir flow equations for the sequential simulation. The newly developed mathematical formulation is extended from the model formulation used in existing chemical compositional simulators. During the model development process, it was discovered that the currently used chemical compositional model estimates the adsorption effect on the transport of a component reasonably well but it violates the principle of mass conservation. The energy conservation equation in the currently used chemical compositional model does not consider any change in the effective pore size caused by adsorption, which leads to inconsistency between the overall compositional balance equations and the energy conservation equation by violating conservation of energy. With these partial differential equations as governing equations, several simulators have been developed. In this article, we propose a formulation to model the change in pore volume due to adsorption that satisfies the conservation laws for mass and energy, and allows applying a sequential solution approach.
