Effective stability for slow time-dependent near-integrable Hamiltonians and application

The aim of this note is to prove a result of effective stability for a non-autonomous perturbation of an integrable Hamiltonian system, provided that the perturbation depends slowly on time. Then we use this result to clarify and extend a stability result of Giorgilli and Zehnder for a mechanical system with an arbitrary time-dependent potential.

Normal forms, stability and splitting of invariant manifolds I. Gevrey Hamiltonians

In this paper, we give a new construction of resonant normal forms with a small remainder for near-integrable Hamiltonians at a quasi-periodic frequency. The construction is based on the special case of a periodic frequency, a Diophantine result concerning the approximation of a vector by independent periodic vectors and a technique of composition of periodic averaging. It enables us to deal with non-analytic Hamiltonians, and in this first part we will focus on Gevrey Hamiltonians and derive normal forms with an exponentially small remainder. This extends a result which was known for analytic Hamiltonians, and only in the periodic case for Gevrey Hamiltonians. As applications, we obtain an exponentially large upper bound on the stability time for the evolution of the action variables and an exponentially small upper bound on the splitting of invariant manifolds for hyperbolic tori, generalizing corresponding results for analytic Hamiltonians.

Normal forms, stability and splitting of invariant manifolds II. Finitely differentiable Hamiltonians

This paper is a sequel to "Normal forms, stability and splitting of invariant manifolds I. Gevrey Hamiltonians", in which we gave a new construction of resonant normal forms with an exponentially small remainder for near-integrable Gevrey Hamiltonians at a quasi-periodic frequency, using a method of periodic approximations. In this second part we focus on finitely differentiable Hamiltonians, and we derive normal forms with a polynomially small remainder. As applications, we obtain a polynomially large upper bound on the stability time for the evolution of the action variables and a polynomially small upper bound on the splitting of invariant manifolds for hyperbolic tori.

A Diophantine duality applied to the KAM and Nekhoroshev theorems

In this paper, we use geometry of numbers to relate two dual Diophantine problems. This allows us to focus on simultaneous approximations rather than small linear forms. As a consequence, we develop a new approach to the perturbation theory for quasi-periodic solutions dealing only with periodic approximations and avoiding classical small divisors estimates. We obtain two results of stability, in the spirit of the KAM and Nekhoroshev theorems, in the model case of a perturbation of a constant vector field on the $n$-dimensional torus. Our first result, which is a Nekhoroshev type theorem, is the construction of a "partial" normal form, that is a normal form with a small remainder whose size depends on the Diophantine properties of the vector. Then, assuming our vector satisfies the Bruno-Rüssmann condition, we construct an "inverted" normal form, recovering the classical KAM theorem of Kolmogorov, Arnold and Moser for constant vector fields on torus.

A geometrical proof of the persistence of normally hyperbolic submanifolds

We present a simple, computation free and geometrical proof of the following classical result: for a diffeomorphism of a manifold, any compact submanifold which is invariant and normally hyperbolic persists under small perturbations of the diffeomorphism. The persistence of a Lipschitz invariant submanifold follows from an application of the Schauder fixed point theorem to a graph transform, while smoothness and uniqueness of the invariant submanifold are obtained through geometrical arguments. Moreover, our proof provides a new result on persistence and regularity of "topologically" normally hyperbolic submanifolds, but without any uniqueness statement.

Optimal stability and instability for near-linear Hamiltonians

In this paper, we will prove a very general result of stability for perturbations of linear integrable Hamiltonian systems, and we will construct an example of instability showing that both our result and our example are optimal. Moreover, in the same spirit as the notion of KAM stable integrable Hamiltonians, we will introduce a notion of effectively stable integrable Hamiltonians, conjecture a characterization of these Hamiltonians and show that our result prove this conjecture in the linear case.

Effective stability for Gevrey and finitely differentiable prevalent Hamiltonians

For perturbations of integrable Hamiltonians systems, the Nekhoroshev theorem shows that all solutions are stable for an exponentially long interval of time, provided the integrable part satisfies a steepness condition and the system is analytic. This fundamental result has been extended in two distinct directions. The first one is due to Niederman, who showed that under the analyticity assumption, the result holds true for a prevalent class of integrable systems which is much wider than the steep systems. The second one is due to Marco-Sauzin but it is limited to quasi-convex integrable systems, for which they showed exponential stability if the system is assumed to be only Gevrey regular. If the system is finitely differentiable, the author showed polynomial stability, still in the quasi-convex case. The goal of this work is to generalize all these results in a unified way, by proving exponential or polynomial stability for Gevrey or finitely differentiable perturbations of prevalent integrable Hamiltonian systems.

Generic Nekhoroshev theory without small divisors

In this article, we present a new approach of Nekhoroshev theory for a generic unperturbed Hamiltonian which completely avoids small divisors problems. The proof is an extension of a method introduced by P. Lochak which combines averaging along periodic orbits with simultaneous Diophantine approximation and uses geometric arguments designed by the second author to handle generic integrable Hamiltonians. This method allows to deal with generic non-analytic Hamiltonians and to obtain new results of generic stability around linearly stable tori.

An example of instability in high-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

In this article, we use a mechanism introduced by Herman, Marco and Sauzin to show that if a perturbation of a quasi-convex integrable Hamiltonian system is not too small with respect to the number of degrees of freedom, then the classical exponential stability estimates do not hold. Indeed, we construct an unstable solution whose drifting time is polynomial with respect to the inverse of the size of the perturbation. A different example was already given by Bourgain and Kaloshin, with a linear time of drift but with a perturbation which is larger than ours. As a consequence, we obtain a better upper bound on the threshold of validity of exponential stability estimates.

Generic super-exponential stability of invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems

In this article, we consider solutions starting close to some linearly stable invariant tori in an analytic Hamiltonian system and we prove results of stability for a super-exponentially long interval of time, under generic conditions. The proof combines classical Birkhoff normal forms and a new method to obtain generic Nekhoroshev estimates developed by the author and L. Niederman in another paper. We will mainly focus on the neighbourhood of elliptic fixed points, the other cases being completely similar.

Nekhoroshev estimates for finitely differentiable quasi-convex Hamiltonians

A major result concerning perturbations of integrable Hamiltonian systems is given by Nekhoroshev estimates, which ensures exponential stability of all solutions provided the system is analytic and the integrable Hamiltonian not too degenerate. In the particular but important case where the latter is quasi-convex, these exponential estimates have been generalized by Marco and Sauzin if the Hamiltonian is Gevrey regular, using a method introduced by Lochak in the analytic case. In this paper, using the same approach we will investigate the situation where the Hamiltonian is assumed to be only finitely differentiable, it is known that exponential stability does not hold but nevertheless we will prove estimates of polynomial stability.
