String theory phenomenology and quantum many body systems

The main idea in the present work is the definition of an experimental proposal for the detection of the number of extra{compact dimensions contained as a core feature in String Theory. This goal will be achieved as a consequence of the fact that the density of states of a bosonic gas does depend upon the number and geometry of the involved space{like dimensions. In particular our idea concerns the detection of the discontinuity of the specific heat at the condensation temperature as a function of the number of particles present in the gas. It will be shown that the corresponding function between these two variables defines a segment of a straight line whose slope depends upon the number of extra{compact dimensions. Resorting to some experiments in the detection of the specific heat of a rubidium condensate the feasibility of this proposal using this kind of atom is also analyzed.

Dark matter as a condensate: Deduction of microscopic properties

In the present work we model dark matter as a Bose-Einstein condensate and the main goal is the deduction of the microscopic properties, namely, mass, number of particles, and scattering length, related to the particles comprised in the corresponding condensate. This task is done introducing in the corresponding model the effects of the thermal cloud of the system. Three physical conditions are imposed, i.e., mechanical equilibrium of the condensate, explanation of the rotation curves of stars belonging to dwarf galaxies, and, finally, the deflection of light due to the presence of dark matter. These three aforementioned expressions allow us to cast the features of the particles in terms of detectable astrophysical variables. Finally, the model is contrasted against observational data and in this manner we obtain values for the involved microscopic parameters of the condensate. The statistical errors are seven and eighteen percent for the scattering length and mass of the dark matter particle, respectively.

Mass bounds for Newtonian bosonic starts in theory of ultra-cold gases

In the present work we address the issue concerning the relation mass versus radius for bosonic stars, all this in the context of the theory of ultra-cold gases in the dilute regime and within the realm of Newtonian gravity. It will be shown that this model predicts a minimum and a maximum for the mass of this kind of stars, contrary to the current belief present in some results in this direction.

Superfluidity as a Tool for Constraining Energy-Momentum Relations

The present work explores the possibilities that superfluidity could offer in the context of quantum gravity phenomenology, at least in the realm of deformed dispersion relations. The experimental proposal involves a Bose-condensed sodiun gas trapped by an isotropic harmonic oscillator potential. A deformed dispersion relation is considered for the particles of the system and its consequences upon the region of superfluidity are

Landau criterion in a Bose-Condensed Sodium Gas

In light of the experimental evidence for the existence of a superfluid region in a Bose--Condensed Sodium gas a theoretical model is put forward. It will be shown that the predictions of the present work do match with the extant experimental readouts. As a by product we also calculate the speed of sound and compare it against the current experimental results.

Elementary Excitations in a BEC with Isotropic Harmonic Trap: Bogoliubov Equations versus Hydrodynamic Formalism

The elementary excitations for a BEC trapped by means of an isotropic harmonic oscillator are studied in the present work. The analysis of these perturbations is done in the context of the Bogoliubov equations and not resorting to the hydrodynamic version. The comparison between these two approaches will allow us to deduce a parameter explaining the role that the scattering length and the trap play in the way in which the frequency of these elementary excitations acquires information about the angular momentum of the corresponding solutions. It will be shown that outside the validity realm of the Thomas_fermi approximation the frequencies of the perturbations cannot inherit the information of the angular momentum codified in the functions escribing the elementary excitations.

Speed of sound in a Bose-Einstein condensate

In the present work we determine the speed of sound in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined by an isotropic harmonic oscillator trap. The deduction of this physical parameter is done resorting to the $N$-body Hamiltonian operator. The single-particle eigenfunctions that have been employed in this formalism are those stemming from the corresponding harmonic oscillator potential, and an expression for the dependence of this speed on the temperature is also deduced. These functions are used in the calculation of the scaterring length, etc. The situation for a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium is evaluated and the corresponding speed of sound is obtained and compared against the known experimental outcomes. The possibility that the solution, to the existing discrepancy between experiment and theoretical predictions, could be given by the Zaremba-Nikuni-Griffin formalism is also explored.

Quantum spacetime fluctuations: Lamb Shift and hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom

We consider the consequences of the presence of metric fluctuations upon the properties of a hydrogen atom. Particularly, we introduce these metric fluctuations in the corresponding effective Schroedinger equation and deduce the modifications that they entail upon the hyperfine structure related to a hydrogen atom. We will find the change that these effects imply for the ground state energy of the system and obtain a bound for its size comparing our theoretical predictions against the experimental uncertainty reported in the literature. In addition, we analyze the corresponding Lamb shift effect emerging from these fluctuations of spacetime. Once again, we will set a bound to these oscillations resorting to the current experimental outcomes

Quantal Definition of the Weak Equivalence Principle

The present work analyzes the meaning of the Weak Equivalence Principle in the context of quantum mechanics. A quantal definition for this principle is introduced. This definition does not require the concept of trajectory and relies upon the phase shift induced by a gravitational field in the context of a quantum interference experiment of two coherent beams of particles. In other words, it resorts to wave properties of the system and not to classical concepts as the idea of trajectory.

Test of some Fundamental Principles in Physics via Quantum Interference with Neutrons and Photons

The limitations and possibilities that the concept of quantum interference offers as a tool for testing fundamental physics are explored here. The use of neutron interference as an instrument to confront against measurement readouts some of the principles behind metric theories of gravity will be analyzed, as well as some discrepancies between theory and experiment. The main restrictions that this model embodies for the study of some of the features of the structure of space--time will be explicitly pointed out. For instance, the conditions imposed by the necessary use of the semiclassical approximation. Additionally, the role that photon interference could play as an element in this context is also considered. In this realm we explore the differences between first-order and second-order coherence experiments, and underline the fact that the Hanbury--Brown--Twiss effect could open up some interesting experimental possibilities in the analysis of the structure of space--time. The void, in connection with the description of wave phenomena, implicit in the principles of metric theories is analyzed. The conceptual difficulties, that this void entails, are commented.

Critical points in a relativistic bosonic gas induced by the quantum structure of spacetime

It is well known that phase transitions arise if the interaction among particles embodies an attractive as well as a repulsive contribution. In this work it will be shown that the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry, characterized through a deformation in the relation dispersion, plus the bosonic statistics predict the emergence of critical points. In other words, in some quantum gravity models the structure of spacetime implies the emergence of critical points even when no interaction among the particle has been considered.

Temperature measurements of a Bose--Einstein condensate by ultra--intense light pulses

Experimentally the temperature in a Bose--Einstein condensate is always deduced resorting to the comparison between the Maxwell--Boltzmann velocity distribution function and the density profile in momentum space. Though a successful method it is an approximation, since it also implies the use of classical statistical mechanics at temperatures close to the condensation temperature where quantal effects play a relevant role. The present work puts forward a new method in which we use an ultra--intense light pulse and a nonlinear optical material as detectors for differences in times--of--flight. This experimental value shall be compared against the result here calculated, using the Bose--Einstein distribution function, which is a temperature--dependent variable, and in this way the temperature of the condensate is obtained.

Midisuperspace Supersymmetric Quantum Cosmology

We investigate the canonical quantization in the framework of N=1 simple supergravity for the case of a very simple gravitational midisuperspace described by Gowdy $T^3$ cosmological models. We consider supersymmetric quantum cosmology in the mentioned midisuperspace, where a matrix representation for the gravitino covector--spinor is used. The full Lorentz constraint and its implications for the wave function of the universe are analyzed in detail. We found that there are indeed physical states in the midisuperspace sector of the theory in contrast to the case of minisuperspace where there exist no physical states.

WKB formalism and a lower limit for the energy eigenstates of bound states for some potentials

In the present work the conditions appearing in the WKB approximation formalism of quantum mechanics are analyzed. It is shown that, in general, a careful definition of an approximation method requires the introduction of two length parameters, one of them always considered in the text books on quantum mechanics, whereas the second one is usually neglected. Afterwards we define a particular family of potentials and prove, resorting to the aforementioned length parameters, that we may find an energy which is a lower bound to the ground energy of the system. The idea is applied to the case of a harmonic oscillator and also to a particle freely falling in a homogeneous gravitational field, and in both cases the consistency of our method is corroborated. This approach, together with the Rayleigh--Ritz formalism, allows us to define an energy interval in which the ground energy of any potential, belonging to our family, must lie.

White dwarfs as test objects of Lorentz violations

In the present work the thermodynamical properties of bosonic and fermionic gases are analyzed under the condition that a modified dispersion relation is present. This last condition implies a breakdown of Lorentz symmetry. The implications upon the condensation temperature will be studied, as well, as upon other thermodynamical variables such as specific heat, entropy, etc. Moreover, it will be argued that those cases entailing a violation of time reversal symmetry of the motion equations could lead to problems with the concept of entropy. Concerning the fermionic case it will be shown that Fermi temperature suffers a modification due to the breakdown of Lorentz symmetry. The results will be applied to white dwarfs and the consequences upon the Chandrasekhar mass--radius relation will be shown. The possibility of resorting to white dwarfs for the testing of modified dispersion relations is also addressed. It will be shown that the comparison of the current observations against the predictions of our model allows us to discard some values of one of the parameters appearing in the modifications of the dispersion relation.

Continuous distribution of frequencies and deformed dispersion relations

The possibilities that, in the realm of the detection of the so--called deformed dispersion relation, a light source with a continuous distribution of frequencies offers is discussed. It will be proved that the presence of finite coherence length entails the emergence of a new term in the interference pattern. This is a novel trait, which renders a new possibility in the quest for bounds associated with these deformed dispersion relations.

Quantum Measurements and the kappa--Poincare Group

The possible description of the vacuum of quantum gravity through the so called kappa--Poincare group is analyzed considering some of the consequences of this symmetry in the path integral formulation of nonrelativistic quantum theory. This study is carried out with two cases, firstly, a free particle, and finally, the situation of a particle immersed in a homogeneous gravitational field. It will be shown that the kappa--Poincare group implies the loss of some of the basic properties associated to Feynman's path integral. For instance, loss of the group characteristic related to the time dependence of the evolution operator, or the breakdown of the composition law for amplitudes of events occurring successively in time. Additionally some similarities between the present idea and the so called restricted path integral formalism will be underlined. These analogies advocate the claim that if the kappa--Poincare group contains some of the physical information of the quantum gravity vacuum, then this vacuum could entail decoherence. This last result will also allow us to consider the possibility of analyzing the continuous measurement problem of quantum theory from a group--theoretical point of view, but now taking into account the kappa--Poincare symmetries.

Deformed dispersion relations and the Hanbury--Brown--Twiss Effect

In the present work we analyze the possibility of detecting some deformed dispersion relations, emerging in some quantum--gravity models, resorting to the so--called Hanbury--Brown--Twiss effect. It will be proved that in some scenarios the possibilities are not pessimistic. Forsooth, for some values of the corresponding parameters the aforementioned effect could render interesting outcomes.
