Higher-order asymptotics for the energy of greedy sequences on the unit circle

For the Riesz and logarithmic energies, we consider a greedy sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ of points on the unit circle $S^1$ constructed in such a way that for every integer $N\geq 2$, the energy of the configuration $(a_0,\ldots,a_{N-2},x)$ attains its optimal value (say $E_N$) at $x=a_{N-1}$. We derive an asymptotic expansion for $E_N$ in terms of certain bounded, oscillatory sequences $H_{N}$, $K_{N}$, and $R_{N}$ with a doubling periodicity property. In particular, we recover the results of \cite{LopMc1,LopWag} showing that after a proper translation and scaling of $E_N$, one is left with a sequence $T_N$ that is bounded and divergent. We show that the limit points of the sequence $T_N$ fill a closed interval. This follows from our asymptotic formulae and an analogous density result for the limit points of the sequences $H_{N}$, $K_{N}$, and $R_{N}$. We also give a new, simpler proof of density results obtained in \cite{LopMin} for the optimal values of the potential generated by a greedy sequence.

Asymptotics of the optimal values of potentials generated by greedy energy sequences on the unit circle

For the Riesz and logarithmic potentials, we consider greedy energy sequences $(a_n)_{n=0}^\infty$ on the unit circle $S^1$, constructed in such a way that for every $n\geq 1$, the discrete potential generated by the first $n$ points $a_0,\ldots,a_{n-1}$ of the sequence attains its minimum value (say $U_n$) at $a_n$. We obtain asymptotic formulae that describe the behavior of $U_n$ as $n\to\infty$, in terms of certain bounded arithmetic functions with a doubling periodicity property. As previously shown in \cite{LopMc2}, after properly translating and scaling $U_n$, one obtains a new sequence $(F_n)$ that is bounded and divergent. We find the exact value of $\liminf F_n$ (the value of $\limsup F_n$ was already given in \cite{LopMc2}), and show that the interval $[\liminf F_n,\limsup F_n]$ comprises all the limit points of the sequence $(F_n)$.

Non-standard Green energy problems in the complex plane

We consider several non-standard discrete and continuous Green energy problems in the complex plane and study the asymptotic relations between their solutions. In the discrete setting, we consider two problems; one with variable particle positions (within a given compact set) and variable particle masses, the other one with variable masses but prescribed positions. The mass of a particle is allowed to take any value in the range $0\leq m\leq R$, where $R>0$ is a fixed parameter in the problem. The corresponding continuous energy problems are defined on the space of positive measures $μ$ with mass $\|μ\|\leq R$ and supported on the given compact set, with an additional upper constraint that appears as a consequence of the prescribed positions condition. It is proved that the equilibrium constant and equilibrium measure vary continuously as functions of the parameter $R$ (the latter in the weak-star topology). In the unconstrained energy problem we present a greedy algorithm that converges to the equilibrium constant and equilibrium measure. In the discrete energy problems, it is shown that under certain conditions, the optimal values of the particle masses are uniquely determined by the optimal positions or prescribed positions of the particles, depending on the type of problem considered.

Lattice paths, vector continued fractions, and resolvents of banded Hessenberg operators

We give a combinatorial interpretation of vector continued fractions obtained by applying the Jacobi-Perron algorithm to a vector of $p\geq 1$ resolvent functions of a banded Hessenberg operator of order $p+1$. The interpretation consists in the identification of the coefficients in the power series expansion of the resolvent functions as weight polynomials associated with Lukasiewicz lattice paths in the upper half-plane. In the scalar case $p=1$ this reduces to the relation established by P. Flajolet and G. Viennot between Jacobi-Stieltjes continued fractions, their power series expansion, and Motzkin paths. We consider three classes of lattice paths, namely the Lukasiewicz paths in the upper half-plane, their symmetric images in the lower half-plane, and a third class of unrestricted lattice paths which are allowed to cross the $x$-axis. We establish a relation between the three families of paths by means of a relation between the associated generating power series. We also discuss the subcollection of Lukasiewicz paths formed by the partial $p$-Dyck paths, whose weight polynomials are known in the literature as genetic sums or generalized Stieltjes-Rogers polynomials, and express certain moments of bi-diagonal Hessenberg operators.

Asymptotics of the minimum values of Riesz and logarithmic potentials generated by greedy energy sequences on the unit circle

In this work we investigate greedy energy sequences on the unit circle for the logarithmic and Riesz potentials. By definition, if $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$ is a greedy $s$-energy sequence on the unit circle, the Riesz potential $U_{N,s}(x):=\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}|a_k-x|^{-s}$, $s>0$, generated by the first $N$ points of the sequence attains its minimum value at the point $a_{N}$, for every $N\geq 1$. In the case $s=0$ we minimize instead the logarithmic potential $U_{N,0}(x):=-\sum_{k=0}^{N-1}\log |a_{k}-x|$. We analyze the asymptotic properties of these extremal values $U_{N,s}(a_N)$, studying separately the cases $s=0$, $0 1$. We obtain second-order asymptotic formulas for $U_{N,s}(a_N)$ in the cases $s=0$, $0 1$ is proved, and it is shown that the normalized sequence $U_{N,s}(a_N)/N^s$ is bounded and divergent in this case. We also consider, briefly, greedy energy sequences in which the minimization condition is required starting from the point $a_{p+1}$ (instead of the point $a_{1}$ as previously stated), for some $p\geq 1$. For this more general class of greedy sequences, we prove a first-order asymptotic result for $0\leq s<1$.

Characteristic polynomials of random banded Hessenberg matrices and Hermite-Padé approximation

We consider a class of random banded Hessenberg matrices with independent entries having identical distributions along diagonals. The distributions may be different for entries belonging to different diagonals. For a sequence of $n\times n$ matrices in the class considered, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of their empirical spectral distribution as $n$ tends to infinity.

Asymptotics of greedy energy sequences on the unit circle and the sphere

For a parameter $λ>0$, we investigate greedy $λ$-energy sequences $(a_{n})_{n=0}^{\infty}$ on the unit sphere $S^{d}\subset\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, $d\geq 1$, satisfying the defining property that each $a_{n}$, $n\geq 1$, is a point where the potential $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}|x-a_{k}|^λ$ attains its maximum value on $S^{d}$. We show that these sequences satisfy the symmetry property $a_{2k+1}=-a_{2k}$ for every $k\geq 0$. The asymptotic distribution of the sequence undergoes a sharp transition at the value $λ=2$, from uniform distribution ($λ<2$) to concentration on two antipodal points ($λ>2$). We investigate first-order and second-order asymptotics of the $λ$-energy of the first $N$ points of the sequence, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the extremal values $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}|a_{n}-a_{k}|^λ$. The second-order asymptotics is analyzed on the unit circle. It is shown that this asymptotic behavior differs significantly from that of $N$ equally spaced points on the unit circle, and a transition in the behavior takes place at $λ=1$.

Nikishin systems on star-like sets: Ratio asymptotics of the associated multiple orthogonal polynomials, II

In this paper we continue the investigations initiated in \cite{LopLopstar} on ratio asymptotics of multiple orthogonal polynomials and functions of the second kind associated with Nikishin systems on star-like sets. We describe in detail the limiting functions found in \cite{LopLopstar}, expressing them in terms of certain conformal mappings defined on a compact Riemann surface of genus zero. We also express the limiting values of the recurrence coefficients, which are shown to be strictly positive, in terms of certain values of the conformal mappings. As a consequence, the limits depend exclusively on the location of the intervals determined by the supports of the measures that generate the Nikishin system.

Nikishin systems on star-like sets: Ratio asymptotics of the associated multiple orthogonal polynomials

We investigate the ratio asymptotic behavior of the sequence $(Q_{n})_{n=0}^{\infty}$ of multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a Nikishin system of $p\geq 1$ measures that are compactly supported on the star-like set of $p+1$ rays $S_{+}=\{z\in\mathbb{C}: z^{p+1}\geq 0\}$. The main algebraic property of these polynomials is that they satisfy a three-term recurrence relation of the form $zQ_{n}(z)=Q_{n+1}(z)+a_{n} Q_{n-p}(z)$ with $a_{n}>0$ for all $n\geq p$. Under a Rakhmanov-type condition on the measures generating the Nikishin system, we prove that the sequence of ratios $Q_{n+1}(z)/Q_{n}(z)$ and the sequence $a_{n}$ of recurrence coefficients are limit periodic with period $p(p+1)$. Our results complement some results obtained by the first author and Miña-Díaz in a recent paper in which algebraic properties and weak asymptotics of these polynomials were investigated. Our results also extend some results obtained by the first author in the case $p=2$.

Nikishin systems on star-like sets: algebraic properties and weak asymptotics of the associated multiple orthogonal polynomials

Polynomials $Q_n(z)$, $n=0,1,\ldots,$ that are multi-orthogonal with respect to a Nikishin system of $p\geq 1$ compactly supported measures over the star-like set of $p+1$ rays $S_+:=\{z\in \mathbb{C}: z^{p+1}\geq 0 \}$ are investigated. We prove that the Nikishin system is normal, that the polynomials satisfy a three-term recurrence relation of order $p+1$ of the form $z Q_{n}(z)=Q_{n+1}(z)+a_{n}\,Q_{n-p}(z)$ with $a_n>0$ for all $n\geq p$, and that the nonzero roots of $Q_n$ are all simple and located in $S_+$. Under the assumption of regularity (in the sense of Stahl and Totik) of the measures generating the Nikishin system, we describe the asymptotic zero distribution and weak behavior of the polynomials $Q_n$ in terms of a vector equilibrium problem for logarithmic potentials. Under the same regularity assumptions, a theorem on the convergence of the Hermite-Padé approximants to the Nikishin system of Cauchy transforms is proven.

Asymptotics of the energy of sections of greedy energy sequences on the unit circle, and some conjectures for general sequences

In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the Riesz $s$-energy of the first $N$ points of a greedy $s$-energy sequence on the unit circle, for all values of $s$ in the range $0\leq s<\infty$ (identifying as usual the case $s=0$ with the logarithmic energy). In the context of the unit circle, greedy $s$-energy sequences coincide with the classical Leja sequences constructed using the logarithmic potential. We obtain first-order and second-order asymptotic results. The key idea is to express the Riesz $s$-energy of the first $N$ points of a greedy $s$-energy sequence in terms of the binary representation of $N$. Motivated by our results, we pose some conjectures for general sequences on the unit circle.

The normal matrix model with a monomial potential, a vector equilibrium problem, and multiple orthogonal polynomials on a star

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of a family of multiple orthogonal polynomials that is naturally linked with the normal matrix model with a monomial potential of arbitrary degree $d+1$. The polynomials that we investigate are multiple orthogonal with respect to a system of $d$ analytic weights defined on a symmetric $(d+1)$-star centered at the origin. In the first part we analyze in detail a vector equilibrium problem involving a system of $d$ interacting measures $(μ_{1},\ldots,μ_{d})$ supported on star-like sets in the plane. We show that in the subcritical regime, the first component $μ_{1}^{*}$ of the solution to this problem is the asymptotic zero distribution of the multiple orthogonal polynomials. It also characterizes the domain where the eigenvalues in the normal matrix model accumulate, in the sense that the Schwarz function associated with the boundary of this domain can be expressed explicitly in terms of $μ_{1}^{*}$. The second part of the paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the multiple orthogonal polynomials. The asymptotic results are obtained again in the subcritical regime, and they follow from the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis of a Riemann-Hilbert problem of size $(d+1)\times (d+1)$. The vector equilibrium problem and the Riemann-Hilbert problem that we investigate are generalizations of those studied recently by Bleher-Kuijlaars in the case $d=2$.
